Dear friends,

This is one of the most personal performances I’ve ever shared with you. Farewell, by the extraordinary Brazilian guitarist and composer Sergio Assad, is a piece born from profound grief and love. He composed it in 1994, during the heartbreaking illness and loss of his beloved wife. Originally written for two guitars, Farewell was later arranged for solo guitar—becoming a voice of vulnerability, memory, and emotional release.

I discovered this piece during my own season of grief—after losing my grandmother, my hero, my anchor. I recorded this video in early January, just weeks after her passing, on a grey, quiet afternoon in Malibu, California. The muted sky, the stillness—it all echoed the silence I felt inside.

In this music, I found a space to say goodbye. A goodbye I couldn’t offer in person. Recording Farewell became not just an artistic expression, but a rite of healing.
