In this video I'm using only three palette knives on this painting. Painting with the palette knife
is a unique and expressive technique that adds texture and depth to your artwork. Unlike brushes,
palette knives are used to apply paint directly on the canvas, creating ball imbuster effects.
Here's the step-by-step guide to help you master these dynamic painting methods.
In this painting I'm using a MDF panel which I have treated with my homemade
gesso and at the moment I'm just doing the basic drawing what I want to paint
and this is the result of the painting in the end. Starting on the top with the cobalt blue,
blending with the titanium white, using your palette knife by blending.
Selecting your palette knives as well is important in different situations. Select a palette knife
that suits your desired effects. Long blade knives are ideal for sweeping strokes,
while shorter rounded knives are better for detail work.
Experiment with different shapes to see which one is you prefer.
Like you can see I was using the Payne's grey for the distant mountains in the background
and now I'm using actually yellow orange at first before I do red oxide,
colour and burnt umber on the front and like you can see I take my time to shape it up and
straight lines and then different effects you can. It's amazing how the different palette
or well palette knives can make different effects by sweeping them. You can see how
I do the stage by stage from the sky first and then the background mountains and then the front
mountains with the fields and now the middle field. So it's a step by stage with the sweeping
motion with a palette knife and what I've done is always wiping and cleaning my palette knives
that paint doesn't get smudged too much. This one what I'm doing now underpainting I want to
get it yellow and then top it up what colours I want on top but gently gently you top it up
not pushing that too much because then it will get mixed up with the underpainting
unless you want it and it's all about to have lots of paint on your palette knife when you do
all the moves and it's only one or two moves and then you have to reload the palette knife with the
paint and then don't forget to clean the old palette knife if you change your colours because
otherwise it's gonna go all messy and it's all about experimenting with your palette knife
and you can always scrape them off like I do here if you make a mistake just scrape them off and add
some colour reloading your palette knife with a new fresh colour and just top it up
like you can see here on the front of that cabin I smudged it up a little bit but I'm not
worrying about it because I'm gonna add more colour on the top. I did forget to tell you that I
also use the paper towel which I use usually use for trees to make the foliage the leaves of the
tree and only one little brushwork I did with this painting was the cabin roof I wanted to make
it look more rusty and what I usually do when the painting is nice and dry it's nice to tweak it up
a little bit and here I'm just fixing up my smudge area which was the whole the plan as well anyway
to add up a little bit more orange colour I tried different things here but it wasn't working
very well so I just blended it up a little bit and finish it with the picket fence
and palette knife is a great tool for that because it does the straight lines and now it's time to do the
wire lines with your palette knife because it's a fresh paint it's easy to do
and it doesn't have to be a straight thread because it looks more natural
when you do it by hand without any help of the straight line
and adding up a little bit more colour for earth
tapping up and swiping it gently gently on the top of the under painting
and here we're just finalizing a little bit the straight lines in the paddock
we're getting our end of the video now and thank you for your company I really appreciate it
if you want to see other techniques I use in other landscape videos check it out and
see you next time thank you bye now
