9 Special Tribulations for Those with Spiritual Affinity – Inescapable Karmic Connections
Ladies and gentlemen, in the journey of life we sometimes notice extraordinary signs that
convince us we carry a special affinity with the Dharma, what folk traditions call a spiritual
destiny. This is neither mere pride nor a mental burden but a miraculous gift planted by heaven
and earth in past lives, intended to awaken us amid the clamor of existence.
Some believe that bearing this destiny must bring a serene, effortless life, like water flowing
gently, with a heart at peace. The reality is entirely different. The spiritual path has never
been strewn with roses or been easy. Along this journey we face countless severe trials,
enduring hardships that sometimes seem unbearable. Those with this destiny may suffer pressure from
relatives, entanglements in emotional relationships, confront heavy karmic obstacles,
or even endure soul-shattering crises without an outlet for confession. Each trial is both
adversity and a precious opportunity to look deeply inward, to understand ourselves,
and to awaken our true mind. Karmic connections are the invisible threads binding us to life's
currents, drawing us through every emotion, joy, anger, love, hate, pleasure, and suffering.
The nine tribulations below mark the milestones every one of us, touched by Dharma's destiny,
will pass through, whether we wish it or not, whether they are heavy or light. They are the
inevitable experiences that allow us to mature, become firmer, and ultimately return to our own
peaceful and free nature. 1. Tribulation of Initiation – The Light of Awakening
In a lifetime, the most remarkable moment may be the instant of awakening. For those with this
destiny, it can strike like a lightning bolt in clear skies or gently, like morning dew seeping
into dry earth. It may begin with a persistent, enigmatic dream, a sudden pang at hearing a sacred
verse or chant, or simply meeting a teacher or noble friend at a moment of personal crisis.
From that moment the secret door to the spiritual realm opens, and we realize the familiar world
holds mysteries far deeper than we imagined. Those with this destiny possess a sensitive heart
that trembles at the suffering of beings. One glimpse of hardship, a single loss, or even a
fleeting separation can pierce their soul. These emotions sow the seeds of a quest for life's
meaning, a yearning to understand birth and death, and a resolve to transform the inner world.
The beginning of this journey is seldom smooth. The newly awakened often feel lost among the crowd,
unsure of whom to confide in. They are labeled eccentric, unrealistic dreamers. The more they
seek truth, the more isolated and doubtful they become. This is the first great trial,
the internal struggle between the urge to awaken and the desire to live an ordinary life.
Questions like, who am I in this impermanent existence, and which path do I truly want to
follow, haunt their thoughts. Whether they choose to pursue or evade, the seed of awakening, once
sown, never dies. It quietly sprouts, urging them onward through unexpected twists and turns,
each step a beautiful journey towards self-understanding and deeper realization.
2. Family Tribulation, Bonds of Affection and Obligation
Just as the light of awakening shines, one often confronts trials at the heart of intimacy,
family. Many destined individuals endure misunderstanding, opposition, or even
reproach from loved ones, simply for choosing a different path. Family members may worry they are
abandoning reality in favor of unrealistic beliefs. Conflicts, arguments, and discord
become frequent, exerting immense pressure and shaking the practitioner between their ideals
and family duties. At times this tribulation grows heavier because of past debts of affection.
Parents may have sacrificed everything for us, siblings may have supported us through hardship,
or we may become caregivers for ailing relatives. Both directions demand our commitment. One urges
us to cast off burdens and walk lightly on the spiritual path, the other binds us with deep,
loving ties we cannot sever. The family tribulation is a profound lesson in harmonizing
dharma and daily life. To overcome it, we must cultivate patience, compassion, and deep empathy
for our loved ones. Rather than resist, we learn to speak gently, explain step by step, and show
that spiritual practice does not lead to indifference but, on the contrary, fosters greater
responsibility, love, and forgiveness. Gradually, family members come to understand that our path
is not selfish but can bring peace to the entire household. Thus, though arduous, the family
tribulation forges our capacity for love and wisdom, providing a solid foundation for further
progress on the spiritual path. 3. Tribulation of Romantic Attachment
Worldly Entanglements. Romantic attachment is the strangest and most powerful bond for those
with a spiritual destiny. Caught between the aspiration for inner liberation and the longing
for worldly love, our hearts are torn by ceaseless conflict. When affection arises, it's easy to
confuse personal desire with the purpose of practice, creating bindings that are hard to undo.
Whether it takes the form of romantic love, deep friendship, or devotion to a spiritual teacher,
once we succumb to desire, practitioners often fall into suffering and delusion.
Before this tribulation, the greatest lesson is to recognize the impermanent nature of all feelings
and to let go of clinging to people and things. Only when we understand that love is not possession
and that liberation does not require rejecting love can we fully engage in relationships without
entanglement or distress. This step is crucial to harmonize spirituality with ordinary affections,
leading us to a state of freedom free of attachment and regret.
Encounters of love seldom occur by chance. They are the miraculous arrangements of karmic ties
from past lives. Sometimes love appears as a blessing that awakens compassion and joyful
sacrifice. Yet all too often it becomes the greatest obstacle on the path to inner freedom.
Those with a spiritual destiny often possess an unusual magnetism, easily drawing others into
deep affection. But deep within, they harbor anxiety and fear of drowning too deeply in
attachment. They want both to love completely and to escape from it. This contradiction brings
anguish and self-doubt. Is love itself the enemy of enlightenment? The real issue lies not in love
itself, but in greed and clinging. The tribulation of romantic attachment is a profound lesson in
True peace does not come from rejecting love, but from loving mindfully,
cherishing without grasping, showing compassion without binding. Once we transcend this
tribulation, we realize that love, rightly understood, can become a driving force and a
gateway to deeper realization. Only by seeing love's true power can we attain inner freedom
and break free from entangling bonds, walking steadily on the long path of practice.
4. Tribulation of Fame and Gain – Swedish Traps
Fame and gain, two words both alluring and terrifying in human life. We all hunger for
recognition, success in wealth, status, or power. On the spiritual path, those with a destiny for
practice are especially vulnerable to these familiar snares. Many assume that once they
embark on the way, their minds will naturally become serene, free from worldly competitions.
Life, however, is never that simple. Practitioners may still carry debts of career or finance,
needing to work and hustle to make a living. At times, fame and wealth come more easily to them
because their special energy attracts success and attention. Yet behind each achievement lies
an invisible trial. The greater the fame and wealth, the higher the price. We can drown in
its sweetness and forget the original aim of practice. Gradually, our hearts become conflicted
and uneasy, knowing we've drifted from our ideals yet lacking the courage to turn back.
What was once a sacred destiny becomes an invisible burden, tormenting us with guilt
toward ourselves and our path. The tribulation of fame and gain reminds us of impermanence.
Money flows like water, reputation drifts like clouds, both come and go, impossible to hold
onto indefinitely. Only a peaceful heart, virtue, and enlightened wisdom are lasting treasures we
carry forever. If we use our achievements to do good, to help others and benefit the world,
then fame and gain cease to be obstacles and become useful means to perfect ourselves.
Conversely, if we chase after empty fame and gain, we become like moss drawn to a flame,
losing the most precious thing, inner peace. To overcome this tribulation,
we must remain mindful every moment, constantly reminding ourselves of our true values,
weighing right and wrong clearly, and keeping our hearts pure amid the world's temptations.
5. Tribulation of Suffering, Trials of Body and Mind
Along the spiritual path, having transcended past karma, we sometimes face challenges that
seem beyond our capacity to bear. Sudden illness, one disaster after another, or intense psychological
crises. Those with a spiritual destiny often endure phases in which every support seems gone,
falling into anxiety, depression, and a profound sense of loneliness amid a noisy world.
In those moments, it is easy to become bewildered and to question why,
having chosen the path of awakening and lived virtuously, we suffer even more than ordinary
people. In truth, suffering on the path of practice does not torment us in vain. It is
an opportunity to purify the old karmic debts we have carried through countless lifetimes.
As we dedicate ourselves to spiritual cultivation, those karmic results gradually
manifest so we can swiftly repay our debts and relinquish their burden.
Every moment spent facing physical pain or mental turmoil carries a profound lesson,
teaching us patience, compassion, and the reality of impermanence in this life.
To overcome the tribulation of body and mind, we must first cultivate compassion for ourselves.
We listen attentively to our bodies and acknowledge every rising negative emotion
without avoidance. We choose a suitable practice, be it meditation, reciting sutras,
chanting Buddha's name, or mindful breathing, to soothe the heart and heal deep wounds.
At the same time, we should not hesitate to share our struggles with a trusted teacher
or like-minded companions, finding timely encouragement and support.
This tribulation will ultimately show us that as long as we hold fast to faith,
every hardship can become the gateway to the deepest and most enduring peace and awakening.
6. Tribulation of the Ego, Transcending the Self to Mature
The ego, that small yet potent sense of I, is the greatest obstacle on the spiritual path.
Those with a spiritual destiny can sometimes fall into pride,
believing themselves special or uniquely destined for an exalted mission.
Conversely, they may sink into deep inferiority, feeling sinful or worthless, retreating into
isolation. Both extremes stem from an ego that has not been properly understood and transformed.
When the ego surges, we experience a profound inner conflict. On one hand, we crave enlightenment,
aspiring to purity and unconditional love. On the other, our minds are easily provoked.
Anger, jealousy, and resentment arise, or we feel wounded by others' judgments.
To transcend this tribulation, we must continuously observe and recognize thoughts
and behaviors born of greed, hatred, and delusion, then let them go.
Only when the ego is transformed can we live with an open heart,
neither arrogant nor self-deprecating, but humble, selfless, and boundlessly loving.
Then practice ceases to be an inner battle and becomes a joyful journey of freedom and peace.
The powerlessness we feel when unable to reconcile these conflicts can lead us to doubt our own worth
and the value of the path we have chosen. Do we truly possess a spiritual destiny,
or is it all an illusion? To overcome the ego's tribulation,
we need genuine humility. We must bravely look within to acknowledge our flaws and darkness
without hiding or self-condemnation. When we have the courage to face and
accept our imperfections, true transformation begins. At that moment, we genuinely mature,
no longer deceived by the ego, neither arrogantly self-important nor needlessly ashamed.
We learn to be humbly confident, at ease in the face of life's storms.
This is the authentic gateway to profound happiness and awakening we have always sought.
7. Tribulation of Spirituality and Reason, Harmonizing Heart and Mind
On the spiritual path, some believe they need only live by faith and intuition, casting aside
reason. Others rely too heavily on logic, denying anything mystical that science cannot yet explain.
In reality, those with a spiritual destiny often stand between these two extremes.
The tribulation of spirituality and reason teaches us how to harmonize and balance both.
This conflict becomes most apparent when we encounter various practices and traditions.
On one hand, our hearts are profoundly moved by miraculous phenomena, sensing invisible
vibrations from the cosmos that defy ordinary logic. On the other, reason urges constant doubt.
Is this real? Could it be an illusion or a product of the mind? This leaves us confused,
anxious, and sometimes even doubting ourselves and our chosen path.
Yet the Buddha's timeless instruction still resonates,
be a lamp unto yourself. In other words, use personal experience and inner wisdom to verify
the truth. When we practice sincerely and endure hardship while maintaining faith,
we gradually experience genuine peace, not mere theory. The key is to integrate intuitive
insight with the clarity of reason. Studying scriptures, learning from noble friends,
and observing life mindfully help us avoid both blind superstition and excessive skepticism.
The tribulation of spirituality and reason reminds us that reason does not diminish faith,
nor does spirituality negate the necessity of clarity. Together, they support one another,
creating the equilibrium needed on the path to awakening. When this balance is achieved,
our wisdom is truly firm, and we advance confidently on the spiritual journey without
fear of losing our way. 8. Tribulation of letting go,
the key to liberation. Letting go may sound gentle and simple, but in reality it is the
greatest and most difficult challenge in anyone's life. Letting go does not mean denial, evasion,
or irresponsibility. It means learning to free ourselves from attachments and clinging so that
our minds can become more liberated, at ease, and awakened. After overcoming so many trials
of affection, fame and gain, family, illness, and ego, those with a spiritual destiny finally
realize that the essence of true liberation lies in two words, letting go. What must we let go of
first? We begin by releasing clinging to our selfish ego and letting go of excessive expectations
about outcomes or other people. Then we let go of dualistic judgments, right and wrong,
self and other, winning and losing. We cannot force life always to follow our desires,
but we can learn to act skillfully, flexibly, and in accordance with circumstances when facing
adversity. In practice, letting go happens not only in great matters, but also in the most
ordinary situations. Faced with loss or disappointment, rather than resisting and
suffering, we accept them as inevitable parts of life. We calmly move through the pain to live
fully in the moments that follow. In doing so, we gain inner strength, develop deeper compassion for
others, and maintain serenity and lightness in our hearts. But letting go is a long journey,
not something completed in a day. It requires us to continuously release, thought by thought,
moment by moment. Each successful act of letting go lightens our mind, freeing us from invisible
bonds. This truly opens the door to awakening and to the genuine, lasting peace that has always been
our innate nature. 9. Tribulation of solitary journey, loneliness on the path to awakening.
On the path of practice, we sometimes feel as if we are walking alone through a vast life.
Even with many loved ones around, this loneliness is not simply the absence of companionship,
but a sense of being misunderstood and spiritually distant. Those with a spiritual
destiny find it increasingly difficult to share their most intimate experiences,
the subtle emotions and insights that transcend words. Unable to express them, we feel even more
isolated. The tribulation of solitary journey arises when we realize that no one can truly
accompany us to the very end of our inner path. Even our dearest loved ones may not fully
comprehend what we are going through. Even spiritual friends can only empathize to a
certain degree. In the end, each of us must walk the journey of awakening alone. For this reason,
loneliness becomes a silent, yet vital trial. Yet if we look more deeply, this solitude is
not negative. It is an invitation to turn inward and discover our truest companion,
our own serene, free, and awakened mind that has always been present.
When we learn to live with solitude without feeling unsteady, and to listen to silence
rather than fearing it, that very moment of walking alone becomes a source of immense strength.
It helps us uncover the profound beauty within the depths of our soul,
where there is already perfect peace and tranquility, no need to seek it outside.
The tribulation of solitary journey teaches us a precious lesson in self-reliance and
self-awareness. We come to see that however many companions we have, ultimately we are
responsible for our own awakening and liberation. Though the spiritual journey can be lonely at
times, if we embrace it and turn it into an opportunity for inner reflection, every step
becomes rich with meaning and filled with peace. Journey back to self. The nine tribulations are
initiation, family, affection, fame and gain, suffering, body and mind, for ego,
conflict between spirituality and reason, letting go, solitary journey.
Like nine chapters in the invisible book of awakening, each tribulation carries a profound
message, both a great challenge and an opportunity for self-perfection. Not everyone must experience
all nine in the same order, nor with the same intensity. Each person has their own story and
lessons, according to the karmic ties sown in the past. What matters most is our attitude toward each
trial. Do we have the patience, compassion and wisdom to overcome it? If we embrace these challenges
as precious opportunities, we will grow quickly and the path of practice will become rich with
meaning and joy. Along this journey, remember that you are never truly alone. Teachers and
fellow practitioners will appear at the right moments to help you through difficulties. Above
all, you possess the strength, wisdom and courage to move forward, for true awakening does not lie
outside but within the depths of your own mind. Amitabha Buddha
