On my solo trip to Vietnam, I ventured out and tried many dishes.
Some good.
So good.
This one I really like.
And some bad.
This is so tangy.
So today I'll be rating some dishes I had on my Vietnam trip as a vegetarian.
How much?
Two thousand.
Twenty thousand?
First dish I'm trying out is at Hoi An Ancient Market.
A street full of lights, lanterns and...
Just kidding.
I am not trying these.
So what we can see here right now is called Banh Trang Nhung.
What it basically looks like is rice flour, very flimsy soya chops,
I'm guessing, and a couple of other vegetables and a multiple layer of sauces.
A popular street food in Vietnam,
Banh Trang Nhung is originally eaten with pork meat and scrambled egg.
Really small types of eggs, very different kinds that I've never seen before.
Okay, let's taste this.
It's like Frankie.
I actually like this dish, even though the filling tasted a lot like egg.
Egg? No. No egg and veg.
So I rate this a 7 on 10.
Sauces were good, it was crunchy, overall a good snack.
Chalo, yeh experience phir bhi theek tha.
But there were days that I was struggling to find veg food.
You'll see why.
My next spot is in French Colony, Bana Hills, where I made a pit stop for lunch.
As a French Colony, of course there's a lot of French food, Vietnamese food,
but as a vegetarian, I didn't get a lot of options.
That's my meal.
Guys, I struggled here.
Buffet mein I only saw non-veg options like fish head, pig chops and beef soup.
And I ended up eating noodles with fries.
A weird combination, which I didn't mind eating.
Which is not a bad combination at all.
But due to lack of options for a good hearty meal, I rate this experience a 3 on 10.
Okay, dessert time.
Try this dessert, which I saw a lot in the Vietnamese streets back in Hoi An.
Is dessert ko kahte hain chai.
It is a traditional sweet soup which includes jellies, coconut milk,
topped with chia seeds and other condiments.
Forget vegetarian, this is kind of vegan almost,
barring the jelly, if the jelly is vegetarian.
So I'm gonna taste and see what it feels like.
Honest bit, as a food content creator, I'm conditioned to give only good reactions.
Interesting.
This is a lot like our kheer back home.
The jelly is a little flavoured.
This dish was just okay.
Maybe the concoction wasn't right.
I might have mixed too much of coconut milk.
So it was a little too sweet.
And that's why I rate this a 5 on 10.
Also, mine had egg, which I found out later.
So always ask if there is any egg in your dessert.
Moving on.
Vietnam, however, wasn't all struggle.
There were days I got very lucky with veg food.
I'm at An Nien Garden at Hoi City.
And it has all vegetarian cuisine.
Very rare to find in Vietnam, but well, I managed to find one.
This has got to be my favourite place in Vietnam for food so far.
This restaurant had dishes beyond paneer, aloo and mushroom.
I mean, they made a yummy dish with bamboo shoot.
So good.
Pineapple rice, which was normal rice sabzi with a pineapple tinge.
So good.
And finally, the best dish so far, which was a unique kind of spring roll,
but with transparent and thin rice paper.
The dish was mind-blowing.
The chef made really boring vegetables taste so good.
It's so good.
I love it.
The right amount of sauce and flavour, plus the rice paper was an amazing touch.
Rate this dish a 10 on 10.
Okay, moving on to the last dish of the video.
This dish is called The Purple Lady.
It's specific to the city of Hoi because purple is a very auspicious colour in Hoi.
So let's taste and see if it's as auspicious.
Yeah, I clearly did not like it, so I kept my review to myself.
The dish actually was like a Vietnamese version of gulab jamun,
but dipped in spicy sauce.
Solely because of the spicy sauce it was dipped in, I didn't like it.
That's why I rate this dish a 3 on 10.
And that's all.
That was my experience as a vegetarian in Vietnam.
I hope you enjoyed watching this episode as much as I enjoyed eating the food.
Do tell me in the comments below which one of these foods are your favourite.
Until then, this is me, Neha Namdyar, signing off.
