A few days ago, four brand new kittens, all girls, arrived just in time to celebrate the holiday
season. They belong to proud mom Diane, a two-year-old snowshoe cat.
The snowshoe is a rare breed named for its signature snowy white feet.
They're a cross between the Siamese and the bicolor American Shorthair.
The breed originated in the late 60s in Philadelphia
when a Siamese cat gave birth to three playful kittens wearing white socks.
Diane, as a first-time mom, is pretty meticulous. She likes things just so
and doesn't want a single hair on a single kitten out of place. With her four kittens neatly in
place, there's not much room for Siamese dad Smokey, who appears to know his place.
At just a few days old, the kittens can't get very far,
which is fine with Diane, who likes her little ones close and contained.
But some are harder to contain than others. This is Eloise.
She's already eager to take her snowshoes out for a stroll.
So far, Diane hasn't realized someone's missing.
So pleased with her progress, Eloise wants everyone to hear all about it.
But one look from mom tells the tyke it's time to get home.
So Eloise turns her tiny snowshoes around.
And Diane's pleased to have everything just so again.
While mom Diane keeps her kittens corralled,
dad Smokey finds himself on the outskirts again.
And with all this time to himself, things could get a bit boring for this new dad.
Luckily, he's got a friend to help him pass the time.
Meet Doogie, the resident Brussels Griffon.
When dad Smokey is in need of some fun, and the cats are catnapping, Doogie is his dog.
Smokey and Doogie go way back. By now, they're regular old wrestling buddies.
But this match is turning into a marathon.
Playing with his old pal Doogie is fun and all,
but sometimes the persistent pup is a bit too much.
So when Smokey decides he's had enough, it's back to his new dad duties.
It is five weeks before Christmas with snow on the ground.
And inside the snowshoe house, there's cheer all around.
Four little kittens are tucked in their nest, while mom keeps them looking their holiday best.
At two weeks, the kittens' white feet are getting more distinctive.
But mom Diane is in no rush to see those snowshoes in use.
She likes her brood within paw's reach.
Dad Smokey would gladly step in,
but the doting mom doesn't appear to be taking a break anytime soon.
Smokey stays close in case Diane changes her mind.
And at last, dad's moment arrives.
Lucky for him, mom's got the kittens well trained.
Until the moment dad turns his back.
And mischievous Eloise seizes that moment to take her snowshoes out for another stroll,
which gives her sisters the same idea.
Soon, four little kittens with snowy white mittens are gone from their bed.
Dad finally notices, but isn't sure what to do.
All he knows is that this won't go over well with Diane,
who's back from her break.
So dad makes a break for it himself.
Luckily, Diane gets order restored and ushers her kittens neatly into place.
With dad Smokey put back in his place.
Tis a few weeks before Christmas, and at the snowshoe cat's lair,
holiday fever is filling the air.
The five-week-old kittens can now pounce, hang, and hop.
But something's made Eloise come to a stop.
From the next room, a strange pop, pop, pop.
And when nobody's looking, mischievous Eloise sets off to investigate.
She doesn't know what these things are, but they sure are fun.
And tasty too.
And each one leads her to another,
and another, until Eloise reaches the end of the trail.
But she soon realizes there's no easy trail back down.
