'Lifi' for off-grid villages? Wifi from light
Wi-Fi is really important for internet connections, where we get so much information, it's so good for education to be able to connect by Wi-Fi to the internet.
But Wi-Fi takes a lot of energy to transmit, and so it's really hard to get in lots of places in the developing world,
and in fact I think huge numbers of people are without the internet in the developing world because Wi-Fi is so expensive.
What we're developing is a new way of transmitting this Wi-Fi using light beams.
Wi-Fi is transmitted at the moment by radio waves, but what we found is these LEDs you have for lighting,
you can transmit information, the same information that you transmit by Wi-Fi through the light,
and basically this light beam which is coming down, you chop the light beam so fast you can't see it.
So it's still a light beam, you use it for lighting, but you have all the information coming down as well.
So in the room we're sitting in, if these lights are LEDs, we could just be beaming down,
and it's perfect reception here, you get perfect Wi-Fi from the light.
And we're calling it Li-Fi, Li-Fi for light instead of Wi-Fi,
and I think it will transform the information people can get on the computers in the developing world,
and it will be brilliant for education, so your children will be able to access the internet,
look up any topics they want on the internet, using this light-transmitted information direct to their computer,
and I think there will be a tremendous breakthrough maybe in the next five years.
