Salma Hayek says gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit was a “spontaneous adventure,” but it almost didn’t happen! Access Hollywood interviewed the actress on May 15 in New York City at the launch party for the magazine’s 2025 issue, and Salma revealed that the suitcase containing dozens of swimsuits — with custom alterations — was lost in transit. The team was forced to pivot at the last minute, but the “House of Gucci” star still looked stunning. Salma also spoke about deciding to go topless for the shoot and what sea creature made a “magical” cameo.
Your cover was hot, it was sexy, you looked like you were in your element, but I know that you were hesitant about taking it on at first.
Talk to me about the decision to take it on and say yes.
The what?
The decision to take it on and say yes.
I got a lot of support from my team, they were all very excited.
I also like to do things that are unexpected, it was very unexpected for me.
It was kind of like a spontaneous adventure.
At some point I was like, yeah, let's go.
But as it got closer, then I started feeling very insecure and having second thoughts and looking for a way out.
You have to be professional.
I had my team also saying, you can't get out of it.
People have been waiting for it.
And then we did it and I loved it.
Talk to me about the different looks.
Which one was your favorite to shoot?
Did you have one in particular?
You know we lost the suitcase.
Tell me about it.
Oh yeah.
I tried like 150 bathing suits.
They altered like a hundred.
Last minute in LA and then I got on a...
Because I flew in from London to LA to do all this.
And I took the suitcase with all the bathing suits.
And all my creams and medications, all the must have.
That's the suitcase that didn't make it.
And so we had to improvise.
They cut some extra bathing suits.
Not out, you know.
And so it was all very hectic.
And then once we got going, it was just like fun.
And you made it work.
You made it work.
And you looked amazing.
Now, before Sports Illustrated, you did this.
Tell me about, you know, why didn't you bring the snake back?
Did you have any thoughts about bringing some out?
No, thank you.
I've had enough of the snake.
No, enough of the snake.
Now, I heard that there was a whale in one of your shots.
Tell me about that.
It was fun.
And it was the first one when I was feeling the most insecure, you know.
And then as soon as I hit the beach and I turned around,
the whale jumped out of the water.
Nobody was even ready to take a picture.
And I kind of felt something magical or something.
I said, let's go.
Let's be free.
Let's own it.
Let's have fun.
So I told them to play me some Bad Bunny and then it was a blast.
And talk to me about the decision to go topless.
How did you decide to do that?
Nobody sees it.
I'm not topless because my arms are the top of my bathing suit
and I'm facing in the other direction.
But you still felt empowered to do that.
Well, you know, sometimes the arms were covering more than those bikinis.
So it's not a problem.
See, like it's not a problem for me.
Well, no, because nobody saw anything.
Well, congratulations.
Have so much fun tonight.
It was so nice to catch up with you.
