What will win in a drag race between a Ferrari SF90,
a mentally fast hybrid supercar,
and a BMW M3 Touring, which is a family estate car?
Oh, it does have a built engine and 1,000 horsepower.
We're going to find out by racing them over the standing quarter mile.
I'm Al Watson, and you're watching Car Wow.
This BMW M3 Touring has been tuned by G-Tech Motorworks.
It has a fully built engine and gearbox and an upgraded exhaust,
so now makes 1,000 horsepower and 1,100 newton-metres of torque.
It has all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox
with launch control.
It weighs 1,865 kilograms and costs £150,000, including the upgrades.
The Ferrari SF90 Spyder has a four-litre twin-turbo V8
with three electric motors, 1,000 horsepower, 800 newton-metres of torque,
all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with launch control.
It weighs around 1,770 kilograms and this one costs £550,000.
Do you know what? I'm really excited about this
because I've got a feeling this is going to be the quickest BMW M3 Touring
I've ever driven or am probably ever going to drive.
Huge thanks to G-Tech Motorworks and Tom Wrigley for lending us this car.
We're going to see how it performs.
Let's have a little word with racing drivers, Sam.
Hey, Sam. My car's heavier than yours. We've got the same horsepower.
I've got more torque. What's going to happen?
This is going to win.
You're going to win. You're very confident.
No excuses. You'd like to get in early doors.
This is going to win.
That's another fuss for me, Sam.
You not even coming up with an excuse.
You come up with excuses even when you're clearly in the quicker car,
but not today.
That's just as quick as this, but this is meant to be this.
That's not meant to be that. This will win.
And now he's just talking gibberish.
I don't know what to do. What's happened to Sam today?
Anyway, before we get into that, let's do the obligatory Car Wow sound check.
Wind is dying.
Aftermarket exhaust and built engine.
I mean, that's why electric cars can never be as fun.
Correct. Pops and bangs win everything. We know the rules.
Let's hear yours. You're going to lose.
You've lost, but just do it anyway. Let's tick a box.
Nice, flat, plain, crank, smooth rev, but pretty characterless, isn't it?
Yeah, it's missing the old Ferrari engines, isn't it?
Do you know what? The 296 sounds better. Here's a listen to one of those.
See? Anyway, let's get into the drag racing.
Before we do, if you like drag racing, but you like shorter drag races,
let's chat. You need to check out our new channel, Car Wow Drags.
There, we're uploading shortened versions of our drag race videos.
Go check it out. Go subscribe there,
because there'll be videos that you won't have seen,
just because, you know, algorithm.
Now let's go on with the race, but before we do,
if you want to compare these car stats side by side,
then all you have to do is pause the video now.
Now, before we race, Sam, the tarp that's built this engine, right,
it's got everything done to it.
It's got, like, forged pistons, forged head.
It's all completely new, the engine, pretty much.
But one of the most interesting things is a billet intake manifold,
and he says it's so thick, with a separate chamber for the air to go in
to keep it cool or whatever, that even if I do a pull in this car,
I raz it up the runway, come back, open the bonnet,
put my hand on the inlet manifold, it shouldn't burn my hand.
I don't believe him. Do you believe him?
No.
Do you think I'm stupid enough to try it, though?
Yes.
Well, we'll do that in a moment, so let's do the first drag race,
and then I'm going to check the inlet manifold,
see if my man's talking s***.
Right, guys, we're going for a save.
No, wait, wait, I'm in the BMW.
I should have the problem engaging launch control,
especially as this is a tuned car, but...
That's it, out of range, so I can't hear what nonsense he's saying.
Sam, what's going on? Did your launch control not engage?
No, it engages every time, subject to the car being warm enough.
The car is now warm enough, and we are good to go,
and I will proceed with winning this race.
You probably will.
Come on, BMW team, come on!
Plucky underdog.
If your hand's all you want, it won't help you go any faster.
Oh, look! Oh, it skipped a gear a bit there.
Oh, bye-bye!
Come on, it's pulling it back!
Oh! I had my window open a little bit there,
it created a bit more drag. He won't appreciate that.
And so maybe in the next one, I'll beat him.
Mate, that was close.
It was close, but your car is much longer,
so it kind of gives an optical illusion your bonnet was closer.
What? Shut your... What?
Our bonnets start at the same point on the starting line!
Right, do you know what I'm going to do? Intake test.
Let's head back down and see if I'm going to burn my hand.
I am 100% behind you for this.
Lee, can you come up here in your ambulance, please?
I'm going to touch the inlet manifold and I might have severe burns.
We're all ready.
Wow. That is amazing.
Look at this.
It's Smyrna time.
Three, two, one.
Got him.
Um, Stewart, did I jump?
I actually saw the hands going down as I was driving by.
Yes, you did.
Oh, Sam, I'm so eager.
That was so quick. That was better than last time.
Oh!
Jumped again.
OK. Yeah, marginally,
but this backed out of its own launch, so it didn't shift up.
Stewart, did I jump that time?
Yes, you did.
What's going on?
Three, two, one.
What is it? What's going on?
Is it me or is Will being slower than normal?
I'm living rent-free in his head. Rent-free.
Nick, can you start the race, please?
Will, you're sacked.
Don't blame me if you have a bad time.
A really terrible job and I've taken up on the offer.
Oh, no, you're playing with my head, Nick.
Three, two, one.
Oh, come on, it's coming past.
It is, it's going to come past. Come on!
Come on!
That was really close.
What on earth? This thing, it's getting quicker.
I think that was almost down to the timing of the gear change.
These things are so close, aren't they?
You had me on the line, for sure,
because I still programmed into, like, Will's slower launch.
You've obviously got racing driver skills that you can just...
This is going to be such a close decider.
Unless I have done so many false starts,
we could call it quits here and you can just say you won.
No.
Oh, brave.
Gave him the opportunity. Let's see what happens now.
Come on!
Oh, wow. That was close, but not close enough.
Ferrari wins, baby.
This had a little falter on the launch.
Look, you can say flutters, you can say all excuses.
I can have all my excuses. I've got a big hardback book,
which is on sale soon, by the way.
But I think, last race, that's it. Winner takes all.
That's rather sporting of you, Sam. You don't have to do this.
Pop my money where my mouth is moment, isn't it?
Oh, crap. Let's do that, because it's so close between these two.
Come on, Ferrari!
Yes!
It is most definitely Schmörner time.
If you know, you know.
Now, I don't want to be that guy,
but I think you might have jumped.
No, I didn't.
If one of you did, both of you did.
You both left at the same time. Exactly. We've checked it.
Yes!
What I would say is that's had inconsistent launches, right?
This has been on the button time after time after time.
So, you know, I don't know.
Yeah, you did get the win on that one.
Well, you did give me the option of doing one last race and winner takes all.
Ultimately, it's two each,
but technically, because you gave me the option, thanks so much,
you probably wish you hadn't been so ballsy, but there we go.
Yes, this has been not as consistent, but it's still consistently quick.
We're just talking tenths of a second.
And the thing that's been most inconsistent, if we're honest about it,
is the idiot piece of meat behind the wheel.
There are two stupid lumps of meat behind two steering wheels here, so yeah.
Do you know what? I quite like a draw.
I think that's the fairest, best ending, isn't it?
It's not a draw, because he said it was like winner takes all,
and this is the result.
So then, what exactly happened?
Well, the finish line camera showed that the BMW just beat the Ferrari,
but both cars completed the standing quarter mile in 9.6 seconds.
Before our next race, a little message that could save you big time.
If you're looking to buy a used car, bike or van anytime soon,
then this is for you.
We've partnered with our friends at CarVertical to give you a special offer
to check that it's not a write-off, stolen or had its mileage changed.
Look at this Porsche 911 on CarVertical.
It's got green ticks for odometer and legal status, but a damage warning.
Why? It was previously involved in an accident
suffering significant impact damage and even had a broken suspension arm.
So, when buying a used car, bike or van,
run a CarVertical report using code CARWOW for 20% off
or by following the link in the description.
Now, back to the race.
What we're going to do now is have a rolling race, 50 miles an hour.
We're going to have the cars in their least sporty setting.
Mine is efficient.
What's your least sporty setting?
It's called ED.
So, I guess it's efficient, dynamic, I don't know.
Are you sure that doesn't mean electric drive?
Don't you want hybrid mode?
Yeah, it is in E drive. It's in hybrid.
It's in the lowest setting it can have.
Now, if you'd like to see the price that I've got one of these cars through on CarWOW,
just click on the pop-out banner or scan the QR code on screen now.
There's a good deal on one. It could be new, it could be used.
It could be the Ferrari, it could be the BMW.
Click the link, find out.
Three, two, one, go.
Kick down.
Oh, my God!
I just can't get in.
I thought this would be like hanging.
Okay, so my efficient mode didn't feel very efficient at all.
I think I used quite a lot of fuel there.
I don't think there was anything efficient about what you just did
other than the way you got off the line.
Blimey, what happened to your car?
Literally nothing for about nine years, and then it decided to get on with it.
Let's run again, but sporty setting, manual mode, third gear, roll from 50.
Let's do it.
I'm so serious about this that I've not got the air-con on.
I'm so competitive right now.
That's why I kept on doing those false starts.
So, just cool my pits down because they're getting a little bit watery.
Let's get in there.
I can only do the one side.
I'm going to have asymmetric sweating.
Three, two, one, go.
Come on!
I'm reeling him back in. Come on!
Come on!
Well, my goodness.
Your car shot off because of the hybrid system,
and then I was reeling you in,
but I think I needed an extra 10 metres to take you.
I definitely crossed the line before you,
but I couldn't believe the speed you were about to come past me at, though.
Good God.
This is so fast. Like, so fast.
I was knocking on the door of 180 miles an hour crossing that line,
and you were coming past me.
I had to keep on looking where I was going.
I wasn't looking down there.
Oh, right. Let's go with the final challenge.
Now, if you'd rather watch another drag race with some tuned BMWs,
click on the pop-out banner there or scan the QR code on screen now.
If not, stay here for some braking testing.
Move my seat a bit more forward.
God, these gear changes.
Unless you're fully on it, they're a little bit jerky.
That's it. It's better now.
It's got some torque. Here's the line of truth.
Oh, yeah, you won quite by some significant margin.
I think we need to upgrade the brakes further on this, don't we?
Yeah, I don't know. I won.
It's a Ferrari, isn't it? It's a supercar.
This, still at the end of the day, is an estate.
An estate that beat you in a drag race.
Forget about the brake test. Who cares?
Actually, roll forward. Let's count the car lengths.
I think it's going to be about three.
That is one.
That's two.
Getting on for three.
Anyway, thanks to the guys that lent us these cars.
Really appreciate it. Steve Kira with the SF90.
Thanks to G-Tech Works and Tom Wrigley for lending us this.
Anyway, if you want to compare these cars
quite more times to everything else we've had at a drag race,
just click on the CarWow logo
to check out the CarWow Drag Race leaderboard.
Thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time.
