Of course one of the underlying themes of this one is that the winner gets Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, that highly anticipated first U.S. Open meeting.
Letting Roger know early on to stay away from the forehand.
It was pretty funny the other evening when Roger posted one of those virtual images of Del Potro hitting a forehand with a big Thor hammer on the end of it and of course it went viral.
At the moment, it's the ability to hit those kind of shots that makes him so good.
Look at the spin that he's imparted on that.
The waving that Wilson warned early on.
15-0.
30-0.
I think we might see a lot of aces in this match with these two serving.
When did he decide to go to Del Potro's forehand? He got away with it on that occasion.
There wasn't particularly anything special from Roger.
That's two in the service game for Federer. Aces that is.
Love 15.
Remembering the last Federer match against Philip Polschreiber two days ago when Roger had the medical timeout at the end of the second set.
Said afterwards, it was no big deal.
Just had a spot on his, first he said lower back because he was trying not to say what he really meant.
He said, oh my quad area. Okay, it was his glute.
And just needed to get a little attention and wanted to go off court for some privacy to have that done.
Those of us naturally curious about form and fitness will watch and see Roger's movement tonight. So far, so good.
127.
15-30.
Del Potro's arousal level is very consistent.
I think that enables him to play well for long periods of time.
Doesn't get too emotionally high, doesn't get down on himself.
Right, the steps, the serve motion, the shot, everything is graceful for a man as big as he is.
He moves really well. For me, he's right up there with the likes of a Burdick, Marin Cilic when it comes to movement.
Graceful there.
Just graceful.
String together.
First serve goes in, he's so dangerous when he gets to use the forehand.
Similar sort of scenario.
Game, Del Potro.
Service hold.
Miles an hour that was.
14-30.
Good defense by Del Potro to get that one out of his face and back over the net for the first time.
Getting further.
Fights to hold serve.
Break point saved, service held.
In a five and a half minute game for Juan Martin Del Potro.
One apiece, second set.
Serve it out to win the first set in 41 minutes.
Just about 10 o'clock at night here in New York City on a Wednesday.
Love lifting.
Love birdie.
Del Potro saved the break point earlier in this second set.
Two more points on Juan Martin's second serve.
And Juan Martin is.
Federer does that better than anyone.
The ability to change the hearts of the contact points.
Such thin contact for that backhand.
Staying so low.
So a triple break point for Roger Federer.
He's not going to miss out on this.
Nice big target.
Plenio Federer dip.
Great camera angle here.
From the Swiss Federer.
30-11.
No panic here. Picks a spot.
Anything you can do.
30-15.
Great serve.
30-15.
U.S. Open quarter.
40-30.
Del Potro did so well to get back on the point again.
Neutralizing a huge first serve.
First time receiving it.
Forehand.
Net misses.
Game, Del Potro.
First game of the third set.
Samson points one at net.
Early opportunity in this set.
For Del Potro.
A break point.
So a service break for Juan Martin.
Del Potro on a Federer double fault.
Stadium 10-30.
New York Wednesday.
Third set.
Fifth game.
Mr. Federer shouting the call.
Right serve. Ball is called in.
Roger Federer to ask for a chase review on Del Potro's serve.
He's had a good eye tonight.
When he's asked for a challenge.
By a whisker though.
30-15.
Moving to the ball.
40-15.
This is too central.
Del Potro.
All the time in the world.
40-30.
First double fault of the match for Del Potro.
One of his first serves of the match.
Net misses.
Del Potro.
Good serve.
He's up 4-1 in the third.
30-0.
He's so good at neutralizing the big serve.
Chip return of his.
Ask Andy Roddick how annoying it was.
Chance for Federer to break.
30-40.

Federer.
Now the serve comes to this side of the net.
Lovely shape on that forehand.
Occasion wisely making sure
that the approach was directed to the backhand, Luke.
Right center service line.
Boulders called in.
Chase review.
Del Potro's pretty sure it's out.
He'll be correct.
Pretty sure of it.
He's not going to back down with it.
Played seven points in this tiebreak.
Had four mini-breaks.
1-26.
And the speedometer.
Is it Del Potro challenging Nicole?
Forgive the line judge for being late with the call,
but he was ducking to keep from taking that one in the face.
Chase review. Shows the ball out.
For once, it's the Del Potro forehand.
That's misfiring him.
Just letting him down here.
For the set.
Del Potro got that in.
Is the Federer challenging Nicole left baseline?
Boulders called in.
Chase review.
Will show the ball good.
Yeah, Del Potro is saying to me,
don't rot off my forehand just yet.
6-5.
And now two serves to Del Potro.
Big match, players.
Let's not forget, Del Potro saved match points against team.
And knows the pressure very well.
Thank you.
7-6.
Federer.
So a third set point.
7-0.
8-7.
Federer.
Opportunities to close the set out.
Not converted.
Playing with fire a little bit.
9-8.
Del Potro.
Heavy artillery.
Yes, it's that tense.
Winner of this one gets Rafael Nadal in the U.S. Open semifinals.
15-0.
30-0.
40-0.
Game, Del Potro.
Two games all.
15-0.
15-30.
15-40.
30-40.

Old faithful.
Coming back.
Advantage, Del Potro.
So another great point for Del Potro.
Federer saved two great points.
Team Del Potro with a two sets to one lead on Roger Federer.
And he's up a break in the fourth.

30-0.
40-0.
For the match.
15-0.
Power and depth.
Thank you.
Federer to near a service break.
Where is his U.S. Open about to end?
