The Arctic Ocean is one of the toughest working environments on the planet, with only the best equipment capable of handling the arduous conditions. The Elling Carlsen is a prime example. Its 15-metre hull is loaded with cutting-edge technology and the vessel boasts an impressive 2,000 horsepower, making it the pride of the Svalbard archipelago.
We have no one else to help us. We have coast guards who are in every 14th day.
Sysselmann's service vessel is here for six months in the most busy season.
So when something happens up here in the middle of winter, late autumn or early spring,
it's only this boat that can move out quickly and assist.
My name is Kjetil Bråten. I'm the harbour chief, or harbour master, as it's called in English,
in Langebyen harbour, and I'm responsible for the operation and traffic management of this harbour.
This boat is designed to withstand the challenging weather conditions.
We have winter snow up here. It's completely dark for two and a half, three months.
We have ice in the water here.
So everything is designed to withstand cold and bad weather.
This boat is capable of going at around 43 knots, which is relatively fast on such a large boat.
It has two Scania 16-litre V8 diesels at 1000 horsepower each.
That was the biggest we were able to find, which at the same time was light
and had the ability to service each cylinder if something went wrong, without having to dismantle the entire engine.
The reason we chose Scania, and we specified this in our requirements when we asked for a new boat,
is that Scania is an engine with a long tradition in Norway and up here.
There are mechanics who understand and can handle it.
At the same time, Scania was built in such a way that we can provide service
and maintain each cylinder without having to dismantle the entire engine.
The boat is designed for oil weather, for emergency drag.
We can drag 6.2 tonnes.
We have a fire cannon on board to fight fire.
We have also equipped the boat with the possibility of patient transport
and of course rescue, which is part of a search and rescue operation.
When it comes to the interior of the boat, we have focused on
having a good working environment for both the firemen and the boat drivers.
That is why the steering cabin is dampened so much that it is much quieter in there
when we drive 35 knots than it is out on deck here now.
