Oh, hello! We're thinking about maps today. That's why I'm looking at my phone.
I've got a map of Paris on it. I want to go on holiday there. Take a look at it.
The map shows the museums in the centre of the city and the river. Maps are very helpful.
Let's find out about them.
There are different ways we can look at maps.
There are paper maps, maps on phones and maps outside train stations and bus stations.
Maps can tell us different things about a place.
Street maps show the roads in towns and cities.
They also show places of interest such as museums, monuments and parks.
Political maps show us the borders between countries or the borders between different parts of the same country.
Physical maps show us where the rivers, lakes and mountains are in an area.
Maps use pictures called symbols. Symbols represent real things.
On a physical map, the symbol for a mountain like Mount Rainier in the USA is a triangle.
In real life, it looks like this.
This is the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
On a street map, it looks like this.
Right, I've got two questions for you about maps.
This is a map of Europe.
Is it a street map, a political map or a physical map?
That's right, it's a political map.
It shows the borders between countries.
What does a triangle symbol represent on a physical map?
Is it a mountain or a lake?
That's right, it shows a mountain.
That's Mount Fuji in Japan.
Hmm, maybe I should go there for my holiday.
See you next time. Bye!
