So close. Humanity's first true home in
space is nearly ready for launch. The
Haven 1 module from Vast is redefining
space living with a stunning upgraded
interior and bold new vision for life
beyond Earth. How impressive is it and
how soon will it fly? Let's find out in
today's episode of Great SpaceX. The
remaining operational lifespan of the
International Space Station is quickly
approaching its end. That timeline could
become even shorter due to proposed
budget cuts and the unexpected departure
of Russia from the program. In response,
commercial space stations are being
proposed as the next step in maintaining
the United States's presence and
competitiveness in low Earth orbit.
Among these, the vast space station
stands out, not only because of its
ambitious schedule, but also due to its
bold and innovative interior design.
Previously, we reported on astronaut
Chris Hatfield's visit and his hands-on
experience with key components of the
vast space station module. Since then,
the company has reached an agreement to
test station hardware at NASA
facilities. This collaboration laid the
foundation for a series of new
partnerships that reflect strong
industry interest in VAST's vision. VAST
has also partnered with the Center for
the Advancement of Science in Space,
also known as CASS, to support
scientific research through the ISS
National Laboratory. This cooperation
will help prepare the company for future
private astronaut missions, commonly
referred to as PAMS. These steps show
Vast's growing presence in the space
ecosystem and its commitment to enabling
research in orbit. Shortly after these
developments, Vast unveiled the Haven 1
experience, where a full-scale model of
the Haven 1 module was presented to the
public. Former NASA astronaut and
current Vast lead astronaut Andrew Fol
guided the reveal. During the 40th
annual space symposium in early April,
NASA acting administrator Janet Pro and
other NASA officials had the opportunity
to walk through and examine the mockup.
The physical model offered a far more
immersive understanding of the design
than earlier 3D renders. The module's
interior is stunningly modern and
spacious. A primarily white color
palette creates a sense of openness,
while wood patterned finishes introduces
a warmer, more inviting feel. Most
notably, the design features modular
systems that are cleverly integrated
into the walls. These systems can be
tucked away when not in use, maintaining
a sleek and uncluttered appearance. The
demonstration also allows viewers to get
a sense of scale, helping them imagine
what life inside Haven 1 might actually
feel like. This transition from
conceptual designs to a full-scale model
marks a major milestone for Vast. It
underscores the company's progress and
seriousness in building its commercial
space station. Meanwhile, real systems
are already being developed inside the
flight module, currently undergoing
testing at the Mojave test site. With
this momentum, we can hope to see the
final product in the near future. In
addition to the interior, VAST has
continued making advancements in other
critical systems. One standout feature
is the station's domed window.
Previously previewed by Chris Hatfield,
this component recently underwent
strength testing. In the demonstration,
a machine applied repeated high force
impacts to simulate potential accidental
bumps from astronauts. Vast explained
that these tests are essential for
validating the windows durability and
ensuring astronaut safety. Furthermore,
Vast has also been conducting nighttime
photography tests using the window to
evaluate its optical performance. These
tests measured how light from stars and
other celestial bodies interacted with
the windows multiple panes. The results
show minimal reflection and distortion,
confirming that the images captured from
orbit would meet professional quality
standards. Together, these efforts
highlight Vast's impressive progress.
From concept to physical design and
systems testing, the Haven 1 module is
proving to be more than just a bold
idea. It is becoming a tangible step
toward the future of living and working
in space. VAS continues to make
impressive progress on its Haven 1 space
station module with significant
milestones achieved in recent months.
One of the most intriguing developments
is the introduction of a critical device
known as the control moment gyroscope or
CMG. This technology plays a key role in
maintaining the station's orientation in
orbit. Haven 1 will be equipped with six
CMGs, each consisting of a high-speed
flywheel mounted on a gimbal. These
systems work together to control the
station's attitude without relying on
propellant, making the station more
efficient and sustainable. Vast has
confirmed that these gyroscopes are
currently being designed, manufactured,
and tested. Another vital component is
the flight structure of Haven 1. Vast
recently shared images of the nearly
completed silver toned structure, which
features a sleek design and visually
striking exterior. These images also
showcased the use of advanced welding
systems at work. Vast proudly announced
the completion of the first
circumferential weld on Haven 1's
primary flight structure, describing it
as a major step forward. As of their
most recent update in June, a second
circumferential weld has been completed.
This marks progress too out of the 10
total welds required to finish the
station's flight hole. Although this is
a major milestone, it also underscores
the significant amount of work still
ahead for the engineering and assembly
teams to ensure precision and safety.
Vast is also validating its welding
techniques using a development simulator
for the thermal pump tray assembly. This
simulator helps confirm that the welds
are not only repeatable and reliable,
but also meet the rigorous standards
needed for space flight. These tests
allow engineers to fine-tune their
process and address any potential
challenges early on. Meanwhile, the
Haven demo module has been fully
integrated and has successfully
undergone vibration testing at Vast's
headquarters. More systems are scheduled
for testing soon, especially those
critical for inorbit operations. These
include computers, power systems,
guidance and control, propulsion,
communication, radios, mission control
infrastructure, and ground station
connectivity. Each of these elements
supports various departments, including
engineering, manufacturing, integration,
and mission assurance, and collectively
strengthens VAST's overall readiness.
Another recent success is NASA's
validation of Haven 1's air filtration
system. This system is essential for
maintaining a safe and breathable
environment throughout every phase of
the mission and its approval represents
a key safety milestone for Vast's
astronaut operations. The spotlight
however remains on the official Haven 1
module which is currently stationed at
Vast's Mojave facility. Here it is
undergoing construction, integration and
system level testing in preparation for
launch. As we look ahead, the next year
will be a decisive one. Vast plans to
complete the production and testing of
the flight primary structure by July.
This will pave the way for vehicle
integration and the testing of all
subsystems scheduled to run from July
through December of 2025. Then in early
2026, the integrated vehicle will
undergo a series of environmental tests,
including acoustic, vibration,
electromagnetic interference, and
thermal vacuum tests. These testing
campaigns will take place from January
through March of 2026 and is essential
for verifying that Haven 1 can withstand
the harsh conditions of space. In April
and May of 2026, pre-launch operations
will begin at the designated launch
site. This will likely include critical
preparations such as the wet dress
rehearsal where the station is fueled
and tested under launch conditions. When
all systems are verified and ready,
Haven 1 will be mounted a top the launch
vehicle for its highly anticipated
journey into orbit. That historic moment
is expected to occur in May of 2026,
marking what many are calling the dawn
of the commercial space station era. It
is a bold vision that Vast is working
tirelessly to bring to life. With the
clear road map laid out and consistent
progress being made, do you believe
Haven 1 will meet its scheduled launch?

space development. With all the
groundwork being laid, Vast is
positioning itself for a highly active
and promising future in space. Like many
other upcoming commercial space
stations, Vast will rely heavily on
SpaceX to support its operational needs.
Shortly after Haven 1 is launched in May
of 2026, SpaceX and Vast plan to conduct
an uncrrewed mission to verify the
module's systems in orbit. Then around
the end of June of 2026, the first crude
mission is scheduled to take place. This
mission will carry four astronauts who
are expected to remain on board for
about 2 weeks. During this time, they
will likely be tasked with organizing
cargo, activating onboard systems, and
setting up the interior layout.
Essential steps to prepare the station
for longer rotational crew missions in
the future. Last year, the vast station
received a major boost in capability
thanks to a partnership with SpaceX to
integrate Starlink. As the most advanced
and extensive satellite internet network
to date, Starlink is known for
delivering high-speed, low latency
connectivity across the globe. Its
benefits have already been demonstrated
not just on Earth by aiding disaster
relief efforts and connecting remote
regions, but also in space through
missions like Polaris Dawn, Falcon
reusability tests, and Starship
development flights. Integrating
Starlink into the vast station brings
unprecedented connectivity, giving it a
distinct edge over competitors and
making it an extremely attractive option
for both NASA and other international
space agencies. Importantly, Haven 1 is
only the beginning of Vast's larger
space station ambitions. It serves as
the initial building block, helping the
company prove its capabilities and gain
experience through participation in
NASA's programs. Once operations have
stabilized and the first crude missions
are successful, Vast plans to develop
and launch Haven 2, a larger module that
follows the same design principles as
Haven 1, but with increased volume and
capability. The overall plan is to
launch four Haven 2 modules, which will
be assembled in orbit. These will later
dock to a core module delivered by
Starship, which will act as the central
hub for the station. Once attached, four
additional Haven 2 modules will be
launched and connected to the earlier
ones. effectively doubling the station's
size and creating a fully modular
expandable platform in low Earth orbit.
This architectural plan shows that Vast
is not just following current trends in
space station development. It is carving
out its own path with a scalable modern
approach. Combined with a solid timeline
and tested partnerships, the Vast
project is rapidly emerging as one of
the most promising hopes for maintaining
the United States's leadership in space
after the eventful retirement of the
International Space Station. With the
ISS approaching the final years of its
service and international competition
growing, especially with China's Tong
station gaining momentum through modern
design and state support, Vast's
progress provides a muchneeded assurance
of continued American presence in orbit.
Furthermore, its early development
schedule offers a significant advantage
over other commercial space station
projects such as Axiom Station, Orbital
Reef, and Starlab. While each of these
has its own vision and potential, many
are currently facing delays or lack the
concrete progress that Vast is
demonstrating. If all goes according to
plan, the launch of Haven 1 will mark
the beginning of a new era in commercial
space operations. And with the road map
already in motion, Vast may very well be
the first private company to redefine
how we live and work in orbit. A bright
and promising future is clearly
unfolding for the vast space station.
This project represents more than just
advanced engineering. It embodies the
hopes and ambitions of a nation and a
dedicated team working tirelessly to
bring it to life. From the carefully
planned launch schedule to the
innovative and modern interior designs
that have already captured public
attention, everything about the vast
station reflects a bold vision for the
next chapter of human presence in space.
Over the next few months, the Vast team
will be working intensely to meet
critical milestones that bring us closer
to a historic breakthrough. Haven 1 is
not just another space module. It is a
key step toward a future where humans
live, work, and thrive in orbit. The
moment we see Haven 1 successfully
launched into space will mark the
beginning of a new era in commercial
space exploration and habitation. So,
