The sun is relentless and luck has it we find an abandoned stable which saves the day. For us a house for the night, first sheltering us from the heat and then from the spring rains. The next day we have to get some groceries and first it seems like there is nothing around but we find a little town and visit the local food market to stock up. The market vendors really like us being there but we have some mind wanderings about what it takes to film people we just met. We cycle through the backcountry where we meet more lovely and open Uzbek people and see how the famous ‘somsas’, a meat filled bread, are being made. The roads are getting busier close to Samarkand and Eric falls ill. When we ask a family running a bar if we could pitch our tent on their land we are immediately invited in and put up in a room to rest. The next morning we leave as almost part of the family. What an incredible hospitable place!
Alright, we found something. It's a very nice mud brick building, let me show you.
I think it's the place where the shepherds go with their sheep and the goats.
Wow, pretty tight actually. So, here inside it's more cool than here under the roof.
So, we're getting in there, have a little rest up. Okay, getting inside here. Let me see,
maybe we can make a little bit more light. I don't know if you can see it here right now,
but it's so much cooler than outside. Nice thermal mask going on here.
Nice little house. Yeah, nice little house. Okay, let's have a nice rest up. Yeah.
Hello. Hi, we are now deciding what we want to do. It's about 30 kilometers to the next town
and we have to stock up with some food and some water and then we will decide if we stop for a
camp spot before or after. Do you have an idea? Yeah. We still have some oatmeal and some
pasta left, a little bit of vegetables, some fruits. But not too much breakfast. Yeah, not
too much. And it's, yeah. This place actually is great. Over there it's raining, there's thunder
in the sky over there. But also maybe stay here. We have, I think we have enough water,
so that's also a possibility. Yeah, do we have enough water? Because it's still 30 kilometers,
it's hot. Yeah, we have to be, well, just drink enough and...
Healthy steps.
We make very interesting meals these days. We have nothing left. Yesterday we made a
kind of a cucumber, warm cucumber soup with beans, pasta and tomato sauce.
It was actually quite delicious. You get really creative when you're out of food.
It's pretty good, these leftover things for the oatmeal.
Just like you said, with these peanuts, just like peanut butter through the oatmeal.
We just went to a small little town to get some groceries. And
I went to the market, the greens and vegetables market. They also sold some meat and spices.
Man, what's such a cool place. All the colors. The women are dressing very colorful here in
Uzbekistan. It was very nice. I was just walking around and I wanted to make some film shots, but
sometimes it's a little bit difficult to just stick a camera in someone's face, you know.
It's a challenge to get people really natural on camera and you don't want to
make them feel ashamed or something like that, you know.
But I was there and I was walking around. I just started filming a little bit.
This is kind of the Uzbekistan that you will only see if you do something like a bike tour or maybe
you walk. The town is very industrial. It's very gray and boring, but they have a very
cool market in the center of town. You're really welcomed like a friend. So it was a very cool
experience. And it's also kind of the fun of filming all this, you know. Sometimes this can
also be a little bit exhausting, because if you're tired and there's something happening,
something cool, you just have to get your camera, right. But it's also a way to connect.
So if you're going to a market like this, for example, you're not gonna film someone if you
don't connect first. So it's very nice that you have a little chat with the locals and have some
Yeah, Eric doesn't really feel too well. So we saw a kind of a place where we could drink some chai
and we're kind of optimistic. And we were looking at it and we
saying to each other that might be a good place to sleep for tonight. So we just went to this
family here and asked them can we maybe pitch our tent here. And they arranged this lovely
room for us immediately without asking. It was all fine. We have a pretty funny room.
So I feel a little bit better today and we want to go to Samarkand. We've just been asked to sleep
here one more night. These people are so immensely friendly. We just knocked at the door yesterday
and now we are almost part of the family. That's just wonderful. We just had breakfast. They gave
us some rice porridge and some bread. So that's some good fuel for the day. And we're gonna head
out and we're gonna see if we can get to Samarkand today. Here in Uzbekistan every third night you
have to register. So we're now in a little town. There's a hotel and we need to sleep there. Maybe
it's five star, maybe it's one star, we don't know. But we have to get the registration.
The spring rains have begun here and we're now in this small restaurant. We're just
shelter. What's the what's the word? Shelter. Shelter, yes. We need to shelter from the rain
or we needed to shelter from the rain. So we're here now drinking a nice beer, having wonderful nuts.
That sounds strange. We're having some some almonds, salted almonds. And from here we're
gonna head out to the hotels. Approximately one kilometer down the road here. And then we're
gonna see. We're gonna hassle Smiley Stern this time. Because she's gonna hassle and get us a
nice room. That was a very good story. Hey guys, great that you made it to the end of the video.
