The nucleus of the Earth contains a golden reservoir vessel,
and it gradually flows through the mantle towards the crust,
according to a new study.
The nucleus of the Earth contains a golden reservoir vessel
that moves towards the surface.
A recent study, based on the analysis of isotopes from volcanic rocks
from the depths of the lithosphere,
revealed that the precious metals, including gold,
which are found today in the Earth's crust,
began their long journey towards the surface,
emerging from the middle of the planet,
carried by the magma in motion.
Although we access the gold found in the crust,
it represents only a small part of the total amount existing on Earth.
Like a mythical dragon, our planet keeps most of the gold
hidden in the depths.
Researchers suggest that more than 99% of the Earth's gold
is found in the metal core,
and it would be enough to cover all the crusts
with a layer of 50 cm of gold.
This distribution makes sense.
During the formation of the planet,
heavier elements migrated to its soft interior,
accumulating in the differentiated nucleus,
in a process known as the Iron Catastrophe.
Later, the impact of meteorites brought new amounts of gold
and other heavy metals to the crust.
Although there is clear evidence that the primordial helium
and iron-heavy isotopes flow from the nucleus,
it was not clear until now
what percentage of the heavy metals from the surface
comes from the nucleus and how much from the space.
However, there is a method of investigation.
Ruthenium isotopes, a heavy and precious metal.
The isotopes are variants of the same chemical element
that have a different number of neutrons.
The ruthenium in the Earth's nucleus
has a slightly different isotopic composition
from that of the surface.
The difference, however, was so subtle
that until recently it could not be detected.
However, gold does not reach the surface in a rapid rhythm
and we can not even go 2,900 km
to the nuclear border to obtain it.
Sooner or later, this discovery will provide us with new information
about our planet and possibly about other distant planets.
