Once upon a time, in the heart of a jungle, there lived an elephant called Filu.
Filu loved to talk. He had big ears, but he rarely used them to listen.
Every day, Filu told stories about the things he had seen. He talked about rainbows, baby monkeys,
and all the little wonders of the jungle. His stories were always exciting, and the animals
loved to listen. But there was one problem. He never stopped talking long enough to listen.
One morning, Filu saw a group of monkeys whispering and giggling up in the trees.
What are you all laughing about? Filu asked. Before they could answer, he smiled. Oh,
it reminds me of the time I slipped in the mud and landed with a big splash.
Everyone laughed so hard. The monkeys paused but didn't say anything.
They just smiled politely as Filu kept talking. Filu never learned what the monkeys were actually
giggling about, and continued walking past them. Later, Filu met a parrot who was flapping her
wings excitedly. What's going on, parrot? he asked. The parrot opened her beak to speak,
but before she could, Filu said, Oh, this reminds me of when I saw a little turtle
trying to dance in the rain. It was the cutest thing ever. The parrot blinked,
but stayed quiet as Filu continued his story. That evening, as Filu walked to the river,
he noticed a tiny mouse sitting alone on a rock, looking sad. What's wrong, little one?
Filu asked. The mouse opened his mouth to answer, but before he could, Filu smiled and said, Oh,
this reminds me of when I lost my way to the jungle. I felt so small, just like you must feel
right now. Filu kept talking, but something felt different this time. The little mouse wasn't
laughing. He wasn't smiling. He just looked even sadder. Filu stopped talking for a moment.
He looked at the mouse and realized something. I don't even know what the monkeys were laughing
about, or what the parrot was excited about, or even why this mouse is sad.
For the first time, Filu stayed quiet. He wanted to listen. The mouse hesitated, then spoke.
I lost my home today, he said softly. A big storm washed it away, and now I don't know where to go.
Filu's heart squeezed. He had been so busy telling his own stories that
he had never noticed when others had stories of their own.
I can help you, Filu said gently. Come with me. The little mouse climbed onto Filu's back,
and together they searched for a new home. As they walked, Filu listened, really listened,
as the mouse told him about his favorite spots in the jungle, the games he played with his friends,
and how scared he had been when the storm came. By the time they found a cozy burrow,
the mouse was smiling again. From that day on, Filu still loved telling stories,
but he also learned to listen. And he realized that sometimes,
listening was the most powerful thing he could do.
