In this village, there is no coconut tree, no sweet potato tree, no banana tree, no papaya tree.
What do people want to eat?
We live depending on the weather, the rain, the lack of water.
So it is very difficult to plant a plant that can support the family.
People can die here.
Flores.
Not only is it known for its beautiful natural panorama and vibrant culture,
Flores is also known for its land dominated by rock cliffs and extreme climate.
Especially in East Flores,
where the weather is uncertain and tends to have long drought seasons.
This condition, of course, makes it difficult for agriculture, especially in East Flores.
Long droughts cause a number of agricultural commodities, such as rice and corn,
to experience a reduction in production.
In Likotuden Village, there are a lot of sleeping lands.
The land is rocky.
So the people of Likotuden think that the plants that are planted are unsuccessful.
My name is Agata Horekola.
I am from Likotuden, Kawalelo Village, Demompagong District.
As far as farmers are concerned, we only plant rice, corn and peanuts.
But every year we have to experience a lack of harvest.
The effects of long droughts, climate change, and other social impacts
make the people of East Flores and Likotuden Village
choose to leave their paddy fields and settle down to seek a more promising life.
Imagine, people have a hard time eating.
In this village, there are no coconut trees, no sweet potatoes, no bananas, no papayas.
What do people want to eat?
People can die. In a short period of time, people can die
if they continue to be left like this.
We live depending on the rainfall.
The water is also insufficient.
So it is very difficult to plant a plant that can support the family.
However, fate is different.
Maria Loreta returns the local food's potential in East Nusa Tenggara by planting sorghum.
Sorghum is a plant that has long been known by the people of East Nusa Tenggara.
Sorghum is known by various local names,
such as Penamina, Jagung Solor, Mesa, Wata Blolong, Jagung Rote, and Wataru Hamu.
This sorghum character has the ability to withstand dry climate and can grow on rocky soil.
When other farmers fail to plant, sorghum is the one to harvest.
When we planted sorghum for the first time,
I fell in love with it.
Behind the rock is a very exotic plant, sorghum.
When the sorghum seeds arrived in Likotuden,
and we planted the sorghum,
although the rainfall was less, the sorghum yield was quite good.
Sorghum is rich in nutrients such as protein, fiber, vitamin B, especially niacin,
and minerals such as magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and potassium.
In 100 grams of sorghum, there are about 11 grams of protein, 6.3 grams of fiber, and various important minerals.
Sorghum is also known as a good fiber source, which is important for the health of the plant.
Some studies show that sorghum can help prevent mold and maintain the health of the sperm.
