President Trump has long believed that there is no point in doing any physical exercise, but he makes an exception for golf. The Washington Post’s Marc Fisher explains why
They moved the World Golf Championships from Miami to Mexico City.
Can you believe it?
Donald Trump is very serious about golf.
He has been all of his life.
He played golf going back to college days when he played at Fordham University.
And he continued throughout his business years.
He is someone who, according to people who've played with him, cheats.
He likes to move the ball.
He likes to reposition the ball on the green.
He often comes up with a different number on his score sheet than those who are playing with him might have come up with.
We clearly saw him hit a ball, hook a ball, into a lake at Trump National in Jersey.
And his caddy told him he found it.
This is something that he denies.
But we've now talked to a number of people who've golfed with him through the years who say this is a clear pattern.
And it's a clear symbol of his competitiveness, his drive to win at all costs.
He likes to talk about how he's won various golf championships, although that's not really documented.
Although he's a very good golfer.
Even Tiger Woods has said that for a 70-year-old, he drives the ball a remarkable distance.
I'd like to see golf be an aspirational game where you aspire to join a club someday.
You want to play and, you know, you go out and you become successful.
That's what I think.
Now, a lot of people feel differently, but that's the way I feel.
Through the years, he's had a strong belief that exercise is bad, that you're born with a certain amount of energy, like a battery,
and that you deplete that energy over time, and therefore it's a waste to spend it on exercise.
But he makes an exception for golf, which he sees as both a social activity and a way of asserting his power, his authority.
He uses his golfing time to meet with people who want something from him or people he wants something from,
and he has done this throughout his business career and has continued through his time in the White House.
We had a great day with the president today.
We did talk about some health care reform.
I think the sides are getting closer and closer together, and I remain very optimistic that we will get an Obamacare repeal.
He's spent 21 days on the golf links so far.
That compares with 11 days that Barack Obama had spent golfing at this point in his presidency.
Obama ought to get off the golf course and get down there.
So then Trump comes into office, and lo and behold, he's off golfing on the weekends.
His administration has explained this as these are working sessions.
He had a mini cabinet meeting the other day down, or two weekends ago, down at his club in Virginia,
and I remember so many people jumping to the conclusion that he was going down and playing golf.
Just because you go somewhere doesn't necessarily mean you get it.
So on a couple occasions, he's actually conducted meetings there.
He's actually had phone calls.
The White House has gone to some lengths to hide the fact that he's actually out there golfing
as well as working while he's at his golf clubs, and this is something that Trump is apparently sensitive about.
Nonetheless, he continues to do it virtually every weekend.
