Jave you ever wondered why Europe and Asia are separate continents? Well, it's not actually due to historical or political reasons but due to an ancient misunderstanding
If you pull up a world map, you'll notice that most continents are clearly separated from one another.
Australia and Antarctica are completely isolated by vast oceans,
while North and South America are divided by the narrow Isthmus of Panama.
But one exception stands out, Europe and Asia.
Unlike the other continents, Europe and Asia share continuous landmass,
separated only by the Ural Mountains, a range stretching over 2500 kilometers.
This boundary is more artificial than geographic,
and the division between the two is far from obvious.
So, why aren't Europe and Asia considered one single continent, Eurasia?
Well, interestingly, this division doesn't originate from modern politics or cultural differences,
but from an ancient Greek misunderstanding.
In the 6th century BC, the philosopher Anaximander created one of the earliest known world maps.
Based largely on second-hand reports and limited personal exploration,
Anaximander envisioned the Earth as a flat disk surrounded by a vast ocean,
with the known world forming a landmass shaped like a broken circle at the center.
He divided this land into three parts, Europe, Asia, and Libya, or Africa,
separated by two rivers, the Nile and the Faces, now known as the Rioni River in modern-day Georgia.
Due to his limited knowledge of the full extent of the world, Anaximander's division was arbitrary,
based more on convenience and limited geographic knowledge than on any actual natural boundary.
Nevertheless, his conceptual map had a lasting impact,
and the idea of Europe and Asia as two distinct continents persisted,
shaping how we divide the world even today.
