WITHOUT PRODUCT REVIEWS, SPONSORS, DONATIONS AND STICKER SALES, I’d have to go back to work and not do ANY videos, because you can’t live without any income.
Hey guys, how you doing? It's Henry. Emotion blows!
I was just editing my last video and I get this voicemail from a neighbor.
He doesn't usually call me so I'm thinking
uh, it's kind of important. Anyway, I couldn't do anything because
I'm in the middle of like editing so it's like uploading and I can't touch the phone. Otherwise, I'd have to redo it again.
So after I finished uploading it, right, he says that he's driving down the street
and he sees a tractor on the side of the road and he wanted to warn me about it and tell me
Hey, it's here
You want to pick it up? You should go get it
It's a half hour ago because I was uploading
So I just after I heard the voicemail I jumped in my car and I said I gotta go see
So i'm driving along that street that he told me it's uh on and i'll show you if I get it
I mean it is sunday
It's a very busy road
All right, just uh another half mile down that road look at here I just pulled over
It's a lt1000
With a Kohler 16 horsepower
Cool and it's a uh manual
I'm gonna take it
I'm gonna hook up my ramps and all that
Hey, so you guys saw uh owner came out and uh, he says that uh, he's in his 60s
And he actually rebuilt the transmission before
And then this year after two years of sitting in his backyard because he has landscapers
He decided that he was gonna just like try to start it up
He said the engine runs and it works
The only thing is when he tried to start it up again
It wouldn't start because it's been sitting for two years, right? It needs a lot of other stuff
Um when he did park it two years ago, he said the transmission wouldn't work
He would shift it and shift it and didn't do anything. So I mean maybe the drive belt broke or maybe
his transmission fix
Was not really a fix
Uh, but anyway, I mean it's a hauler, you know, it's got no deck or nothing. I'm, sorry
It doesn't have a deck or anything
I hope it has a battery in there because I don't have any more batteries
I'd love to recondition a battery if it was low, but it's an lt1000
I got another one in the backyard a hauler same thing
but this is all green and that one's like gray and
Burgundy and whatever, but I don't know man. Uh, whatever it is. It's got a kohler command engine that he says runs. So
Just picking up an engine is definitely worth it. I'm stoked
I'm almost home and uh, it's unloaded
All right, there we go
Uh unloaded off the truck luckily split
And I just put air in the tires seems to hold air pretty well
Got 20s in the back
No gas
This is a kohler command 16
Voltage regulator
Fuel solenoid
I had to take this uh front hanger off because you wouldn't be able to roll it forward
Also, so it seems like it's in gear it rolls but it rolls like it's in gear even though this says neutral
You can hear the pulley on the transmission moving
So it's like out of whack like if you put it like that
It does seem like it goes to maybe first or second gear or something like that
But then if you try to put it into neutral, it's still in gear. You can hear it
Okay
Battery or no battery
Yes battery
340 cca
autocraft
I think autocraft is from
auto zone or
advanced auto parts
I have no idea. It's a 99
99 or 89. It's 99 89 would wouldn't look like this. It's a 99
Manual so it doesn't have the transmission disengage lever. That's cool. Hey
It's cool because it's free
free
for free
That's right free another free tractor we can work on that'll make like 12 tractors i'll have
Nobody's buying them though. My prices are too high
What do you guys think?
Yeah, right
Nothing it was on the switch it was on
Double stack pulley. I'll look at this when I go inside
I want to make sure all the belts are here
Drive belt as well as the motor deck belt
Let me check the uh
Gas see about the earl
plenty of earl
and clean
Like smell it
Smells like oil not gas
At the very least we got parts really good parts for an lt1000
But the main thing is a Kohler command engine to use
scores
I'm, just kidding. I'm kidding
This battery is really dead ski because it's charging super slow
You can see it's just one little bar that's blinking so it's it's completely dead and it's charging at 2.1 volts
On the 12 volt standard setting this battery charger can charge agm
lithium
I don't know what the other one is, but and then after it's fully charged it goes into recondition mode
Which has a built-in desulfator?
So this is pretty cool
And just let it charge overnight and see what happens. We'll come back to this in the morning
I tried charging this battery with two different smart chargers that battery is dead ski
Also, I kind of maybe
Figured out that since I was putting my camera under here, right? What did you guys see?
I was looking at the video and the drive belt is not even on
so that could may or may not be the reason why
He says the transmission doesn't work, but I still feel like the transmissions
um messed up because
I mean even in neutral you could still hear the uh,
The pulley spinning so I think there's something wrong with the transmission which in this case would
Would make it really bad because I would just use the engine then, you know
um
I could swap the transmission out of the
Burgundy one in the backyard, but that is tricky because while it is also a manual
The shifter is in between the legs which has different linkages to the transmission, but we'll find that out tomorrow
uh, I took
a battery out of a toro
um wheelhorse
In the shed because I haven't used this battery in like a year. Let's see if this battery works
so this battery is actually a
Agm battery for a lawn tractor. How about that? Huh?
Is really good, uh 250 ccis
So let's test this battery. It's been sitting in that. Uh toro wheelhorse for like a year and a half
With this battery in it and throughout the winter and stuff. Let's see if it's good. Wow
100 healthy 100% charged and it's been sitting there for a year. That's amazing
I'm gonna see if they'll send me some more
So tomorrow when I wake up we'll put that battery
in there
and uh
See if we can get that kohler command to fire up
And see if the transmission works and then figure out what we're gonna do with this
Whether we take the engine out and put it somewhere else
Swap the transmissions out with another one to get this going
We'll make that determination tomorrow. Okay. Good morning. It's like the fourth day now
I'm gonna finally put a battery in here. We're gonna use that. Um u plus
Agm battery that sat for a year and a half in my shed
And it didn't lose any health or any battery life
100 on both that's amazing
How it could sustain full charge for a year and a half from sitting?
Yeah, we'll put that battery in here and we'll see if this uh cranks up as you can see after
My putting air in these tires when I first got it sitting here for three days
This is trashed
Dry rot really bad
and cracks
This is probably not saveable even atf ain't gonna fix that but I might try
While I was taking the battery out I figured I could take the battery box and check out the condition of the
Transmission pulley and the belt was off the pulley
So I put the tractor on its side
to get better access
I had to undo the
idler and the tensioner pulley
You know just to get the belt off of it so that I would have slack
To put it around the main transmission pulley the big one
This linkage here was bent
Also kind of jiggly
But it looks like it works
This could be tightened more see
That could have something to do with it
It has too much play
It's not going to shift correctly
Anyway belt is on there. I'm gonna try to tighten that nut
Hopefully that fixes the transmission problem
Then i'll install this battery
And give it a couple cranks
All right belts on the transmission I tightened up all that loose linkage over there that gives it a lot of play
You can't sit on this because you'll get ganneria from this
Not that I don't already have ganneria
Brake is already done
It's not that this is going to work, but I want to see if it cranks
ready
new battery
Nada, so we've got a safety switch or something that's busted or solenoid one of those things
Jump the solenoid just to see if it cranks, you know, so many people
Don't know how to jump the solenoid
That's pretty amazing. I'm going to show you real quick. It's actually not that easy
When the gas tank is in the way
But with lt 1000s the reason why I love these uh tractors so much is because it's so easy to work on
it's just two uh
10 millimeter or three eights bolts that hold the
Um gas tank on gives me an opportunity to remove the gas tank so that we could um
Clean it out on the inside
By dumping it upside down you can remove this what's called a um
Plenum isolates the air
But what I have no idea
And the gas tank just pops out like that
Move it to the side
And this area is trash
And blow this out a little
All right. Now we're going to jump the solenoid. Okay. So first locate the solenoid you see it
Yep
Solenoid is right here. This is a four post solenoid. See the red wire going into this one
This red wire is coming from the battery in the rear
This red one here is connected to the starter
This red wire here is the trigger wire that sends 12 volts of electricity
From the ignition key, right? You turn the key
12 volts go into here. This is the ground just the same thing as if you attach this thing to steel
A plunger moves up energizes plunger moves up makes contact with these two lugs
Giving 12 volt power through thick wires to the starter which turns the flywheel of the engine
Because this this solenoid is not even clicking when you turn it, right?
Means that you have a safety switch that's messed up. So you bypass all that stuff
By creating your own plunger if you will by putting this in between the two lugs
There you go, so
we have
Power going to the starter but the starter's not moving see
So the starter motor is turning but the bendix pinion gear on the starter is not moving upwards
To make contact with the teeth on the flywheel to turn it
So sometimes you can bang the starter or you'd have to remove this lid
Have access to the bendix gear use like a slotted screwdriver and pry it up and down
To get it loose and free from it sitting on the rusted shaft for a long time
I'm going to jump the solenoid and bang on it
That means I got to remove this and have access to the lugs over here
Of course, of course, it's never easy
Because the block is aluminum
And you have the steel bolts going into it. This one typically always breaks these bolts because these are only like, uh,
516 volts so I go slow
On this side you have to remove the voltage regulator connection
No joke. I'm, not kidding. You guys can go count yourself
This is probably the 50th
Kohler command engine i've seen or had
Look at that
This box is connected to a wiring loom
That is connected to the magneto
That is amazing never seen that before leave it in the comments guys if you've seen this before and tell me what it's for
That's that's a new one for me
Anyway
Now you have access to the bendix gear as you can see. It's very rusty. I'm gonna
Shove a little bit of penetrating oil all over that thing
Get a slotted screwdriver and kind of pry that gear upwards while it's spinning
It's going to be tough with this. Uh
Plastic cover hanging here. I don't want to break it. Should I disconnect that ----?
I disconnected the ground strap to the voltage regulator so I can flip the cover that way
And those wires check it out
So you got two wires going to that magneto
Actually a whole ton of wires going to the magneto
God i've never seen that before it's black one. Obviously seems to be like a kill
It's an ignition kill switch that's strange, huh
Some of the wires have been eaten up. Looks like there has been
A mouse nest in here. I don't know. I think you could bypass this
You don't need that
Maybe this is the cause of it not starting. You know what I mean?
Not giving off spark because all this stuff is connected to it
Yeah, this is definitely the ignition kill
One of these wires is ignition kill it's fascinating
All right. Well anyway
Here the bendix gear
Turns because it spins, but it doesn't pop up stuck
So i'm going to take a slotted screwdriver stick it under there pry it upwards while I spin it
And first put a penetrating oil on it
moving
There we go
There we go see that
That engine sounds pretty good
Now we fix that starter
Let's remove the air cleaner assembly so we can blow some ether in there some starting fluid since of course
Gas tank is empty
It's on choke
Releasing it doesn't do anything
Which means it's stuck
Yeah, that's a lot of varnish. I mean it's like gooey and stuff
Look at that
some kind of chemical reaction
Isn't that cool?
Here for you good enthusiasts, and I know you're interested because i'm interested
That's what that module looks like
No idea what it is, but it has something to do with the ignition and a magneto kill
Look at the condition of that magneto
That's trash
We probably don't not going to get spark out of this i'd really doubt this would spin and turn over
All right, make sure the ignition is turned on
we have
Stuff in there. It is on choke
This bendix gear does move. So let's see if it turns over
Hey
It works
That's great
So look what I did. I wanted to test a solenoid. So i've got this regular wire on two alligator clips
And I put one end on the positive
And then i'm gonna tap
The trigger wire right there. I took that red wire off. It used to be a red wire there black wire there
I took the red one off. That's the trigger wire i'm gonna put 12 volts manually to that thing
And what I did was I touched it and it was just clicking clicking clicking
Which means that the plunger is not moving from the solenoid upwards to connect the two lugs there
So I took a hammer and I banged it while I was energizing it and it worked. Let me show you
So here's a positive feed of voltage to the thing
See how it clicks like that i'm not moving
The plunger is not moving exactly
Perfect so you move it a little bit it goes up and down
So now that works disconnect this wire again
And try the key
Put this thing back on here again
Try the key
No still doesn't work which means the safety switch is messing it up
Those damn safety switches, huh?
Oh, wait a minute. Here we go
I gotta show you what happened now. I know what that box is for
that box is a
a switch
manual switch that the guy previous installed so you have the
Ignition on right and watch this
It's a uh push button start
That's kind of cool I like that well now we know what that ---- is for and as you saw it's not the safety switches
It's that lever
That toggle switch that controls everything there. So it's good
Um, kind of cool. I like it
So we don't have to replace the solenoid because we tested it
We don't have to replace any safety switches or bypass anything because it works from the seat
That's all we need is for it to be able to start see
It won't start regularly
It won't start oh it does start without with this without a key let's take the key out
How about that this thing starts without a key
so with the
Gas tank off. I cleared out some debris in there and it's just a little bit of varnish
I blew
Through this mouth over here and I didn't feel like any air was going to the carburetor
So it's solenoid might be stuck closed or something like that but
Gas tank is relatively clean with some varnish on it. Put a little bit of gas in there. See if it trickles
Into here and see if it starts and runs on its own
If it doesn't we probably need a carburetor clean. So here we go. I'm not even going to sit on it
Yeah, so it's not getting any gas to the carburetor so unfortunately we have to do a carburetor clean
So in case you guys didn't know, uh, these polar command carburetors are infamous for leaking
Let's take the hood off because it's in my way for the carburetor clean
Craftsman's you just lift up
Disconnect the headlight module wire just let this hang like that
This setup actually is kind of cool. I like it
two ton millimeter nuts
Take off this
Air filter base
It's attached on to the breather to the valve cover
Which is all broken anyway
It's trashed
It's not really that important either but
It's all busted there's a condition of that carburetor flap still opens and closes
Remove the hose clamp and the fuel line to the carburetor
Greenage actually it's flowing though
Now it's cleaner and it's flowing really well
Fuel line is really hard. That's what she said
So this carburetor is really dirty i'm gonna take it off
It's the fuel solenoid ground
gross
Some sticky tars on there
Look at that gasket
Just look at it. So no fuel was getting in here at all. You can tell it's it's dry even this crap
You know what, I think I might have another hypo carburetor
Look what we got here for my friends over at hypostore.com
Remember if you order parts from hypo, they have all kinds of parts for your lawn mowers
Remember to use discount code henry
For 10 off i'll leave a link in the description
so this whole kit
Comes with the solenoid fuel solenoid wire the gaskets
Here it is an exact replacement
that carburetor
There's the front there's the side the back
Which one's the hyper one?
And the top
So instead of spending a lot of time cleaning this
And in this case the condition of this carburetor sucks
You'll spend all day trying to clean this then
What are you gonna get a seven out of ten chance that it will start? No, this thing's like ten dollars
13
Something like that with shipping
Is an hour of your life not worth 13?
You'll never get that hour back
People ask me. Hey henry. How come you don't really clean carpers anymore?
Of course I clean carbs. I clean carbs all the time
but
If I have a brand new hyper carburetor in stock
Why should I?
I'll just put the new one on
You don't think this deserves a new one
A running engine, of course, it's worth it. We'll just put this back on
I'm, not gonna use the solenoid because I don't think it works
I don't think power is coming to this
And i'm not gonna try to splice this and do the electronics to get this to go. I find that fuel solenoids suck
So what do I usually do you guys watch my videos over the past seven years?
I cut the valve so that there's no issues with it popping up
Going down popping up going down and blocking the fuel going up the emulsion. I just hate them. They cause more problems than not
I'm going to show you in real time how I do it just in case you don't know how
It's usually a half inch wrench
Take the solenoid off
See that valve when you energize it it goes in when you de-energize it goes out
When you turn off your tractor this goes up
Blocks the emulsion tube prevents any more fuel from going it up and prevents backfires
Which this is the primary reason for a fuel solenoid is to prevent it from going boom
I like it when it goes boom. I'm just gonna cut it right there. So we have no problems
I don't know
It's kind of a thick shaft
It's zipped still a little bit sticking out i'm gonna use a grinder and clean that up
Here we go put this back on the carburetor again
There's the inside
brand new ski
Remember to match this up
see
like a puzzle
Let's install this now now instead of worrying about cleaning it
We just put this back on
I gotta clean this ---- out
So fuel is flowing as you guys saw
And it's not leaking which means that the new carburetor
Needle is seating
Bowl is filling up with fuel pushing the float upwards to seat the
Needle into the hole so that no fuel is spilling out the mouth
If you have fuel spilling out the mouth means your needle is not seating
It's going a little bit and then getting caught somewhere and fuel is continuously
Leaking and coming out your mouth
It does make its way into the crank case and then dissolves the oil in your crank case
And then it'll smoke like crazy and then your engine will probably blow up because the oil is too thin
For it to protect the engine. I know a whole lesson
in this one video
If you guys learned something in this video
I'm sure you have
learned something
Hit that subscribe button it really helps the youtube algorithm that allows me to continue making small engine content
like this one
Should start without spray. All right, here we go. We have troubleshooted it. I think we've got it going on, right?
Fix the starter
figured out that that module was this
Push button thing we got gas flowing. We have a new hyper carburetor on there saved us a ton of time
Will it run
The rpms could be higher
Ain't that great guys this engine sounds wonderful
that hyper carb
Smooth everything just seems perfect. Not even many adjustments at all
So i'm gonna put this all back and we've got a running engine and we'll see if this thing moves forward and backwards
All right, I put everything back now, let's see if it moves forward and backwards
Is this transmission good
What do you guys think transmission is good or bad at the silicone this stand this plastic thing
So it runs
uh
When you have the shifter all the way to if it the shifters on neutral, it's reverse
Uh neutral is like first gear
First gear is second gear and so on
Uh, that tire is trashed
What do you guys think I think I have enough air in it now to go around the block give it a test drive
Let's go
Yeah, so maybe you still need to do power to get ignition
So after testing we know that you actually do still need the key
So i'm going to keep the key on a key chain instead of loose like that
Look what I got hypo sent me a bunch of key chains. Look at that
It's also a can opener
It's kind of cool, huh?
So, how about it guys we picked this off the street for free
for
That's right free brought it home
Put a brand new hyper carburetor on there that engine sounds brand new now
Fantastic. Thanks to hyper for the parts, of course, and remember if you order any hyper parts, I'll leave a link in the description
Use the code
Henry for a 10 discount on your entire order
We put the belt back onto the transmission again kind of fix the linkages a little
Just now when we tried to go for a ride around the block the belt came off of the transmission pulley
The linkages need some adjustment, but we do know that it does work forward and backwards just needs some kind of adjustment
I'm, not sure what i'm going to do with this tractor yet. I might just steal the engine for
Putting it on the six wheeler desert sand project that I had because that engine has a leaky cola purge that
Leaks oil and it burns oil and it smokes and everything. Maybe i'll just put this engine sounds great
Runs great. Maybe i'll just put that engine on to the six wheeler
That's what I might do
And this thing i'll sell for parts or something like that the time it took for me to put the key on the type of key
chain
These tires already done as you can see this huge slit over here
Three out of the four tires don't hold air. They come right out. So I don't know what i'm going to do about the ganneria seat
Maybe i'll tape it up so you don't get ganneria or only get syphilis from it not full-blown ganneria
It's not like you don't already have syphilis and ganneria, right? Come on
I mean it is a hauler right? We have no deck for it
Anyway, but the tractor itself is in pretty good shape that uplus battery is unbelievable sat in my shed for a year and a half
100 healthy 100 charged
From sitting for a year and a half
I'm gonna have to contact uplus for some more batteries
If you guys are interested in the uplus battery, I'll also leave a link in the description. Go check it out
Hope you guys enjoyed the video remember to like share and subscribe so I can continue to bring you small engine lawn tractor content
Like this one. Have a great day. Don't get sunburned. We'll see you guys next time. I'm over some blowers
And there she sits slip the belt back on that tire just went flat immediately it drove back here
It runs it drives
Now let's figure out what to do with it. See you guys later
That's right
Here at mowers and blowers
We push them into the garage
And they come out
driving
Hey
I'm andy from jericho
See you guys next time on mowers and blowers
