"Not all succulents are the same and some are easier to grow than others. I've grown several hundred different succulent cultivars in my nursery to date and these are my top easy to grow plants.
I will also talk a bit about why i think the succulents in this video are hardy based on growing 100s if not 1000s of them over the years."
A few weeks ago I made a video where I listed 15 difficult to grow succulents
and today we're going to have a look at some easy to grow succulents.
Just like with the previous video, this is very much a personal list though I do grow
these plants for a living and have grown a minimum of a few hundred of each of the succulents listed.
Having said that, not everyone may have the same experience as me with the following plants
and that is to be expected. Succulents are living, breeding things and your climate,
weather and many other factors can influence how well they grow.
Though it is very likely the following will be easy to grow for most.
Aeonium arboreum is a fabulous garden succulent that can grow so well it is considered a weed in
some parts of the world. It can be grown in sunny as well as shaded parts of the garden but beware
as Aeonium are not very frost hardy. If you get frost and snow in winter you can grow this plant
in larger pots and bring it indoors during freezing temperatures. It may however not do
well indoors permanently. If you'd like more color Aeonium, Schwarzkopf and Sunburst are good hardy
cultivars as well. Hedgehog is one of my favorite cultivars and I grow it in my gardens and in
larger pots. It tolerates full sun during heat waves of over 40 degrees Celsius, lots of rain,
droughts and even mild frosts. Snow and continuous frost can cause burns and death and so it's best
to grow it in pots that can be brought indoors if you get cold winters. Aloe can tolerate being
indoors in a very bright spot as well. This is one of my favorite succulents of all time.
It will thrive almost anywhere. Erycoides grows as a small shrub and the leaf arrangements kind
of resembles its popular but difficult to grow cousin the Buddha's temple. It tolerates heat,
cold, rain and drought. It will also grow in a bright spot inside. It may not do well in snow
though so do bring it indoors for cold winters. Crassula is a huge and varied genus with many
extremely tough plants. Crassula ovata and its cultivars such as the Golem, Hobbit etc are
great tough succulents as well. Echeveria is one of the most popular genera out there due to the
amazing leaf arrangements of these plants. The problem is that many Echeveria can be a bit
challenging to grow mainly due to their susceptibility to water-related disease.
However, there are a few that will tolerate water and rain. Elegans in my experience is one of them.
This beautiful succulents is best grown outdoors and will even tolerate mild frosts.
It can struggle in snow though and will need to overwinter indoors.
Echeveria are not great indoor plants and should be grown outdoors when possible.
This succulent is also known as ghosty or ghost plant and it ticks a lot of boxes.
It tolerates heat, drought, rain and mild frosts. It's a great garden and pot plant but it may not
do well indoors. And it is very pretty. The shades of pink will instantly add color to any garden.
Most plants in the Graptopetalum genus are very hardy too.
Many Haworthia fasciata and the very similar Atenuata are good hardy plant. They are small
growing and therefore best kept in pots. Due to their high tolerance of shade they are popular
houseplants. And one of the greatest things is that they will be okay when you overwater but
are drought hardy at the same time. This cactus lookalike is very cute and gets amazing flowers.
The spines are soft and cannot break the skin. Vernea can grow indoors or outdoors but they'll
look much better when exposed to plenty of light. They are also unlikely to flower indoors unless
they are on a sunny windowsill. Just like with all the other succulents Vernea tolerates rain
and humidity and drought at the same time. Tormentosa is a fuzzy succulent nicknamed the
panda plant. This small shrub is a fabulous garden succulent that will do well in frost-free gardens
and pots. It is said to be a good indoor plant though I'd recommend plenty of direct sun otherwise
it can grow a bit laggy. Personally I prefer to grow it outdoors to get the pretty edges and
compact growth. Many kalanchoe are great hardy plants though do be careful as they are a bit
toxic to humans and pets. The toxins are concentrated in flowers and can be lethal to pets if enough is
ingested. This fabulous bush is one of my favorite garden succulents that will grow well in full sun
and also shade. It tolerates a bright spot indoors and is a popular species to grow as a bonsai.
It is not very frost tolerant though and will need to spend frosty snowy winters indoors.
I wasn't entirely sure if rhipsalis should be on this list as it's not very tolerant of strong sun
but it's an amazing shade and indoor succulent that will grow well in spots that are not that
bright. It tolerates high humidity and rain and is a perfect succulent for bathrooms.
They will do well in shade gardens and are fantastic hanging plants.
If you forget to water they'll be fine as well due to drought tolerance.
Most rhipsalis are hardy so if you can't find cereus cola any other cultivar will be good.
This lovely succulent is a popular hanging basket plant and it is pretty hardy.
It tolerates sun, shade and even a life in a bright spot indoors. It doesn't mind rain or drought and
looks fantastic just doing its thing trailing or hanging. Many sedum with chunky leaves are
very tough plants but most do better outdoors than indoors. Those with small leaves can burn
easily in strong sun and are typically not as hardy. This ground cover succulent is also known
as blue chalk sticks and is best grown outdoors. It spreads well and can be grown in any part of
the garden tolerating shade and sun. However it is not a good indoor plant and is not to be grown
in climates with cold winters. You may also know this succulent as sedeveria starburst.
It's a popular and common garden succulent that spreads as a ground cover. It looks great in tall
pots and will eventually hang down. It's best grown outdoors but can overwinter inside during
very cold winters. It's a little frost tolerant but snow and persistent frost would likely kill it.
But you will not regret having this in your garden. It pretty much looks after itself which
is the reason it's so popular. Lots of graptil sedum cultivars are great tough plants.
This beautiful pink hybrid is very common in succulent gardens and grows huge. Individual
rosettes can measure over 20 centimeters which is nearly 8 inches. It spreads and is best grown
in gardens or large pots. Freddives can tolerate very mild frosts but again it's likely to die
in colder climates and it's not suitable for indoors. But in the garden it is an absolute
star and very easy to grow. Most graptoveria hybrids are superb garden succulents.
Mayalan is very similar to Francesco Baldi and is a spreading succulent. It's an outdoor plant
that will be fine for overwintering indoors but should not be kept inside long term.
It's good for pots and garden and will tolerate a lot of neglect. Just like with the two previous
hybrids many seduveria will not disappoint and are very easy to grow. And that is all for today.
