Do you know the difference between Western and Chinese astrology?
Why do each have such distinct symbolism and methodologies?
Recently, in the Mythological Zodiac series, we explored the depths of astrology that shaped
humanity's understanding of the cosmos. We connected the zodiac signs to deities in
ancient stories, uncovering the fascination with the interaction between the sky and the earth.
These tales seek to understand and interpret the celestial cycles,
reflecting the complex relationships between the stars and human destiny.
In this video, we will compare these two remarkable astrological systems.
We will explore their origins, their methods of calculation, and their interpretations,
aiming to shed light on the unique features that make them stand out in the vast landscape
of human knowledge. To understand Western astrology,
we need to look at its astronomical foundation. The system is linked to the sun's movement
through the zodiac constellations throughout the year. The earth follows a path around the sun
called the ecliptic, which is divided into 12 sections, each associated with a different
constellation. Each sign is determined by the position of the sun at the time of birth.
The 12 signs, from Aries to Pisces, represent archetypes that reflect different personality
traits. In addition to the sun, Western astrology also takes into account the moon and the planets.
Each celestial body, in different positions at the time of birth, contributes to a unique birth
chart, detailing the influences on a person's life. The signs are divided into four elements,
fire, earth, air, and water. And three modalities. Cardinal, fixed, and mutable.
For example, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are fire signs, known for their energy, while Taurus,
Virgo, and Capricorn, being earth signs, are more stable and practical.
This system is highly structured and reflects the study of the universe's cycles.
Now that we understand the Western system, let's turn our attention to the East.
Here, we find a completely different astrological system that uses lunar cycles and a unique set of
mythical animals. We leave behind the solar constellations and dive into a world where
animals and elements reign. The Chinese zodiac is based on a 12-year cycle, each year represented
by an animal. Unlike Western astrology, where the sign is determined by the month of birth,
in the Chinese system, it is the year that defines your animal, with the Chinese new
year occurring on different dates between January and February. The 12 animals include the rat,
ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
Each of these animals has traits that influence the destiny and personality of those born in
their year. The order of the animals was determined by a popular legend known as the Great Race,
where the Jade Emperor challenged the animals to cross a river. The cleverness of the rat
made it the first, while the tiger and other animals followed in their respective positions.
In addition to the animals, the Chinese zodiac incorporates the five elements,
wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Each element is combined with an animal,
creating 60-year cycles with specific variations for each combination.
This influences aspects such as health, fortune, and relationships.
Although Western and Chinese astrology seem worlds apart, they share a common purpose,
helping us understand our place in the universe. Both systems were shaped by ancient civilizations
observing the heavens, the Greeks and Babylonians looking to the sun and stars,
the Chinese tracing the moon and cycles of time. Western astrology focuses on individuality,
planetary influence, and psychological archetypes, a mirror of the Greco-Roman
interest in character, fate, and inner journey. Chinese astrology, rooted in harmony, balance,
and the rhythm of nature, highlights interconnection, destiny, and the influence
of time on collective cycles. While one sees the person as a singular star in orbit,
the other sees them as a thread in a vast cosmic tapestry.
Neither is better or worse, just different ways of reading the same sky.
Helping us understand more about ourselves and the world around us.
Western astrology, with its connection to the sun and planets, and the Chinese zodiac,
with its cycles of animals and elements, are testaments to humanity's quest for meaning.
