We try to RAISE whiskey proof with an old chemistry trick - salting out.
We post this they watched this video recently from the action lab. He was using isopropyl alcohol
And salt some coloring from a marker so you could see how the separation occurs, but can you do that with whiskey?
Whoa now, maybe the salting out process is just for lab rats and not whiskey nerds
Holy hell. Oh my god
maybe
Dudes it's already happening
This is so much better of a response that I could have actually imagined if we really can't include this
That might be one of the best scotches
This is an attempt to use chemistry to up that proof
in the whiskey
And we have three attempts. Hopefully the first two work because the third kind of salt is a kill your ass kind of salt
hazardous
if it works it should
Theoretically allegedly be okay for me to sample because if it works, it's all right. We'll see first
Okay, uh the salt. All right this
and
First time we're gonna do just straight up table salt
If you hear licking in the background, we have a doof in the room
like any good lab
You have to have animals
This is really full. Hopefully this salt doesn't take all the room and give us a spill
Dude is this gonna overflow? No
The guy in the action lab he was using isopropyl alcohol
but
I'm, really hoping this gives us some kind of result
Because if we get to this final stage of salt
You can't drink it. You keep saying you're gonna sample it. Like I I got a sample. No, I've looked at it
We'll see look this may work right if we get to the final step. It's knocking off the proof
It's pulling all of the water out
It's going to be pure alcohol and the chemical you can't consume
But the flavor though
Look man, look i'm not don't try this at home
But it's a maddening experience whenever you have that whiskey that is just heartbreaking because you know that whiskey wants to give you more
But you know for a variety of reasons distilleries. This is not doing anything
You know, they they have more profit if they proof a whiskey down and it just so happens that the mass market out there
They like a gentler softer
Smoother whiskey with more water down, but you want that proof. This is dissolving a bit
Hmm
It's not doing this salting out the product. You don't see the different phases
of
Ethanol layer and water layer table salt sodium chloride. That's a no-go. We're gonna move on to ammonium sulfate
It's using fertilizer, which is kind of like going into food
Okay, here we go
These are just big fat grains
ammonium sulfate
It's a more aggressive salt, but we really want to basically kick off this civil war between the ethanol
And the water so they don't like each other they separate effectively giving you a higher proof
Something i'm not sure at that point you could even call it a whiskey anymore
Okay, yeah that barely even got cloudy typically in salting out you're gonna have this cloudy liquid that you can see separate
But this isn't even getting cloudy. So that leaves us with the uh
the poison
Yeah
Do we don't have rubber gloves or something?
This is the one that could get us in trouble
If we're not very careful about every step of handling this stuff if it works, then all the the poison
Should be down at the bottom separate from the spirit the ethanol at the top
We're starting with about a 125 proof here
Okay, this is the bad one death jar. Yeah death funnel
Is it just me or does that look darker than it did when we started
Oh, it looks a lot darker. Oh, wow. Yeah, you can see it next to the other ones
Weird. Oh my the heat
Is it hot the heat coming off of this feel that we should probably take that
What the heck? All right. Hold on. This is a chunk at the bottom, by the way, dude, it's getting darker
It looks like paint varnish. Oh my gosh, it's nice and tight
Wow these chunks really don't want to let go there may be some solid residue on the bottom
I'm, not too concerned about that because the poison stuff should be living on the bottom. It should just be giving us
Ethanol whiskey stuff on top more of a concentration a higher proof for the love of god people don't try this at home
Fortunately, i'm not at home
Very cloudy big chunk right there. Give me a spoon to break this up, please because I need this solid
I need the solid down low. Oh, yeah
So i'm getting the solids away from the top
Nice and cloudy so far
Optimistic that we have this much cloudiness this much change in color. Let's get it. Oh dudes. It's already happening
Are you kidding me?
phase
Shifting that transformation that is kicking off
Let's see. What happened is just giving it a little bit more time
Let's give it a 30. We're gonna time lapse this for like half an hour. See if anything changes. I think the light is just
Illuminating it from this way
Yeah, that's pretty good
It is pulling the ethanol up and the water out it's kicking off a little civil war between those two liquids this episode brought to you
By mando mando
It's really nice
Smelling deodorant that is designed to last a super long time
It smells really good. That one is the bourbon leather
So like this is you know, especially formulated for dudes out there supposed to block
Your odor all day and then you control it for up to 72 hours
which you know is one of those things where that's a big number does it work I put on the
Mando the 72 hour the deodorant under em deodorant. Yeah, and I didn't shower
And I didn't uh, you know reapply or anything
one single day do people go
Let's talk. This is in like walmart. This is in target. This is all over the place
You can give retailers so it's easy to get your hands on it
But when you go to shop mando.com you use code tribe i'm gonna get you a special deal right now comes with a solid deodorant
Cream tube deodorant and two free products of your choice like the mini body wash and deodorant wipes and free shipping and free shipping
As a special offer for the mbs new customers get five dollars off the starter pack with their exclusive code
That equates to over 40 off your starter pack whenever you use code tribe at shop mando.com
Because you can so clearly see the separation. Yeah
You can really see like you could actually see the fat
Okay resting that's what i'm thinking because there's like this really thin yeah tan layer. Yeah in between
the motor oil black
And the what would be the poison?
Salty water down here and it's so interesting when you go just on this mucky water
It does look like you dove into a pond or something and are trying to see through goggles
Okay, let's see what this like. Yeah blast it. Yeah
You seeing that?
It looks like an oil and water type of deal
The craziest part about it to me is that it stays together. Yeah, like what you just did all that
I was worried about handling it at first, but it all it's fully I don't know if it's fully separated
But it's real separated and it wants to stay that way
Didn't turn on
What do we have?
162.4
That is
So that was a blend of woodford reserve and benchmark full proof, okay, okay
This worked it did. Um, let's try with some different proof whiskies
Can we take a lower proof whiskey that you wish was higher proof that happens in scotch all the time like a glenmorengi
Let's do glenmorengi. Let's do something higher proof. Yeah, what's that?
Speak of the higher proof the 132 on the jack daniels barrel proof. Okay
Mind your butts
And we do need to give this a shake. I would say vigorously stir first, man. It clumps
I don't like that at all
Whose idea was it to stir this? This is horrible. This is bad. This is
Wow
Okay, maybe we just go to the shake you're converted i'm converted quick because it all clumps together team shake
It's immediately darker. Yeah, it is do its thing
Super cloudy and then already just within seconds. Whoa looks like it's moving down. Wow. Okay. Let's check that out
No, you should not drink this. This is a
We need to compare
Somebody has to continuously remind people don't try this at home, please
next up glenmorengi
So we're gonna have some stickage to the inside of the funnel because it's wet from the alcohol
I mean you can kind of you want me to just freeball it
Nobody's asking you to do that. You want me to freeball it?
Nobody is saying those words except you I hear a lot of people in the comments saying freeball it
ready
It's already getting dark
It's not getting hot hot just very warm. Yeah. Okay. Let's get in here see
Wow, this one's doing something weird where it's like stuck in the middle. Yeah, what is going on here?
I wonder if that's gonna yeah, there's there's multiple, you know what in the in the bourbon
There was a very very thin like tan layer right there
Between the light poison salty water and then the what supposedly is more pure ethanol
But that floater is staying at roughly the same spot. It's just slightly getting darker and darker
So interesting
Well a lot of white down here as opposed to this one is just yellow and this started with more more powder
Yeah, you see less now. Yeah, and this one's clumpier i'm thinking right now
The difference between new oak barrels and used barrels. Okay, if this is like tannin dark
Lignin like wood the things that are going to come from the barrel the char the freshly charred barrel
You're putting in the spirit. This is a used barrel. So it has less of that to pull out
You know what? Let's do a fireball. Why not?
and
What's this sticky from the sugar?
With something that clearly has actual sugar in it. Absolutely not no clue what's about to happen
It's getting pulled through
Wait go back to this. Yeah
There's a crater that's happening in the middle of it. It keeps pulling more and more of it right down in there. Yeah
More and
There may be so much goop
In the fireball that it's not giving that clear quick separation that we were seeing in the whiskey whiskeys
All right, let's do a quick time lapse on here. Yeah, and then we will have sunny taste test every single one
There is technically a line that you were supposed to hit on this and that's total nonsense you can it's a plunger
so it'll just kind of suck up and absorb and give you a
Very accurate reading even if it's not perfect. Okay, so
I don't want to put that sugary nonsense inside. No, we're not. Yeah, that's
That is super goopy and weird. You might be able to eat that like a candy with the jack daniels
132 proof we're trying to beat 132 proof. All right, can we be 132? Don't go too deep. Here we go
Holy hell, dude
For just a second for just a moment
It flashed at 184. This is so much better of a response that I could have actually imagined
The the ethanol and the water are absolutely
Aggressively being separated that salted out water is just being stripped away from the ethanol layer
Just leaving behind ethanol and hopefully that toxic
Salty layer is just going to be down at the bottom. This is so interesting
Okay, glenn marangi next. All right, trying to be 43
that's going to be
86 proof
Can rex and sunny multiply by two?
It's a very different episode
Holy hell, oh my god, that's 174 proof glenn moranji people would pay
We made 174 proof
Uh, I think the good people of glenn moranji would take issue with us calling this glenn moranji
Now i'm starting to want to try it this is forbidden scotch now, oh, yeah, this is amazing. All right, so we have our
jack daniels pour
Right here and we'll do a little comparison very carefully
surgically removing
the ethanol
Layer from the top. What is this going to taste like? We've done the research the the
Probability of it being like an actual health situation
The trace amounts that we're going to be taking i'm going to be spitting actually but if we consumed
All of that in the bottom. Yeah, that would be potentially a deadly situation
Yes, you can clearly see the separation has occurred. We're going to take from the top where it is
Separate just the very smallest amount to taste it
So we have done the background research to make sure that we're not going to get rushed to a hospital
Look, there's two parts of this number one. Don't try this at home. Number two. We might get diarrhea
Let's find out are we going for it? Let's go for it, dude. Let's see what this looks like
Okay, I think that is an adequate amount, okay
Doing these one at a time. Yeah, and you know what? We got a banana and a doof
Buddy boy. How are you guys? Look at him. Look at him. That's a good doof right there. That's a quality. Oh wow
I really like that. Yeah, lovely. Okay, it's almost worse to start with something good very oak forward
Jack daniels gives you a lot of heat and a lot of like maturation. This is a delightful pour. You haven't noticed this yet
Here we go
Whoa, that smells like chemicals. Yeah
Y'all that smells like something you shouldn't put in your mouth. Yeah. No, this is uh,
this was taken behind a woodshed and beaten to death with
all of the used
public restroom cleaning equipment
The stuff that'll take the paint off a wall
It almost smells like a cleaning product. Yeah, like it really this is horrible
That being said
All right, this was my rinsing. Yeah, let me grab a i'm doing the dot of the tongue
Yeah, i'm just placing my tongue against it quickly and then i'm gonna drink some water. There we go
Wait, hold on
I hate everything i'm about to say. I know what you're gonna say. It's not bad
I
the most
Radically different setup from nose to palate but that core essence of jack daniels not cranked to 11
cranked to like
50. Yeah broke the no broke the dial broke the measurement
A lot of I mean don't get me wrong. It was oversimplified
It was just that core core essence, but i'm not hating
The result it's not on the nose at all. And also you're talking about the heat the perceived warmth
It feels like it's warmed up. Oh, yeah, like the temperature feels like it's heated up the moment. It hits your tongue. It's just
Okay, don't do this doll
No, really don't but the fact that this was totally different from the nose and it is more recognizably
Dude I would go as far as to say that
Blinding these if it's going to strip it down to one note
I'd know it's a brown form and product based off the banana because that just punched me in the face when more energy
This is gonna taste like water now. This is so fruity and
This is water right now. Yeah
No, there's nothing here
I could I could chug lenmore and g just like this tea
There'd be no difference after hitting that much heat. Look at the wiggle on that thing
I was so worried about moving any single one of these. Yeah, but the moment you start doing it
It just stays together like a jello shot. There we go. God. It just looks like bad whiskey
First the nose here. This is glenmore ng crank. Okay, one more on the nose on the misery
It's a very different nose. It still has that cleaning product element totally in the background. Yeah, okay
Man, just the burn coming off that though. Cheers
We post this
Don't do this don't do this it's thick you can feel like the thickness of it the heat the flavors all get cranked up
I don't want to say any of this this has a focus and concentration
That i've never found in scotch because you have such a delicate asian character
To get this level of intensity people peen up their scotch and then you like bomb your palate
This is a punch in the face in a way
Okay
Like really though no like actually don't do this i'm gonna finish this but don't do it
He's not gonna he's not gonna finish this. He's not gonna finish this. What the **** dude?
That happened
One more go back to the nose though. I know. Oh, I know
It's a red kidney green
You honestly like just a dot on the tongue don't well
You don't have to drink it because you're very self-conscious about health and all that bit
But if you want something really good in your life that you shouldn't have that actually smells good i'm saying i'm saying I
I think the new I think the new oak is really too much for this process
It's like chocolate if you made it with goat milk
Like it's kind of good. It's kind of like like goatee
I'm, not getting that at all like
That's terrible it is
So much heat it's holy hell it's it's holy I I I we really can't include this
That might be one of the best scotches
I haven't had a crazy lineup of vertical scotch in my life
That is the most intensive interesting scotch i've ever had the most it's the scotchiest scotch ever scotch ever ever
This makes it it takes like this ball of scotch and then it does like this black hole
Gravitational just critically just crunching it down. It's so condensed. Yeah, it's so thick. Okay now it's kind of
like
Fruit with no cheese. No, why the goat?
All right. All right, you put goat cheese on fruit
Put a little couple chocolates in there. Give me put it in a basket. Give it to somebody just don't try it
Just don't do it
This is one of those episodes where i'm obligated to say don't try this at home
If you get some very key critical parts of this process wrong that it is legitimately dangerous
