We explore using AI tools, like ChatGPT, to design, run, and grade a French PBL unit. Witness students taking charge, drafting, and revising, culminating in presentations and creative projects. While AI offered support, the experiment highlighted the irreplaceable role of human teachers in fostering student expression. Hey, language teachers, this experiment might just change how you teach.
I used ChantGPT to help design, run, and even grade a full French PBL unit.
But the twist is not just about French.
This can work for any language classroom.
By day five, I wasn't teaching.
My students were running the show.
They draft, they revise, they came to me only when they needed help.
Real autonomy in a language class.
Each student group delivered their slides, read their original poem aloud,
and showcased posters they had handwriting in French cursive.
Yet 90% of them choose to write that way.
Not required, just inspired.
Then it was time to grade.
I gave ChantGPT their oral presentation notes, their slides,
their final posters.
I asked it to grade like a teacher.
It worked, almost.
The grades were pretty fair, but formatting broke.
Cursive bonuses disappeared.
Rubrics got shuffled.
It reminded me AI can support us, but can't replace the human teacher.
Not yet.
This was the last part of my experiment.
I planned this whole PBL using ChantGPT, ran it with my students,
and graded everything with AI.
And you know what?
It pushed them to express themselves in ways they never have before.
On the full process, all the ChantGPT prompts, students' handouts,
rubrics, feedback templates are linked in my bio.
This isn't just about French.
This works for any language teacher ready to blend AI with real teaching.
Semester is over.
See you in the next school year.
Happy teaching!
