Darlan began his volleyball journey in 2017 with the youth team of Fluminense FC. In 2018, he transferred to Sesi-Bauru, where he was promoted to the senior team in 2019. He is the younger brother of Alan Souza, who also plays as an opposite hitter for the Brazilian national team.
In 2018, Darlan led the Brazilian U19 national team to victory at the South American Championship and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He participated in the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Boys' U19 World Championship, where Brazil finished ninth. In 2021, he competed in the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship, helping Brazil secure a seventh-place finish.
Darlan made his debut with the Brazilian senior national team in 2022 during the Volleyball Nations League (VNL). That same year, he played a crucial role in Brazil's bronze medal win at the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship. In 2023, he was instrumental in Brazil's qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics, emerging as the team's top scorer during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
During the 2023 Pan American Games, Darlan helped Brazil clinch the gold medal and was honored with the Best Opposite and Best Server awards. In the 2023-2024 Superliga season, he set a new league record by scoring 41 points in a single match, surpassing the previous record of 40 points. He later broke his own record by scoring 48 points in a semifinal match. Darlan's exceptional performance led Sesi-Bauru to the Superliga championship, and he was named both the Most Valuable Player and Best Opposite of the season.
In early 2025, reports indicated that Darlan would join the Italian club Verona Volley for the upcoming season. Known for his powerful spikes and impressive vertical jump, Darlan has a spike reach of 3.70 meters (12 feet 2 inches). He often performs a gesture inspired by the Japanese anime "Naruto" before serving, which has become a signature move.
Darlan's rapid ascent in the volleyball world is marked by his dedication, skill, and the influence of his older brother, Alan. As he continues his professional career in Europe, he aims to further develop his game and achieve his dream of becoming an Olympic champion.
Darlan comes out of nowhere and hits against no blockers this is a monster
kill Bruno going all the way back to Darlan who he has fired up his coach
Penan Delzano I think was more excited for that play after Darlan hit this ball
so we didn't see a ton from Darlan in set one but he has not made very many
really puts everything into it this Darlan
yes what a monster block to Spike Town in the next play from has been sold an
absolute dummy and Krager is lucky not to get hurt that is a warm-up swing for
Darlan courtesy of Bruno Motsuka comes on Rashida
Rando pass put away by Darlan we've had the 1-3-2 the ace the overpass free ball
and now the overpass put away and all three examples clearly so this is nice
isn't it from the back of the court Darlan's up ready to hit springs in his
great pass
so far across the net as well Darlan one-on-one you'd favor the attacker you
really would Darlan is that's great because I think from the angle
that was Byzantine it's gonna drop on the Argentina side
the coach is gonna start pushing some buttons right away
nice off-speed shot there from Darlan out of the back row shots it right over
the block in Lima 13 points for him Oh almost an ace this is gonna give a
chance for Argentina to go to the lead dug by Kachapa here's Darlan and they'll
Polanski is gonna set here comes Byzantine kept up by Polanski and Bruno
Lima is blocked down and Darlan is fired up a couple extra block moves couple
extra swings for Argentina they had their chances nice save from Fernando
there to extend the rally but it's Darlan positioning is this man they want
to see him succeed every time he touches the ball and he succeeds again
with an overpass Darlan thinks he catches the end line and apparently he
does hope they show this on the replay overpass how high he gets up you can see
it right on the line there last night he wasn't even on the roster should be
strikes at the heart of Serbia poison tipped up right through the middle
service ace from that man Darlan back row pipe attack we really don't see it
and it's stats a whole other weapon push there again into the block and Darlan
is the darling again Brazil have eeked out the lead now what I love even after
a great play by Darla very short serve the problem
in the air down on the target then finds the target with another spike
and really good job by Kachapa to disguise jumping a little bit early look
at that as he always does he celebrates every point as if it's his last great
for the crowd block point number three for Brazil look at the right hand
touch must be outside the antenna no challenge coming from anybody
against former any
which then gets recorded though is spike approach
that was a good spike approach proper swing if the difference between the
flat hand and trying to get your hand over the ball as Darlan puts his hand
over the ball once more the change
celebration for Darla Kachapa was up and about with that one as well
it's all going right for Brazil at the moment returns
he's definitely going to the Olympics
so that was some certainty maybe the next four 21 25 29 30 make sure that
you it's your palm of your hand right in the middle of the ball that is the
heard you pick up the tips and hit through the ball
the ball in now everyone's running in now it's not even one-on-one darling
could have crunched that down the line but he was a little four-point lead for
the Netherlands their biggest lead is five go up for that one that we we're
halfway up here in this amazing venue and it looked like he was up level with
us he's jumped so high this is just amazing
on record 332 332 it was 370 370 somewhere and they're back up by one
Fernando back row to Liao that's popped up by Ondringhe. Jorna Liao with the dig
oh goodness me that was his and he's right on the net well he walks right on
the net but he's taken off he's just absolutely and Darlan just starting to
percolate another great serve but that was slowed down a bit by the net
starline clip the back line I mean coach Piazza is pointing to it or is he
pointing it was out now they're not going to challenge just by the slivers
nice and high in the hit so it's can be recycled oh that is a monster block from
Darlan that is what he is out there to do it be just at that time I think TJ
thinking oh I've got a spot I could go and Darlan probably even went too far
reaches back in to get him so a two-point run that's complete for Brazil
there's instant feedback the referees know straight away they get signed green
in or red out instant tension the second the ball hits the floor that is
comfortably in and Darlan is fired up of Thales for Brazil just tested it out
feeling it there and it's an ace
miles in miles in is so much power and speed they don't pass it's a little bit
off no middle available the harder you hit the heart of you fall double block
from Brazil
against Leon and that is shut down the passing of Brazil it's really hard to
bounce towns from Darlin and a flex this is a really good sir from Poland it's
been dealt with it's quite tight on the net
he's having a look right who's with me there you go have that quite tight on the
net he's having a look right who's with me
there you go have that catch up but this time it brings speed great pass by
Dostoyevsky solo block and the more you get Darlin excited the better he plays
he has watched made half a step and gone one step go and he is absolutely shut
that down one hand on the angle he's plus seven on the match Darlin up up and
is it a play yeah exactly
