Un preparador de impuestos recibe una llamada de un nuevo cliente. Se abordan preguntas sobre cómo reclamar una sobrina y su hermana.
Good morning, thank you for contacting SS
TAX services. I'm Raul, how can I
help you today? Hello, Raul. My name is
Jorge Rodríguez. I'd like to
schedule an appointment with you to do
my taxes, but I have a couple
of questions first.
Clear. I can answer
general questions for you, can't I? Well,
thank you very much. Well, look, my sister
Terry and her daughter Lucy have been living
with my wife and me for over a
year. Lucy is 10 years old. Now, when
we file our
taxes, we'll be able to claim all the
credits and deductions I've
heard my friends talk about.
My sister has medical problems and
has not been able to work full time.
Mr. Rodriguez, to claim your
niece as a qualifying child, there are two
types of tax credits
available when filing if you meet
the eligibility requirements.
Let me explain. A nonrefundable credit
can help eliminate
any tax liability you may
have. If there is any surplus, that
portion cannot be refunded. Then there
is the refundable credit. This
credit can do the same things as the
nonrefundable credit, but if there is a
surplus or you don't have a
tax liability, those amounts can be
repaid by increasing
your refund amount. Mm, I didn't know about
both tax credits. Uh, how do I
qualify for any of them? It's
easier to discuss
eligibility requirements in person, so let's
schedule an appointment for you and your
wife to come to my office to
discuss the credits and see which ones you
qualify for. We can also review your W2
and any other relevant information. I will
also email you
a questionnaire that I use with
all my clients to complete before
our appointment. Remember to bring your
photo ID and
Social Security card for yourself and
anyone you may claim on
your return.
Okay. Yes, I can do that without any problem.
Brilliant. First, I need to ask you a few
additional questions about your sister and
niece to gain a better
understanding of any
tax benefits you may be
eligible for.
Okay. Uh, well my wife and I have
received our W2s, uh, and the 1099s for
a savings account that we have with
the bank. Uh, we rent, so we
don't have a mortgage. Uh, so
what else will you need for my
niece? Uh, I'll check with my sister
about her social security cards.
We can bring our own.
Excellent. Additionally, I will need to know
your sister's income to determine if you
can claim your sister or
niece on your return. If
possible, having your sister available
during our appointment will be helpful so
she can answer
additional questions.
This sounds more complicated than I
've heard. Why does it matter how much
my sister earned? that she told me that she is not
going to claim her daughter and that I can. I
know my wife and I have supported them
for over a year now.
Sure, I understand your concern, but
I need to explore the bigger picture
here. My job is to prepare a
correct tax return. To
do this, I need to ask
deep questions and document the answer.
After all, you wouldn't want the IRS
sending you a letter in a few months
requesting that additional information, would
you?
Now that you put it that way, I don't
want that. Okay. Discuss this with my
wife and sister. Looks like I called the
right person for the job.
Yes, especially when it comes to
refund credits, it's important to get it
right the first time. I look forward to
meeting you all. Have a nice
day.
Likewise.
