Mount Pinnibar Track
In this episode, we continue exploring the Victorian high country of Mongolia,
reaching the Mount Pinabar summit.
I reckon it's one of the best peaks I've ever been up.
Interesting line. It'll do. Get up!
View beauty!
Mount Pinabar baby!
Alrighty, Tom Grogan track. We take this for a little bit to the Mount Anderson track.
A little bit overgrown, I thought.
This being more of a defined track.
Medium graded track, this one.
Old Tom Grogan. Not too bad.
Good fun track.
So yeah, we hook along this for about 15 minutes or so to the turn off.
Up to Mount Anderson, Gibbo and then Pinabar.
That's good.
Decent climb.
Nothing complicated, but just good consistent.
There are serious water bars though.
You need them that steep on something like this, otherwise the water's going to run all the way down and just cook the track.
Healthy tube in my ears, it's starting to pop.
Over 1,000 metres, 1,100 metres at the moment, so it's a decent little climb.
It's really quite overgrown, so I'm not sure how much this gets used.
I thought Tom Grogan was a really popular track.
Good balance here. Get up!
I'm taking my eyes off the prize!
My camera, how's the camera? The camera's still there.
That was a serious nose dive, mate! Jesus!
Alrighty, so on Mount Anderson track.
Now this is the easiest way to get up to Mount Gibbo and Mount Pinabar,
but that's the ridgeline pretty much there and that's Gibbo in front of us.
We're going to follow that ridgeline all along the right, all the way down to Pinabar,
which is the highest peak at the very, very far right, which we'll see shortly.
And that's where the fun should begin for today.
Yeah, you can sort of see here on this track, just through all the water damage,
it just shows you how much rain they've had through here.
So yeah, the bushfires ripped through here in 2019, I think it was.
One of the benefits with the bushfire, obviously they grade the tracks,
so this is still in good nick.
This one? So we're only 1,200 metres,
and I believe that up the top there's around 1,700,
and with Pinabar being the highest peak around this area.
Oh, nice little water hole.
Sweet.
Mount Anderson track.
Alright, nice.
A lot of ruts.
That's Mount Gibbo.
Yeah, nice.
Yeah.
It's just those water ruts, huh?
Yeah, there's going to be plenty of them.
Yeah, pick the line.
So we're about 1,600 metres here, so
we'll probably see Pinabar up the top here.
Yep, there's our track there,
and that's Pinabar,
over there.
So, oh, look at this, huh?
Wowee.
Now, I'm not 100% sure,
but I reckon that's the Kosciuszko National Park
straight in front of us.
There's Mount Kosciuszko,
be the highest peak in there,
which looks like to the left.
Nice little descent here.
Trying to look at the view, but then I'm like,
oh, look at this.
Not too bad.
Little rock steps.
Oh, yeah.
It's quite technical, this.
See that line here.
Take a left line.
Nice.
This would have been fun coming up.
I reckon that's what it's going to be like
on the other side.
Ooh.
Big rocks.
Ooh, the arms are burning.
Ooh.
Oh, we're in it now.
The right now.
I'll jump out the right.
All right, a bit of a climb here.
Let's go.
Give him some space.
The high side of the track.
Away from these water bars.
Not water bars,
just where the water's cracking through.
So, yeah, we just bumped into some 4WD guys
having a feed on the track.
Now we're planning on going down
the backside of Pinner Bar
to Tom Grogan.
Yeah, we told them how bad a condition it's in
and it's winch country.
And, gosh, I don't know how it would be going down it.
I'm sure it would probably be easier going down it
than coming up it,
but Parks Victoria page reiterates how bad it is.
And then, yeah,
just a couple of YouTube videos
of recent guys 4WD-ing up there,
the ones I checked out,
and that's when I went,
ooh, mamma mia.
That is turned to absolute garbage.
And there she is, the old Pinner Bar.
So far, so good along here.
I know we've got a decent climb
right up to the top of the summit
on Pinner Bar,
which is supposed to have
a couple of big rock ledges on it,
so hopefully there's a couple of lines
around the sides of them,
a couple of step-ups.
They're always fun coming up a hill.
Oh, yeah, there we go.
We're on out.
Nice big wombat hole there on the left.
They're the things that make things
a bit difficult for us.
Yeah, there's a nice little step-up.
Keep your eyes up.
Use that line.
Watch the camber.
Coming in hot.
Eyes up, eyes up.
Nice.
Yeah, they're the ones that
can get tricky on the climb, really.
Set your line off.
Definitely in need of a grade
in along here.
Yeah, there you go.
So you can just see it all through here,
just that water.
So they just had a ton,
a ton of rain.
I reckon this hasn't been graded
for about three years,
so it's only a matter of time
before it gets worse and worse
and more traffic drives over it.
Yeah, I reckon it should be
pretty slow going in a four-wheel drive
on this track,
so it makes it a bit quicker for us,
which is good.
Righty, going up again.
Give Adam some space.
That's good.
Let the dust settle a bit.
Yeah, look at these water,
water ruts.
Ooh!
That's why you stand up, mate.
That's why you stand up.
Ooh, which line here?
Adam's gone left.
Nice.
I can't believe how overgrown it is.
I guess with the seasonal closures
and then
it doesn't get as much traffic
as I thought it does out this way.
We are pretty far out.
This would be one of the remotest parts
of the High Country
where we are at the moment.
To the right of us,
down in that valley,
that's Tom Grogan.
That's where the crossing is.
Down the NSW border.
You'll be able to see it up here,
I reckon.
There's Davey Plains,
the ridgeline over there.
Just going to have to
come back another time again.
One day.
One day I'll get Davey's
under the belt.
It's sort of been a blessing in disguise,
though, because we did have
planned to do Davey Plain
and then up Pinnabar,
but then, yeah,
it would have been a disastrous trip
if we did that.
So.
I should get a good view here.
There we go.
Nice.
Look at that.
Beautiful.
There you go.
There's the backside of Kosciuszko
National Park in there.
Yeah, I was just talking with Adam there
and I'm just saying that this would be
interesting coming up this.
So.
There is
a couple of those downhill sections there,
particularly where I said
where those wombat holes,
that is definitely the most
trickiest section
would be the climb
at the moment.
Just good line selection
through there.
You'd probably get up it.
But it's one of those
one of those sections there
you stall, you're dropping the bike,
you come down,
have another crack at it.
When in doubt,
paddle it out.
Put the feet down
and just gas it up.
Oh, that's nice.
Alright, this
looks like our climb here.
Start.
I don't make things tricky,
don't I?
So far,
the track's been really good.
Great fun.
I don't want to curse it though
because we're not at the top.
There's our climb there.
See the track poking through.
I don't want to get the birds wet.
That's not too bad.
It's definitely dried out.
I'll wind it through here
which is good.
Get there, boy.
Get there, bro.
Oh no, his bag's come off.
I can just see him bouncing.
Don't lose the bag.
Sitting down.
You've got to wait for it.
Wait for it.
Alright, he's standing up.
There we go.
It's going to be a long climb.
No motorbikes or no vehicles, Mt Pitabah track is badly eroded in places, particularly between
Mt Gibao track and Tom Grogan station.
So that's this section down here, pretty much what they're talking about.
So what we're, and this is the information that I found on the parks website, so we're
going to take the alternative route to Pitabah down the Shady Creek upper track, which is
supposed to be a not a bad track down to one of the rivers, but we've got to do this final
climb, final push to the top of Pitabah, and then we're up the top.
How's your bag mate?
Did you get it back on?
OK.
Got it back on?
Yeah, thanks.
Yeah, I just saw it go, literally as you started it just went.
Really?
Off the...
Yeah.
What did you think about that climb?
That was a bit scaly in bits wasn't it?
Yeah.
Just plenty of power.
It's those water ruts.
Yeah.
The 500 loved it.
Yeah?
That's awesome.
Awesome.
Yep, 701 got up no dramas.
Wasn't the prettiest climb I've done, but we're up.
We're up, that's it.
That's all that matters.
Final push up to the summit.
Let's do it.
Give it some space on this bit.
Oh no, there it is there.
That's that rock ledge.
Nice.
Interesting line.
It'll do.
Get up.
You beauty.
Still not there.
Go the hardest line, that's it.
Well done.
Keep the rock ledges going, why not?
Another one.
You're almost there.
That's it.
How'd you go on your legs?
So much for it.
I went, I went, I went right.
I went just straight up it.
I ******* got kicked and I ended up going up with the gut.
Yeah, yeah.
There's a couple of little ones here, but that, that's the one that I was talking about.
So awesome.
Let's finish it off bro, to the top.
Yes.
Woohoo.
Now pin them up baby.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
Woo.
Virtual hand pump.
Woo.
Oh man.
Am I happy to be up here or what?
Another summit done.
Just have a look at that.
So there's your Davey Plain.
Down into Tom Grogan.
Up into the Kosciuszko National Park.
And I reckon, I don't know which one's Kosciuszko, but I'm just going to assume it's the tallest peak.
And I know it's around the back.
So I reckon it's this one on the left here, but.
Oh man.
So what are we?
We're 1781 metres up here.
According to, according to my maps.
And that is a well earned climb.
Really happy.
So if you want a good track, still has some technical stuff in it.
Come in that, come in that Mount Anderson track and come up this back way.
If you're, if you're keen or if you're mad, mad as a cut snake, have a crack at the Pinnabar track.
Hard to justify this spot, but I reckon this has got blue rag covered Pinnabar.
It's 360 views the whole way around.
Absolutely.
Mount Bogon over the back there, Victorian side.
And that little knob just there.
That's Mount Gibbo.
It's only a little bit of elevation difference between here and there.
I think it's only about 20 metres below us.
And then you can see the track.
That's the track that we've come down all the way to here.
So it's a pretty good, it's a really good track.
Going back that, going back up, it would be definitely harder than the way we've come.
What are your thoughts, mate?
I reckon it's one of the best peaks I've ever been up.
Yeah, the only, the only one I can compare it to is Blue Rag.
I reckon it's better than Blue Rag.
Yep.
And then this is Shady Creek Upper.
Down here, this ridge, we're going to follow this all the way along, which looks sweet as.
All the way down to the river.
Just because of the wind tonight, we're going to camp probably down low.
Get out of this weather, because we had, we did it last night and it was just, she was pretty, pretty breezy.
But yeah, Pinnabar completed.
Mount Pinnabar, thanks bro. What was your name?
Rob.
Rob, Dan.
Dan.
Didn't even need the pump at all.
Look at that, tinny on the top of Mount Pinnabar.
You've made our day, mate.
Absolutely made our day.
Yeah.
I can see you at the bottom, huh?
We reckon it's better than Blue Rag.
Yeah, oh yeah.
We reckon it's better.
