With its bloody past, Dunlough Castle is said to be haunted, the tower dripping blood daily.
Apparently a drop of blood falls from the tower by the lake
daily
Oh yeah, we can walk in here
Oh, it's so dark
My journey began at North America's most northern drivable point
After riding through Canada and America
I've crossed over to Europe
From there I'll make my way across Asia
and down to Australia
New Zealand's southern most drivable point
will mark the end of my journey
I'm calling it the Big Spiral
and this is Act 4
Good morning from Cork, Ireland
Today is going to be a good one, I think
Here, I'll show you on the map
So we're just around here
This area, this yellow block is Cork
And the goal is to get right around here
But this whole area is apparently very beautiful
There's a national park in here
Apparently amazing driving
But I don't want to take the highway there
So I'm going to probably go south
and follow the coast
And, you know, just see what I can see
And I know there's some old castles
Well, it's a little cloudy today
But I think the rain's going to hold off
Although it looks like it's raining a bit now
But we'll see how it goes
We'll just stay optimistic
And yeah, we'll figure this out
Alright
So I figure while we're in Cork
We should at least ride through the city
Because it's kind of one of the famous places of Ireland
Cork is, it's quite beautiful here
And yeah, we should at least ride through the city, so
But yeah, I spent the last few days at the Airbnb there
And getting some work done
And, uh
The rumors are true
Ireland is often quite cloudy
I have to say, it doesn't rain a ton
It's just overcast
But I know in a day or two here, there's
The weather's going to improve
And we should get some sun, I hope, so
I gotta try to time my riding days to
To coincide with some sun, if I can
But it's amazingly warm here
Surprisingly warm
Hello, it's editor Eric here
The humidity in Ireland has been causing me some problems
And at the time I was waiting at this construction
The lens on my camera went from this
To this
There's no way I could have known this was happening as I was riding
So I'm going to try to edit around this hazy look
But there still will be a few shots of this kind of hazy thing
Just because it's part of the story
Alright, let's keep going with the video
Oh, these little Irish streets
With these cute little Irish shops
Everybody's turning in here
Which feels really weird cause now I'm on the right side
Of the road
But it's a bit flipped in this spot, I guess
Oh, this is a cute street, though
Lots of art
Things like this
Old church
I guess every little town has their own little flag
Like, I've noticed, you know, you ride through a town
And maybe it's a football thing
Cause I've seen signs for football clubs in these towns as well
And when I mean football, I'm talking about soccer
Not American football
If that isn't obvious
Look, there's a castle there! It's just right there!
This town has the same color flag, the green and yellow
Look at this guy, he doesn't even fit on the road
Oh, different colors now
Yellow and blue
Yes
Dom
So, oh, Dom for the double
Okay
I feel like I should look this up cause I have no idea what's going on with these flags
Cute little town again
So many cute little towns
My new flags again
Green, white and black
I think that's the ocean
The Atlantic Ocean
So, the last time I saw that was in Halifax
In Canada
When I went to the edge of town and did my boots in the ocean
And now, I'm on the other side
Kinda cool, so I guess I should dip my boots in the ocean, huh?
Oh, oh!
What's that?
There's some ruins there!
Oh, it's so cool
Very moody here
It's kinda cool
The closer we get to the coast, the moodier it gets
Pretty cool out here, actually
And a pink house
Wow, what an interesting place
This fills with water at high tide, I guess
And then it just stays there
Gas station right there
Just on the street
Dunlop Castle, Three Castle Head
Okay
So, I'm on a peninsula right now
So basically, it's a dead end
So I guess the more I go this way, the less people will travel here
And the roads get smaller and smaller
Small enough to have grass growing in the middle
Wow, it's cool here
Hi cows
Wow, look at that
Oh, there's a gate
No drones
But it is
Quite gorgeous here, very moody
I've heard the west coast of Ireland is quite
quite good, so
It seems to be true, cause
We're fairly west now
The path here
Look, the sun's actually coming out over there
Oh, there
It's right there
Wow
That is cool
I wonder why they built a castle all the way out here
It's just kinda the middle of nowhere, isn't it?
There's like a big cliff here
Oh, looks like they boarded it up
Wow
There's like a room in there
Oh, you can walk in!
Wow
Wow, this is so cool
Oh ya, they blocked that off cause it's a cliff
Ya, you can see like it's a
A V shape
So like you can shoot arrows at different angles, I guess
Out?
Wow
So this castle was built in 1207
And it, they used dry masonry
So that means they didn't use cement or anything like that
Although they did use something called blue till, which is
A residue of the slate out here
But basically the rocks found here are fairly angular and
And kinda squared off flat
And so that makes it relatively easy
To kind of assemble these walls
Ya, some of it has collapsed in, hasn't it?
I guess this is okay to walk on
Oh, it's so dark
Small little room here
But this, this tower closest to the lake
Was apparently three stories tall at one point
It's still pretty tall
Let me see, is it still three stories?
Oh, well ya, it's pretty much still three stories
Just kind of crumbled a little
Now apparently the last family that lived here was the O'Donohues
And the speculation is that
They all died by suicide or murder, which is just
And because of this, apparently a drop of blood falls from the tower by the lake
Daily
Ya know, every time I visit one of these castles, there's always just some horrible
Story associated with it
It's also been said that there's still gold sitting in the bottom of the lake there
Alright, well
That was interesting
And it seems, oh maybe, maybe not
But like, the fog seems to be clearing
But maybe as I climb, ya know, go back into the fog
It's a really beautiful part of the world here though
Oh, a tunnel
Fog!
This is crazy
I didn't expect this
Wow
Oh, another tunnel
Oh, oh this is cool
This is a broken man
He's at the bar anytime he can
His wrinkled face, he knows no smile
I've forgotten the man on the sadness isle
When you go back to Dublin town
Don't stay long, or they'll let you down
To all of you, I wish you well
If all the bad goings end
So I just asked the owner of the Airbnb
What's the deal with all the flags in all the villages?
And he says, ya, it's Gaelic football
So every little village is having a championship right now
So they're all flying their colours
And so that's what that is all about
But ya, I don't really know what Gaelic football is
But ya, there's a Gaelic football pitch down there
And it's a female team practicing right now
And ya
But I haven't eaten anything since breakfast
So I think I'm gonna go down to the pub
And I might try a pint of Guinness
I haven't had booze since, I think
That Sourtoe in Dawson City
That one really messed me up
So I might try a pint of Guinness
Because it's such an Irish thing
I gotta try it
But anyways
I'll see you guys tomorrow
And we'll continue our adventure
In the Kerry region
