At the 2022 Joe May Invitational at Louisiana State University, Abby Steiner from the University
of Kentucky won the women's 100 meters with a world-leading time of 10.92 seconds, taking
down a very strong field, which included this year's world indoor silver medalist in the
60-meter dash, Micaiah Briscoe.
This race was but another example of Steiner's incredible top-end speed, as she closed the
With a legal wind speed of 0.5 meters per second, this was Steiner's very first legal
100 meters under the 11-second barrier, and even though this performance was a breakthrough
moment for Steiner, she returned to the track exactly one hour later, and she did something
even more incredible.
In the women's 200-meter dash, Steiner was set to run against a very strong headwind,
which at the time measured negative 5.6 meters per second.
This is a massive obstacle when it comes to running fast, as a headwind like this makes
it nearly impossible to run a world-class time.
Well, that is unless you're Abby Steiner, who still managed to run a time of 22.38 seconds
despite the significant headwind.
This time currently places her as the third-fastest athlete in the world this season, and it's
also currently the NCAA lead over the 200, but what really makes this performance so
amazing is that her wind-adjusted time comes out to 21.66 seconds, which would not only
be a new collegiate record by a very significant margin, but it would place her as the seventh-fastest
female 200-meter athlete of all time.
Now, if we go back to this year's indoor season on February 26th, we can see Steiner
running a time of 22.09 seconds, a time that now ranks her as the second-fastest 200-meter
athlete of all time.
This achievement was unreal, but when you look at the World Athletic Scoring System
and compare this indoor moment to her new outdoor 200-meter race, her outdoor time is
actually scored slightly higher, making this 200-meter dash one of the fastest we have
ever seen.
Over the course of just one hour, Steiner ran the world's fastest 100, followed by
one of the most impressive 200-meter dashes in collegiate history.
But believe it or not, this is not all that she did in this competition, as she also ran
in the women's 4x100-meter relay, where her Kentucky team broke the meeting record
with a time of 42.46 seconds, a time that now ranks as the second-fastest time in the
world this season.
Now it's unknown exactly how fast Steiner ran this second-leg split, but I would imagine
that it was close to the 10-second barrier, which is achievable in the women's 4x100-meters,
given that they have a significant running start through these exchanges.
For 2022, Steiner is currently undefeated over the Indoor 200, the Outdoor 200, and
also now the Outdoor 100-meters, making her one of the most high-profile sprinters on
the planet, so the question now is how long can she remain undefeated, and will she break
more records throughout this 2022 season?
Thanks for watching everyone, and as always, until next time.
