Let's learn together and make English fun and easy
Hello everyone
Welcome back to English podcast for you. I'm your host Maria
Today I want to share with you what happened when I opened my fridge and realized I had absolutely
No food at home
Have you ever had that moment when you feel hungry, but there's nothing to eat?
That was me yesterday
So I had to get ready and go out for some serious grocery shopping
I'll take you step by step through the whole experience
From making my list, picking fresh food, to chatting with people at the store
Along the way, you'll learn useful English words and real conversations that you can use anytime
Let's get started
So it all started yesterday morning. I woke up feeling extra hungry
You know that kind of hunger where your stomach makes weird growling sounds
Yeah
That was me I
Walked straight to the kitchen. I was dreaming of coffee
toast
maybe some eggs, I
opened the fridge with high hopes and
boom
Reality hit me. The fridge was almost completely empty
there was
one lonely lemon an
almost empty jar of peanut butter a
bottle of ketchup and
A sad dried up carrot in the corner. I
Checked the freezer just a half-eaten frozen pizza and some ice cubes
Then I opened the cupboards
No rice
No pasta
No cereal
No coffee
Not even tea. I looked at everything and said to myself
This is a food emergency. I have to go grocery shopping
Right now I grabbed my notebook and sat down at the kitchen table to make a list I wrote down everything I needed
fresh fruits and vegetables
bread eggs
milk cheese
yogurt coffee tea juice
chicken and maybe some fish
pasta rice and spices and yes
something sweet
chocolate or cookies I
Also added a few things for cleaning dish soap paper towels and sponges. I
looked at my list and thought
This is going to be a big shopping trip. I
Put on my sneakers grabbed my reusable shopping bags and headed out
The Sun was shining and the weather was perfect
warm with a cool breeze
Birds were singing people were walking their dogs and everything felt calm
After about 10 minutes, I arrived at the supermarket. I wiped the handle of my cart with a sanitizing wipe
just to be safe and
Then walked inside
The automatic doors opened with a soft whoosh and I was hit with the cool air inside. Ah
I love that fresh supermarket smell
Kind of clean kind of cold with a little scent of fruit and bread
first stop
fruits and vegetables I
picked red
juicy apples
bright yellow bananas
sweet smelling oranges
fresh green lettuce
ripe red tomatoes
Purple onions a few cucumbers and carrots. I
Checked each item carefully. I like choosing fruits that feel firm and fresh
Next I went to the bakery section
the smell of fresh bread filled the air
So delicious. I picked a loaf of soft white bread and some whole grain rolls
Even treated myself to a small croissant
Then I went to the dairy section. I
Everything looked neatly arranged and super fresh
After picking some veggies and bread I headed to the meat section where a friendly worker was standing behind the counter
He smiled and asked hi. What can I get for you today?
Hi, I'd like half a kilogram of chicken breast, please
Sure, would you like it with the bone or boneless?
boneless, please
And if you could cut it into small pieces, that would be perfect no problem, I'll cut it up for you anything else
Hmm. Yes. Do you have fresh salmon today? Yes, we do. It's right here. Would you like a fillet?
Yes, one fillet, please. Not too big. You got it. Anything else? No, that's all for today
Thank you so much
You're welcome. Have a great day after that. I headed to the dry foods aisle. I
Found rice spaghetti a jar of tomato sauce and a bag of lentils. I
Also picked up a few cans of beans and corn
Before leaving I walked down the snack aisle just for fun. I picked up some dark chocolate my favorite a
small bag of chips and cookies for later
Finally I grabbed some household items
dish soap a sponge
paper towels a pack of tissues I
Checked my list
Everything was done. I walked to the checkout area
My cart was full but organized. Hi. Did you find everything? Okay. Yes. Thank you
I found everything I needed
That's great, do you have our store card? No, I don't is it worth getting
Yes, it gives you discounts and points. It's free. Okay. I'll think about it next time
Thanks
The cashier began scanning my items
Beep beep beep. I packed my groceries into my own bags as they were scanned
Your total is sixty three dollars and twenty five cents
Will you be paying with cash or card card, please?
All right, you can tap your card when you're ready
Perfect. Would you like a receipt? Yes, please
Here you go. Have a great day
Thanks you too. I
Carried two big bags in each hand
They were a little heavy, but I felt happy
When I got home, I washed my hands unpacked everything and finally made myself a sandwich and a cup of coffee
The fridge was full again. I looked at it and smiled
Now this is what a fridge should look like and that's the story of how I turned an empty fridge into a happy full kitchen again
