Shiretoko, a 65-kilometer-long peninsula in the Ohotsugu Sea.
In 2005, a part of the peninsula, as well as the surrounding sea, was registered as a World Heritage Site.
Many marine creatures gather in this rich sea known as the World Heritage Site.
What kind of creatures are they, and why do they come to Shiretoko?
The port town of Laos is on the east side of the peninsula.
From here, there are sightseeing boats like every day.
We met some rare dolphins soon after we set sail.
The dolphins are about 2 meters in length and can swim very fast.
They are like playing dolphins, swimming side by side with the boat.
And then...
In the sea of Laos, they sometimes come across sharks.
This one is sitting next to a 6-meter-tall giant.
It seems like it's observing the boat.
But it's not just one.
In many cases, they come in multiples.
Sharks are high-sociability creatures that live in a flock centered around their mothers.
They are also known for their high intelligence and strategic hunting while cooperating with their families.
However, it's extremely rare for them to attack humans.
They must have come to observe humans out of curiosity.
The large triangular dorsal fin is characteristic of a grown male.
It looks intimidating, but sometimes it can even attack whales.
There are no enemies on Earth.
The king of the sea comes in a flock right next to the city of Laos.
I observe sharks here and there.
Twice this month, in August.
11 times in July.
13 times in June.
And a few times in May.
You don't see sharks like this in Japan, do you?
But why do sharks appear in the sea of Japan, and in places so close to land?
We found one of the reasons in the sea at night.
When we fixed the camera in the water,
in just one minute, the screen looked like a fierce storm.
These are all animal planktons.
They are important creatures in the food chain.
Many animals, including sharks, come here because of the overwhelming number of these animal planktons.
So why do so many of them occur in Shiretoko?
Every winter, the ice floes come to Shiretoko.
In the first place, the ice floes are frozen in the Amur River in Russia.
These ice floes are pushed by the seasonal wind to the south.
They travel 1,000 kilometers to finally reach the Shiretoko Peninsula.
And the Amur River is rich in nutrients for the ice floes.
If you look from the ground, you can see the white ice floes.
If you look under the ice floes, you can see some greenery.
This is the sign of the Amur River's nutrients.
Plant planktons called ice algae are tightly enclosed in the ice floes.
In spring, when the ice melts, these plant planktons are released at once.
And the animal planktons that eat them explode.
This time, many fish come to eat these animal planktons, such as salmon and marbled rockfish.
In addition, dolphins and whales come after these fish.
And finally, they bring them to the sea to the top of the food chain.
It can be said that the accumulation of so many animals is due to the nutrients contained in the ice floes.
It is thought that the sea of Shiretoko would not be so rich without the ice floes coming from the far north.
Now, there is someone who continues to transmit the charm of Shiretoko in the video.
Mr. Takashi Kawabata.
Good morning.
I'm Mr. Kawabata from the world.
It's been a long time since I've been to the sea.
This sea is my sea.
Now, let me show you some of the amazing images of Shiretoko that Mr. Kawabata from the world took in my sea.
First, the synchro of Shiretoko.
This is a miraculous shot of a flock of sharks with dorsal fins on each side of the sea.
This is a shark that acts as a spy hop.
It is said that it sticks out its upper body from the water surface to spy on the surroundings.
And then...
It came upside down.
What?
It's the opposite of a spy hop.
It's upside down.
I don't know what it's for, but it's a rare sight in the world.
And then...
I wanted to take a shot of the shark jumping.
Did you take it?
Yes, I did.
You can see it in the captain's commentary.
What's going on today?
It's coming!
I can shoot it!
Haruko, are you okay?
What's going on?
I did it!
I've never seen anything like this in Japan.
For me, this sea is like a calendar.
Every day is like a calendar.
I wonder what's going to happen today.
Tomorrow is like a calendar.
I wonder what's going to happen tomorrow.
I'm really looking forward to it.
This sea is the best in the world.
There's no other sea like this.
The best season to encounter sharks is from mid-April to mid-July.
Basically, sharks are cautious, but they are also curious and playful.
Sometimes they come right next to the ship.
In the underwater video taken by the crew,
they showed us a cool side of a huge shark that comes to peek at the camera.
Sharks are highly intelligent, so they have many mysteries.
They often don't know how to move, reproduce, or communicate.
There may be more surprising discoveries about the sharks in the future.
