I find myself here quite a lot and I enjoy the space.
The perspective of the house, the interesting thing is from the outside of the house,
it looks like it holds a secret and that secret's only unveiled as you walk
up the stairs and into the opening of the house.
The secret of this house lies in how it has been beautifully crafted
over a sloping terrain. Sloping terrains can be challenging to build on,
but they have the advantage of a breathtaking views.
How would you build on a site with not just one but multiple cascading slopes?
This is when the space planning becomes crucial.
Here, let us share with you the design that has been created
as a tiered complex with multiple interplay of spaces surrounding a central infinity pool.
My name is Alex Lee and I am from Design Seeds.
Today, we will be sharing with you this beautiful family home
embracing nature nestled in the green enclave of Ledang Heights in Johor Bahru.
Hi, I'm Jason. I'm from the UK. I've lived in Asia for the last 16 or 17 years.
The idea behind it is that we're a family of four, my wife and two children.
We wanted to create a house that gave a social space
while trying to keep the family together and connected.
This is actually cast-in-situ. So it's just cast-in-situ concrete, natural.
So we want to keep the material as natural as possible so that we have got,
you know, when you drive in, it's natural granite and then move on to natural concrete
and then natural timber. So we try to keep everything as natural as possible,
merging it with the landscape.
This is one of the tricks that I've actually studied from Barcelona Pavilion by Miss Penderol.
So as you look from the outside, the architecture-wise is on the arrival,
the simple form like tin roof to create something heavy but at the same time very light.
And also to create a formal look on the arrival that hence the reason why we introduced the
colony. So this is actually, we took a little bit of inspiration from classical architecture.
An entrance of composed line timber slates and concrete create an amazing first impression.
By curating a subtle entrance, Slab 10 makes the infinity pool the heart of this home.
So the house is split into three levels. There's a garden level which holds the art studio and
the guest suite. The main living floor is where you enter the property. We have an outdoor pavilion
and a men living dining area, wet kitchen, dry kitchen and also the entertainment room
and a parent's room. So the upper floor, it's all private. There's master bedroom and kids
bedrooms above. After studying the site, we decided we're going to orientate the building
towards the northeast facing. So that would allow us to have the maximum sunlight into the pool
and main living area. With the maximum sunlight coming in in the morning, we also would have to
look into how to protect the master bedroom above. Therefore, we have designed this special sun
shading device that can operate together with the curtain inside and also create a really
interesting architectural facade. The inspiration comes from gemstones. So basically that's how
this being translated into screen. So all these shutters right, every panel is done differently,
arranged differently, manually, one by one, triangulated. A practical yet aesthetic
function creating a mesmerizing facade contrasting the exterior. Mirroring light
into the spaces, it creates a surreal animated experience. And the design of the layouts of the
They're very spacious, very warm at the same time. It's quite possible to be too modern,
have this sterile, cold environment. The idea of the house is to have a beautiful house with
nice things, but the ability to enjoy those things and be comfortable.
Behind this is the wardrobe and a super fancy bathroom. Wow, have a look.
When it comes to veneer, it's always very tricky. So we need to find the right veneer. You want the
lines to stand out deliberately. So you can see all the black lines are very obvious in the chevron
pattern. And layers of lights, I think it's really important when it comes to spaces that you see on
the floor level actually define the wardrobe space as well as the one on top. And that also helps
with diffusing light to the interior. The master bathroom is wild, really. It's made for a couple.
So, you know, two sinks, two showers, two lavatories, a double-ended bath. The whole
idea was, you know, togetherness. And, you know, I guess a couple of the really
outstanding features are, one, there's an onyx wall, which is backlit and looks stunning at night.
And also the skylight, which during the day lets in the beautiful sunshine.
Entrance and the staircase, what I try to introduce here is something sculptural.
You know, when you look at it, it expresses itself as something you made from your hand.
It's a piece of artwork that cannot be easily done. The two spiral stairs to the first floor
stand in a dramatic backdrop of white marble flooring and a double-volume window.
I wanted to create something light, something sculptural, something monolithic at the first
look. With concrete, with timber, there is limitation. But with steel, to me, I think it's
very elastic. So it's almost like a sculpture that you can mold to create and then you can
integrate the structure, the platform, the handrail into one material. This whole sculpture
will look simple and seamless. In an open-plan layout, the living and dining maximizes entertaining
space. The timber slates and marble flooring can be visually heavy, but here the visuals
are balanced by simple details and formal composition. Furniture pieces in different
styles and tones contrast yet complement each other, adding character to the spaces.
Pops of green liven up the entire space. Almost all my projects, I try to conceal all my TV.
What we've done here is we made a seamless and simple box to conceal everything.
Dry kitchen, being functional, it's essential, it's really important. Paramount, I say.
You're sitting here, you're looking at it, so it's everything dotted underground,
and have it really simple. Cooking area, we have wine cupboards on the side.
The home theater dons a unique, vibrant color. By including similar timber flooring and motifs
of nature, this ensures a cohesive look in the entire house. I like the space. The coloring of
the room makes it a little bit darker, which makes it really ideal for relaxing at the end
of an evening and watching something on the projector screen. The design intention is a
horseshoe shape. Everything will orientate towards the infinity pool, which is the central
courtyard area. So for pool pavilion, that we have wrapped around this area with natural timber,
so from the floor to the wall to the ceiling, it's all finished with one timber finish,
and so this really defines this area. And everything else, the faces outside will have
essential openings, windows, just to draw the landscape into the house.
In architecture detail-wise, we learned from the old masters. Take for example, the unavoidable
columns at the veranda flank along the living room. They are treated in the way that it's
obscured in space with mirror reflective stainless steel cladding to mirage the columns.
By orientating the spaces towards the pool, the outdoor and indoor blends together seamlessly.
The internal spaces of the house are bathed in constant natural light.
The guest room is positioned on a lower level, enjoying its own private garden view.
Walking past the outdoor pavilion, that will go into the guest suite, which is separated from the
building. We wanted the guests and the host to have a total privacy from each other.
We have guests staying over the two guest rooms, junior suite and the guest wing,
have a beautiful bathroom with a focal point marble wall in the shower area,
which really draws your eye into it.
Through thoughtful space planning and architecture in multiple levels,
SLAB10 has minimized the excavation of land and filling, preserving the original landscape of
this home. This is a family home created in close physical and visual connection
with its green surroundings, in poetic celebration of the environment.
