Hi everyone, welcome back to my home studio.
So this is day 9 on my quarantine distraction videos that I've been making since I've been
off school and missing my students.
This video is a continuation of the one that I posted most recently.
So the one that I posted most recently was about glaze combinations and glaze application.
This video shows the result of the fired pieces.
So I'll be unloading the kiln and I'll show you results of that.
So hopefully you find some of the outcomes kind of fun.
You'll see some of my successes and mistakes.
So you know, even though I've done this thousands and thousands of times, I still screw up and
make mistakes sometimes.
So it's good to see those and learn from those as well.
So shoot me any questions that you might have in the comments below or if you have any suggestions
of things you'd like for me to cover.
I do have a little running list of things that I'm going to cover in the days ahead.
So I hope you enjoy and good luck, stay well and keep potting.
Okay so I've got a little follow up here to the video where I glazed everything.
So I've got some glaze results.
I've already taken some things out of the kiln.
You can see these little discs back here, these are the patties that I fire on.
I always fire on a patty because if we have a glaze run and it goes past the foot and
it goes to stick, I would rather have it on a waste patty than have it on the shelf.
I have videos on how I teach my students how to make patties as well.
So this is a result of Texas Two Step.
It's pretty fun.
I think I need to try some other colors to kind of get some diversity there.
This looks like this was the Seamest.
There's Marshmallow.
This looks like Marshmallow with less.
So this is probably two or three coats of Marshmallow and maybe one or two coats there.
The blue is Blue Moon and you can see where it's a little heavier right in the very base
where it kind of pools, I get more spotting.
It's a really fun glaze family to try out.
Some more of these.
I'll go ahead and unload these and I'll show you how those look after I put them out on
the table.
This is, let's see, that's the combination of Black with Light Chino, and this is Coyote
Black, Coyote Light Chino.
And then on the rim, I believe I used Archie's Base.
I'll double check that, but I'll put it on the table and I'll let you know.
I'm pretty sure that's what I did.
I really like the way that came out.
Black underneath things that are in the Chino family are really quite lovely.
There's another Texas Two Step.
And let's see, what do we have here?
This is the Baby Blue Satin.
That's pretty.
With Blue Purple on the rim.
Nice.
That one looks like it's stuck a little bit, let's see.
That's just, that's what I refer to as a vapor glaze.
You can see that you get a little glaze ring on there.
The glaze just puts off a little bit of vapor that will actually kind of create a little
bit of a seal or a sheen.
Okay, this is one of my all-time favorite combos.
Love the Black with Desert Sage over it.
So it has a similar quality to that, the Light Chino one.
This one has Gun Metal on the rim as well.
Another Light Chino over Black.
And that one, it did vapor glaze a little bit, but I have a little tiny chunk I'm going
to have to use my grinder and I'll get that off.
You can see it just kind of pooled down there just long enough to touch.
Another Texas Two-Step here.
I'll take these out and I'll come back.
Okay, so I'm down to the next layer and I just wanted to pull out a couple of these
first.
This is Steel Gray Chino with Chino.
Looks like I had a little bit of stickage right on the underneath side of the foot,
but I'll be able to knock that off and grind if I have anything sharp.
This one, unfortunately, I did have a little speck.
It looks like, let's see, it just ran right there and it stuck to the patty, so I am going
to have to use the grinder on this to take care of that.
This has a really cool matte, kind of a crystal-formed kind of texture.
It did have some cool crystal formation.
I put it on a slow-cool program because I wanted to see if I could get some more crystal
formation, and I did.
I really like it on just a fast program, too, but this is really quite lovely.
Okay, so this one's Cobalt and I did Blue Purple on the Rim.
Let's see.
Good.
So that one was also just Vapor Glaze, nothing really stuck there.
I will always go over the bottom of the foot, though, with something to grind off any maybe
groggy kind of texture.
I'll always do that.
This one came out nice, though.
And let's see, what else do we have?
Here's a...
Oh, I had it stick.
Okay, so this was the Lapis and the Robin's Egg.
I really like this combination, but I definitely must have taken down the Robin's Egg too far
because you can see it ran badly there.
So this one will be a little tricky to break off, which I bet that means that my bowls
might have...
Yep, there we go.
I got a stuck spot right there.
Okay, so that one's not terrible.
I can easily grind that, but I just brought the Robin's Egg down too far.
I know that Robin's Egg over the Lapis is runny, and I was just a little too aggressive
with it.
Let's see what my other one looks like.
Ooh, that one's bad.
That one.
This one might be a goner because this one definitely is all the way around.
Darn it.
Well, live and learn on that one.
It's been a while since I've done that combo.
I just should have done the Robin's Egg up a lot higher than I actually did.
I can show you another bowl that I didn't put in this load that I've done before that
did work really well, but it's a beautiful color.
Just unfortunately ran.
Oh, yeah.
Black Desert Sage.
Ooh, I love it.
It just might be my new favorite mug.
Yes.
Coffee in that tomorrow.
And then, yeah, more Desert Sage in black.
Okay, I'm going to go ahead and continue to unload, and I'll show you these in a minute.
I'm pretty pleased with the way that most of these came out.
I have a few here I need to do some grinding.
I made these bowls mostly for the local MT Bowls event that we have.
Unfortunately, it's scheduled in a couple of weeks, and it is now canceled due to the
coronavirus, but I'm sure they'll be put to good use in the future.
So this one right here, again, this is Coyote Cobalt with Blue Purple on the rim.
Now you can see that Cobalt does show texture, but pretty good when you have a heavy texture.
The Blue Purple has a nice layering and a nice drippy kind of effect.
Remember when I first did this, it was not drippy.
It just tends to be runny and drips in the kiln.
Remember, this is the Coyote Two-Step Glazes, and Licorice was the base coat for all of these.
Okay, so Licorice is the blackish color that's underneath.
And then on top, I put multiple coats of the Marshmallow, which is the white,
the Blue Moon, which is the blue, and then on some of them, like this one in the middle,
you can see the color that's a little bit teal-ish.
That's the seamless color.
The next series, this was my Squared Bowls.
This was the Steel Gray Chino, done two-thirds first, and then Chino over the top of that.
I love this surface, if you can kind of see that.
We really got some nice crystal formation.
I'm not too sure if that's coming in focused for you or not, but gosh, I love that surface.
There we go. It's just so, so pretty.
Okay, so those came out pretty good.
I did have a little bit of stickage on a couple of the feet, where it maybe dripped just a little bit, or even flaked.
I'll have to fix that on the grinder.
Then I have Baby Blue Satin and Blue Purple on the rim.
Again, that Blue Purple was not running when I first put it on, but it runs in the kiln.
I love the Archie's Base series of coyotes, which it's like Blue Purple, Gunmetal, Archie's Base, and there's a fourth one that I have that is not coming to me right now.
I like those for rims, which are things that are kind of pretty.
Okay, next, this was the split rim bull when I did a squared split rim bull in the video.
So this is Light Chino over Black, and I love the way that mug came out.
I think that was really pretty. I like that.
And then Gunmetal on the rim.
So it would have been probably consistent all the way up, but because I dipped it in the Gunmetal,
you get a little bit of this runny, runny stuff happening here, and it is just a lovely combo.
Then this one. This one is probably my favorite combination.
Black with Desert Sage over the top.
So it's very similar to the Light Chino.
Gunmetal also on the rim of this one.
Now, the one thing that I encourage people to experiment with, if you have not,
experiment with Black underneath any of the Chino family,
and you get some really cool, cool results sometimes.
And then this one. This is the Lapis, the Coyote Lapis.
And you can see Lapis there on the bottom.
It's a very purplish blue.
And it has the...this is Laguna.
This is not Coyote. This is Laguna Robin's Egg,
which I think is just an outstanding glaze. I think it's so pretty.
However, it can be runny.
So you can see this one really ran.
It stopped in most places.
It stuck a little bit right there.
Oops, sorry. Stuck a little bit right there.
I'll have to fix that with the grinder.
I can show you that. I'll do another video on how to grind.
This one stuck, unfortunately, quite badly.
I don't know if I'll be able to salvage that one.
This one stuck pretty bad.
We'll see if I'll be able to salvage that.
Again, that's Lapis with Robin's Egg over the top.
This is really...this is a bowl that inspired that combination.
But this one had no problems.
Now, I really should have paid attention.
I don't know how far down I dipped the Robin's Egg.
Maybe I only dipped it to this angle.
That is very possible. And maybe it ran the rest of the way.
So I definitely went too far on these.
I should have kept it more like this
so I had a little bit more of the Lapis
that just showed at the bottom.
So, I hope you enjoyed that little bit of a glaze demo
to kind of help inspire some of your experimentation with glazes.
I think just experimenting with glazes
is one of the funnest things you can do
as opposed to using them straight out of the jar.
So, good luck. Keep potting. Stay healthy.
And keep learning.
