Welcome to week three of the 2025 Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along! You will love making the Southport Market Bag.
The Southport Market Bag crochet pattern is a fairly easy one to work. The bag consists of rounds of half double crochet two together stitches and rounds of paired double crochet stitches.
Like the other market bags in this year's crochet along, this bag has an oval shaped bottom and is worked from the bottom up. The half double crochet two together stitches create fun ridges of texture around the bag and it's a fairly quick one to work.
This crochet pattern is available in English only and written in American crochet terms.

Hello everyone. I'm Sarah of Rich
Textures Crochet and welcome welcome to
week three of the
2025 marvelous market bag crochet along.
Today we are going to learn how to
crochet the Southport Market bag. This
is a beautiful market bag. You can see
there's a little bit of stitch uh
texture here in the stitches in the
front. Uh and then it includes these V
stitches which give it bit of a lace
design uh but also makes it quite simple
and a little bit quicker to work up.
These bags are worked from the bottom up
through to the top. This is the largest
of the set of four bags. It measures
approximately 13 by uh in across by 15
and 1/2 in from top to bottom when it's
laid flat.
Today for the tutorial, you're going to
need some cotton yarn. I'm using a
medium or a worsted weight cotton. This
is the 247 cotton by Lion Brand. There's
about 186 yards per ball. You're going
to need about 2 and 1/2 balls of yarn to
complete the project. You're also going
to need a 4 mm or G hook. There are
links to these items in the description
of this video. Uh you may also find it
helpful to have some stitch markers on
hand. It may save you a little bit of
counting later on, but they are purely
optional. Also, down in the description
along with the material info, you will
find a direct link to the free written
instructions which are on rich textures
crochet.com. There's also some info
there about the crochet along in
general. So, thank you so much for
joining me. While you're here, I invite
you to subscribe. Take a look around.
This channel is updated every single
week with free crochet patterns. If you
missed the first two market bags, they
are also here on my channel under the
marvelous market bag crochet along
playlist. And of course, next week, if
it's not out already, we will have our
final market bag for this year posted as
well. So, let's grab our hooks and yarn
and get
started. Now, our bags are worked from
the bottom up. I'm going to be working
with this terracotta color. The bag that
you saw me show there earlier was worked
in the ecru color. So to begin, we're
going to start by making a slip knot
down at the bottom of our bag. And
you're then going to make a foundation
chain. Your foundation chain today is
going to be 41. if you uh 41 chains. If
you wish to change the size of your bag,
you'll simply want to work an odd number
of stitches.
There's
30, 40, and 41.
You're then going to begin round one of
your bag bottom by working a half double
crochet into the second chain from your
hook. And then half double crochet in
each stitch all the way across until one
stitch
remains. When you come across and you
have one stitch remaining, you're going
to work three half double crochet
stitches all into that final stitch.
It's going to bring you
around so that you're then able to work
on the opposite side of your foundation
chain. You're then going to work one
half double crochet into each stitch all
the way along the opposite side of your
foundation chain. once again until one
stitch
remains. So, I'm inserting my hook into
the same chain as the
uh half double crochet that is worked
across from it. And I'm just working
through the opposite the loops on the
opposite
side all the way across until one stitch
remains.
When you come around at the end of round
one and have one stitch remaining,
you're going to work two half double
crochet
stitches into that final stitch. Then
join with a slip stitch into the top of
your first half double crochet. That
brings you to the end of round one, and
you're going to have a total of 82 half
double crochet stitches.
For round two, you're going to chain one
and work three half double crochet
stitches into the first stitch into the
same stitch as joining. Now, here's
where your stitch markers may come in
handy. Each time we come around for uh
the rounds after this one, whenever we
come to the second half double crochet
in this set of three, we're going to
work three more half double crochet. So,
if you would like, you can take a stitch
marker, place it into that second half
double crochet stitch that you worked,
and uh then each time you come around,
it just means you have a little less
counting, and you can just work from
marker to marker. I'll show you what I
mean. Uh, as I come to that point,
you're then going to work a half double
crochet, just one of them, into each of
the next 38 stitches.
Once you have worked 38 half double
crochet into your next stitch, you're
going to work three half double crochet
stitches. And you can place a stitch
marker on the second
stitch. You're then going to work one uh
half double crochet into the next
stitch.
and three half double crochets into the
next. You can mark that second half
double crochet
stitch. You're then going to work a half
double crochet into each of the next 38
stitches. And you'll have two stitches
remaining.
Once you've worked 38 half double
crochet into your next stitch, you're
going to work three half double crochet
stitches. and you can mark that second
stitch. You're then going to work one
half double crochet into the final
stitch and join with a slip stitch into
the top of the
first. At the end of round two, you're
going to have a total of 90 half double
crochet stitches.
For round three, chain one, half double
crochet into the first stitch, which is
the same stitch as
joining. You're then going to briefly
move that stitch marker and into the
next stitch, work three half double
crochets. Replace your stitch marker
into the second half double crochet of
that set of three. You're then going to
work one half double crochet in each of
the next 40 stitches or all the way
across to your next stitch
marker. Into your next stitch, you're
going to work three half double crochet
stitches.
Replace your stitch marker into the
second of the three half double
crochets. You're then going to work one
half double crochet into each of the
next three stitches or until you come to
your next stitch
marker. You're then going to work three
half double crochets into that next
stitch.
Mark the second half double crochet if
desired. You're then going to work one
half double crochet into each of the
next 40 stitches or just work one half
double crochet in each stitch all the
way across until you come to your next
marker.
Work three half double crochets into
your next
stitch. You're then going to work one
half double crochet in each of the final
two stitches.
You can then join with a slip stitch
into the top of your first stitch. At
the end of this round, you have a total
of 98
stitches. Chain one. Do not turn your
work. Continue working in the same
direction. And you're going to for round
four, work a half double crochet into
each of the first two stitches.
You're then going to work three half
double crochets into your next
stitch. And then work one half double
crochet into each of the next 42
stitches or until you come to your next
stitch marker.
into your next stitch. Work three half
double
crochets. Then work one half double
crochet into each of the next five
stitches.
Work three half double crochets into
your next
stitch. And then work one half double
crochet into each of the next 42
stitches or until you come to your next
stitch
marker. Work three half double crochets
into your next stitch.
and finish off row four by working a
half double crochet, one of them, into
each of the final three
stitches. You're then going to join with
a slip stitch into the top of your first
stitch. Chain one. Do not turn your
work. Now for round five, we're going to
work a half double crochet into each of
the first three
stitches. You're then going to work
three half double crochets into your
next stitch. And at this time, you can
set aside those stitch markers. You
won't need them
again. Next, you're going to half double
crochet into each of the next 44
stitches.
or until you come to your next stitch
marker. Work three half double crochets
into your next stitch.
Then work one half double crochet into
each of the next seven
stitches. Remove your stitch marker and
work three half double crochets into the
next stitch.
and one half double crochet into each of
the next 44 stitches or until you come
to that final stitch marker. There.
You're then going to work three half
double crochets into that next
stitch and finish off round five with
one half double crochet in each of the
final four
stitches. At the end of round five, join
with a slip stitch into the top of your
first stitch. Chain one. You're going to
have a total of
114 stitches.
Then for rounds six, 7, and eight,
you're simply going to work three rounds
of one half double crochet in each
stitch all the way around. When you come
to that first stitch, join with a slip
stitch into the top, chain one, and
repeat. So go ahead, work rounds six, 7,
and 8. one half double crochet into each
stitch all the way around. Always
working in the same direction. And then
you can meet me back here at the end of
round
eight. At the end of round eight, this
is what your work is going to look like
from the
beginning. And you're then ready to
begin working the bag sides.
For our bag sides, you're going to begin
round one by chaining one. And then
simply work a single crochet into that
same stitch as joining and single
crochet into each stitch all the way
around. At the end of round one of your
bag side, you're going to join with a
slip stitch into the top of your first
stitch.
chain
one and turn your
work. We're now going to work some of
the texture
uh that you saw that was on the front of
your bag. The texture is created by
working a combination of slip stitches
and half double crochet stitches. What
we're going to do is we're going to
begin by working a slip stitch into the
first stitch, which in this case is our
same stitch as joining. Work one slip
stitch. Now, if you would like, you may
wish to mark this first stitch just to
make it easier to see when you come
around.
You're then going to work a half double
crochet two stitches together beginning
in the same stitch as your slip stitch
and finishing in the next stitch. To
work your half double crochet two
together, yarn over, insert your hook
into the same stitch as your slip
stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Yarn over once again. Insert your hook
into the next stitch. Yarn over and draw
up a loop. You will have five loops on
your hook. Yarn over and pull through
all five loops. That's your half double
crochet two together. You're then going
to repeat that all the way around.
Slip stitch into your next stitch and
work a half double crochet two together
beginning in the same stitch as your
slip stitch and finishing off in the
next
stitch. Repeat this all the way around.
Slip
stitch and half double crochet two
together beginning in the same stitch.
slip
stitch and half double crochet two
together. All the way around, you're
going to finish off this round with a
half double crochet two
together. So, I'm here working my final
slip stitch and my final half double
crochet two together. You're then going
to join with a slip stitch into the
first stitch, which was your slip
stitch. So, join with a slip stitch into
that stitch. Chain three, which counts
as a double crochet, and turn your work.
Now for round
three, we're going to begin by working a
double crochet back into the same stitch
as joining back into our slip
stitch. You're then going to skip the
next half double crochet two together
and work two double crochets into the
next slip stitch.
skip the half double crochet two
together and work two double crochets
into the next slip stitch. You're going
to repeat this all the way
around, working two half double crochets
into each slip stitch. When you come
back to your first stitch, join with a
slip stitch into the top of that
starting chain three.
When you come all the way around at the
end of round three, join with a slip
stitch into the top of that starting
chain
three. Chain one and turn your work.
Now once again for
uh rounds 4 through to
29, you are going to repeat rounds two
and three 13 more times. So beginning uh
for the repeat of round two, you're
going to slip stitch into the top of
that first stitch and then work your
half double crochet two together. This
time when I'm working my slip stitch, I
am working just into the top of that
first double
crochet. You can also mark that stitch
again if you'd like, if you found it
easier to see when you came
around. And then work your half double
crochet two
together. Repeat that all the way
around. When you come back to your first
stitch, you're finishing off with a
double crochet. Half double crochet two
together. and you're going to join with
a slip stitch into the top of your first
stitch. Chain three and turn your work
and then work your round of double
crochet stitches. So, repeat rounds two
and three for 13 more times. That will
bring you through to the end of round
29. And you're going to meet me back
here. At the end of round 29, you've
joined with a slip stitch into the top
of your first stitch. This is what your
work is going to look like from the
beginning. Now for round 30, you're
going to chain one and turn your work.
We're now going to work some of our half
double crochet two together and slip
stitch clusters. So, you're going to
begin by working a slip stitch into that
first stitch followed by the half double
crochet beginning half double crochet
two together being beginning in the same
stitch as your slip stitch and finishing
off into the next stitch.
slip stitch into your next stitch and
half double crochet two together
beginning in the same stitch as your
previous slip stitch. You're going to
repeat this all the way around. When you
come back to that first stitch, you're
going to join with a slip stitch into
the top of your first stitch.
At the end of round 30, you're going to
join with a slip stitch into the top of
the first stitch, which is your slip
stitch. You're then going to chain one
and turn your work.
You're now ready to begin the bag top
and
handles. So, for our bag top,
uh, working with the front side facing
with the textured side facing you,
you're going to work three rounds of
single crochet stitches. So, single
crochet into that first stitch, the same
stitch as joining, which was that slip
stitch. You're then going to single
crochet into each stitch all the way
around. When you come to that first
stitch, that first single crochet,
you're going to join with a slip stitch
into the top of the first single
crochet. Chain one. Continue working in
the same direction and
repeat for rounds one, two, and three of
your bag top. You're simply going to
work the one single crochet in each
stitch all the way
around. And then you're going to meet me
back here at the end of round
three. At the end of round three of your
bag top, you're going to join with a
slip stitch into the top of your first
stitch.
You're then going to slip stitch into
each of the next five
stitches. So,
one
2
3 4 and
five. We're now going to lay the
foundation for our bag
handles. Chain one.
work one single crochet into the first
stitch, which is the same stitch as that
last slip stitch, and one single crochet
into each of the next 26 stitches. So
you'll have a total of 27 single crochet
al together.
That's 20.
And that's my 27th stitch. Once you have
a total of 27 single crochet
stitches, you're going to form your
first handle by chaining 35 chains.
You'll want to keep these chains fairly
loose so that you can work into them
later on. So chain 35 chains.
and 35. Now, being careful not to twist
that chain back on your bag, you're
going to count and skip a total of 30
stitches.
Once you've skipped 30 stitches, you're
going to work a single crochet, one
single crochet into each of the next 27
stitches.
Once you've worked another 27 single
crochet stitches, you're going to once
again chain 35 chains.
Skip the next 30 stitches on your bag.
And that should bring you back to your
first single crochet stitch. and you're
going to join with a slip stitch into
the top of that single
crochet. Chain one. And for round five,
we're going to single crochet into that
same stitches joining. You're then going
to single crochet into each stitch,
including each chain stitch all the way
around. So, I'm just going to work my
single crochet stitches all the way
around to my first bag handle.
You're just working one single crochet
into each single crochet until I you
come to that chain loop.
When you come to this chain stitches on
your bag handles, you're simply working
single
crochets into each one. Once again, make
sure that that chain is not twisted. If
you are having difficulty working single
crochets into the chain stitches
themselves, you are welcome to work them
into the chain loops. So just into the
big space. I just find that when I work
them into the stitches, it helps to keep
them evenly spread out just a little bit
more. But it's really up to you. So work
one single crochet in each stitch and
each chain stitch all the way around
until you come to your first stitch.
Then join with a slip stitch into the
top of your first
stitch. At the end of round five, you're
going to join with a slip stitch into
the top of your first stitch and chain
one. Continue working in the same
direction. Now for rounds 6 through to
12. So for the next seven rounds, you're
simply going to work rounds of single
crochet. So single crochet into the same
stitches joining and then single crochet
into each stitch all the way around. At
the end of your round five, you had a
total of 124 stitches. So for rounds 6
through to 12, you're going to continue
to have uh that same number. if you wish
for uh these final seven rounds. Uh if
you don't like the look of the seam, but
you can kind of see here forming, then
you're welcome to work continuous
rounds. Just use a stitch marker to mark
that first stitch and work single
crochet rounds without joining at the
end of each round. It's really up to
you. But you're going to go ahead and
work round six through to the end of
round 12. One single crochet into each
stitch all the way around. Join with a
slip stitch into the top of the first
stitch. Chain one. Repeat. You're going
to work through to the end of round 12.
And then meet me back
here. At the end of round 12, you're
going to join with a slip stitch into
the top of your first
stitch. You can then go ahead and fasten
off. You're then going to take your yarn
needle and simply weave in your ends.
Once you've woven in your ends, that is
it. That is all there is to working the
Southport Market bag. you can then go
ahead and enjoy. So, thank you so much
for joining me on this third week of the
marvelous market crochet along for 2025.
