If you're going to hit a bump and run shot, that means that you have to lock up, put your
hand very strong, put your hands forward, and then lock up.
Now watch.
Now watch where the hand is.
You put your hand there, and then you put your hands forward, see, and then you pull.
You see that?
And that's all you do.
Now you land it 80 yards short, and watch this, there it is.
It's a very easy shot.
Again, let me show you again.
Now, notice, watch the body.
If you put this in slow motion, you can see that the body...
Now look, when I finish, look at where my hand is.
My left hand is still in front of the club face.
Most people that try to hit their shot, when they finish, they're in this position.
So if you're going to hit a bump and run shot, that means that you have to lock up, put your
hand very strong, put your hands forward, and then lock up.
Now watch.
Now watch where the hand is.
See it?
Now, uh-oh, uh-oh, break ball, ah, that's it.
You see that?
This is...
Or try to hit it low and bump it.
The problem is that the grip has everything to do with it, because your subconscious mind
works here.
And what happens when people want to hit the ball low and keep it straight is that they've
used their regular grip, in other words, which you're looking at a normal grip if
you can see the hand, if you can see the right hand and the left hand, and the right hand
is on top where it should be.
When now to hit a bump and run shot, we're talking about a hold shot, which means when
you're coming into the ball, you're going to be holding this way.
In order to do this, then you have to play with the right hand.
You've got to put the right hand underneath to where you can't see any knuckles on the
right hand.
Now, you have to think about this, because now, if you don't hold it and you let this
hand go back up to this normal position, you're going to hit yourself a low hook.
So in order to hit a little 80-yard bump and run shot, say to that green that you're looking
at there, is you take your hand here and you put your hands forward.
Then, when you're coming back, the only thing that you do with this shot is you hold on
and you just keep turning.
The Torpedoes are away, and there is that familiar routine, a little tap of the brim
of the cap, step in, open stance, and just let that short-game magic deliver.
Very similar shot to what we saw him hit on the 72nd hole of the Players' Championship
at the Ole Sawgrass Country Club.
A little driving wedge into the wind.
You've got to hop in there and stop, and you've got to make a birdie and win that.
There it is.
That's in.
That went in.
That went in the hole.
So I'm on the wall.
You're on the wall.
And then go.
Exactly.
The more you want the ball in the back of your stance, and the weaker that you want
your right hand, because you don't want this golf club ever turning.
Right.
Because what's going to happen to you is when you get in this position here, and you start
slowing down, watch what happens.
You flip.
And you flip.
And here you go.
Amen.
So any time, even if you have this little shot right here, most people would take this
shot and they'd have it here, just inside their left heel.
No good, because now you don't have options with that ball up there because it's a short
shot.
Right.
In other words, for you to hit this shot and be good with it is that you've got to be coming
down into the ball with the club coming down at the ball, not ever going up.
That way you control the bounce on this club.
So what you have to do is you have to move this ball back, just inside your left heel.
Break your knees towards the target.
Notice how the right knee is almost on this ball.
Now all you do is get here, here.
You see that?
And that's where the short shot comes from.
If the club's going 15 miles an hour and your hand's going 12, and then this, you're going
to get this.
Watch.
This is what a lot of people do.
Watch.
They go.
See that?
Because the club comes up.
And they do it, and they don't know that they're doing it because the swing is so short.
They sit there and they go.
See that?
And they go.
And I don't know why they're trying to help it up.
I mean, the thing's got 56 degrees on it, 60 degrees on the club.
I mean, there's guys that went to MIT trying to figure this out, and we're out here messing
it up.
See, as long as, that's it.
Just ride it right on around, like a pony.
Just ride it right on around your waist.
That's it.
Uh-huh.
Take it on around you.
That's it.
See, it's got to go right on around here.
Uh-huh.
When it quits going around here, it's going to go this way, see?
It'll go this way on you.
So you ride it around.
That's it.
When you finish, the club is still behind your hand, right?
The hands will stay in front of, uh, see it?
Now watch.
The hands are still in the same position to where I finished.
I'm not here now.
You notice?
When you hit a shot, hold the club and see where it's at, and I guarantee you, you'll
be here.
And I'm still in this position.
I can actually, watch this.
I can actually hit this ball, hold the position, right?
Watch.
And come right back down and hit another one.
You see that?
What you got is you hold on and you just keep turning.
