I went deep into the heart of Preah Sihanouk, Cambodia to experience what locals actually eat for breakfast at the largest food market Sale Market (Phsar Leu Market) in the region.
Restaurants I went to: Ta Khmao Market Heng Lan Restaurant Black Noodles - អាហារដ្ឋាន ហេង ឡាន មីសួរខ្មៅ (Preah Sihanouk, Cambodia) TUBE COFFEE SIHANOUKVILLE Handmade Crispy Buns Made by Chinese Family Kravann Khmer Food Restaurant

Welcome to Cambodia. Today is really
good because there there's a shuttle
that takes us directly into the city.
Oh, there's a shuttle bus to the beach,
too. So, there's a shuttle actually
taking people to the beach. I don't know
how much of a beach day this is, but
that one is going straight to the city,
and that's where the market I want to go
to is. This is nice. It's usually like
you have to just get your own cab.
[Music]
So, I think there's a lot of Chinese in
this city cuz everywhere you look, like
everywhere you look, the signs for
businesses, ads, it's in Chinese. Like,
it's in Cambodian, too. But they're also
in Chinese almost all the signs. I mean,
it's convenient for me, but it's really
interesting.
[Music]
First thing I do when I get to a new
country, especially one that I assume
this is going to be more cash ccentric,
got to get some cash. Luckily, they
dropped me off. It looks like the center
of the city. And it is a thunderstorm
looming. It looks like there's an ATM
right there, which is nice. In the few
minutes it took to get my money, it is
an official downpour right now. At
Starbucks, it is this is a cool little
collectible thing to get whenever you're
travel to. So, this is a like a kiwi
passion fruit drink they have here in
Cambodia.
Oh, a kiwi drink. Little passion fruit
popping bubbles. That's refreshing.
The ring stop. I mean, just as I hope,
the ring comes in very short bursts.
Also, like I was talking about, look,
sign in Chinese.
Sign in Chinese. The Starbucks sign is
in Cambodian English and Chinese on the
bottom. So, I'm going to finish my drink
and get a tuk tuk. Then, we'll head to
the local market. Chinese hot pot,
Chinese restaurant. And these people
have definitely made their way into this
beach town. And by the way, I am in the
little beach town of Seaugville. Of
course, it's known for its beautiful
beaches, and the ship's only docked here
for about seven or eight hours, so I'm
going to make the best of it. And
there's a local market about 2
kilometers from here that I really want
to go to. And of course, when you're in
Southeast Asia, you got to download
Grab. This thing is just so useful. And
right now, going to use it to book me a
tuk tuk. I think that's my tuk tuk right
there for Mike.
Oh, thank you. Thank you. Get little
rainroof flaps right here. These things
have gotten a lot cozier from what I
remember.
I'm starting to smell all the food from
these breakfast vendors. I smell the
fish sauce. It's smelling so good, man.
I can't wait to get this market.
Cambodian food is incredible. Oh man,
it's keeping the rain out. Oh my. Look
at this. It is storming. Luckily, we got
this barrier here. Oh man. Oh, it's
coming. Oh, he doesn't have the barrier.
Well, that's not good. This stuff just
comes off and on like a matter of
minutes. Wow.
Wow.
Yeah, you need to close your drape. Oh
man, you're getting wet.
Maybe this should have been the day I
stayed on the boat. Feels like you
almost need a bowl to get around these
streets.
Wow. Wow.
Yeah, this is gnarly.
[Music]
I had no idea what my plan was going to
be. As I saw the ride was coming to a
close, I was thinking I was looking
around. I was like, is there a
restaurant I can duck into? Everything
was like a block away. Oh man, I did not
I thought this was an open market. Like
goodness is a cover market. By the way,
this is a nice market. Obviously, not a
lot of people here because of the range.
Man, this is a cool market. It's pretty
wide spaces. Oh, I smell Dorian. Oh,
that smells good. Dorian looks awesome.
These cherries look beautiful. You can
hear the rain hitting the roof. This is
definitely one of the most spread out
airy markets I've ever been to. So,
entrance, entrance, entrance, entrance.
And everyone is trapped. There's so much
fruit. This looks so good. Mango sting
luchi. Wow. Oh, these are the biggest
sours ever.
[Music]
Oh, this market is so cool. There's
seafood, there's veg. Look at all this
amazing shellfish at this market.
Shrimp, cocktail, different types of
squid. There's different types of crabs,
ginormous oysters. Of course, you got
the mantis shrimp. All types of fish as
well. This is probably where the where
the restaurants go to get seafood. This
is definitely fresh as you can get.
[Music]
Wow, it's a ginormous squid here. Look
at the difference between this one and
and these ones. You have the poultry and
the meat section over there.
[Music]
All sorts of shellfish.
So, I guess a lot of the seafood just
goes straight to these vendors who are
cooking up a storm here. There's fish,
there's chicken, there's pork. Yeah,
this market is so expansive. It's got
these random food stalls kind of just
tucked away.
[Music]
I think that might be a food court over
yonder. Oh no, these are jewelry shops.
You can buy gold here. You don't see
that every day at a white market. Like
just ton of jewelry. I think this might
be the eating area right here. I see a
lot of stalls. People sitting in
enjoying some rice and noodles. This
looks good. Oh man. Let's Let's get some
of these noodles. Rice looks good.
[Music]
So many ingredients went into this
little bowl. Right on top looks like a
fried crisp, some sprouts, greens, looks
like some pork or liver, fried garlic,
sea onions. Look at this. Yeah, pork
with nice amounts of fat hanging on to
it. Yeah, definitely liver here for
sure. Some inards. Pork inards. Oh my
gosh, this is so awesome. Different
parts of the pork. This is like a like a
either a fish cake or a pork cake. Egg
noodles on the bottom. Oh man, this is
amazing. And wantton inside as well. Oh,
this is so cool. Oh my gosh, these
noodles look and smell incredible. Let
me try this without any uh additional
seasoning first. They also give me a
some sauce. Let's make this for the
wonton with the meat. Oh, look. Soup
with pork coagulated blood inside. This
is turning out to be a pretty fancy
breakfast. It's got a little bit of
everything.
Awesome. That is a sauced up umami
filled meaty bowl of noodles.
Oh yeah. You definitely taste that porky
flavor in each strand. And everyone is
adding stuff to their condiments. So,
I'm going to go ahead and add some, too.
I see people adding chilies. I think
this is probably chilis and vinegar to
these noodles. Rich noodles definitely
need some of that.
Oh, okay. Thank you.
Oh, yeah. Get some chilies in my noodles
as well.
Nice.
There we go.
A little heat. This thing tastes even
better. I like the vinegar actually a
lot. You can add more of that.
This thing really adds so much to the
texture of the noodles.
When you put all these ingredients
together, all sorts of different porky
flavor, different textures. So, I see
people, they're dunking the meat into
the sauce here. Let's do this. Dunk it
in.
Now we're talking.
Oo, kind of tastes like a hoyen sauce.
Very light porky soup. Touch my won into
the sauce, too. The sauce is great.
I love noodles from Cambodia. I really
do feel like Cambodian food don't get
enough love.
But this cuisine has a history of
thousands of years. Look at this pork.
[Music]
Oh, that is a tender, fatty pork. I'm
trying to eat
quickly because they're filling up right
now. A lot of people are coming here for
their noodles.
Can't waste this blood.
Irony. If anybody ever wants to know how
irony tastes like, let them try that
sauce with those noodles. I think that
was about a dollar. Like a little over a
dollar. Walk around and see what I
should eat next.
I'm walking by. I see this gentleman. I
think he's selling barbecue meats over
rice. It smells really, really good. And
he's chopping a meat with such gusto.
Makes me think I should eat here. This
is a thing of beauty. This looks like
soy sauce chicken here. Roast pork here.
Some cucumbers over rice. Now I have a
feeling.
Mhm. Chicken rice. Bomb chicken rice,
too. Oh, that's delicious.
Oh, mom.
I haven't had the meat yet. Our chicken
rice is legit. That thing is just full
of umami. Look at this roast pork. This
guy is just busy like nonstop orders.
Wow. This is some crazy flavor. Roast
pork. First of all, look at the fat in
this. You know that's going to be tender
and juicy. It's a little sweet. It's
smoky. Oh, the flavor combined,
especially combined with the chicken
rice is so incredibly intense.
[Music]
I mean, if you ever wondered your way
into this market in this little town in
Cambodia, I mean, this is delicious.
Look at the chicken. I don't know if
this chicken is going to be dry or not,
but it looks beautiful on the outside.
It's not really dry. It's not juicy
either, but it's got a really nice
flavor. I think this is what they give
me the sauce for.
With the sauce, by the way, this
scallion sauce he gave me is so good.
The rice is a must try on its own. I
think the roast pork that's number one
item here besides the rice. Chicken's
good. Really nice flavor on the chicken.
I'm saving that pork for last though.
And this thing needs no dipping sauce.
Yeah.
Oh, perfect.
These last bits might be the best. Look
at this. Is all fat right here. All fat
and skin.
Oh my gosh.
Oh, I love that so much. Incredible. The
rain has stopped for a bit. I can wonder
outside the market. The only good thing
about being rainy and cloudy, it's not
that hot. Feels pretty good. Yeah, the
market definitely expands to the outer
perimeters. Tons of fruits, vegetables,
meats. There's a noodle place that
seemed really interesting I want to hit
to. It's about a 10-minute walk from
here. I just hope the sky doesn't open
up on me. This is it. This is noodles
I've never seen before.
Oh man, I got the wrong one. So they're
known for their vermicelli, but they're
really known for their black vermicelli.
I mean, this still looks good. So I
asked one with all the meat in here. So
there looks like some chicken, pork,
beef. Pretty much the whole animal
kingdoms in here. Yeah, that guy over
there has the black vermicelli. I don't
know if there's actually a difference in
taste. I just never had black vermicelli
before.
Hey, I found a few strands. This is what
the black Well, just imagine a bowl full
of this. Let's see if I can taste this
and see if it tastes different.
Does taste really unique. It tastes like
I should have communicated better. This
is definitely a loaded bowl of noodles.
On the bottom of the noodles, there's
lemongrass. There's sprouts. The broth
is definitely very light at the same
time. Very porky.
Very, very porky.
A little sweet. very fragrant. Yeah,
there's a lot of pork fat in this.
Definitely feel like I need some vinegar
with chilies. Cut down the richness a
bit. Hot oil. So, uh it's very funny.
The grandmother of the family came by
and she asked if I could speak mandrel,
which I could. And she speaks Mandarin.
She says her kids don't speak any
Mandarin, but grandma does. She referred
to herself as grandma, which is very
nice to hear. And she told me to add a
bunch of stuff into my noodles,
including these uh slices of garlic and
chilies, and also to add it into the
dipping sauce. I think the dipping sauce
is going to be for the meat. Also, I was
going to just go ahead and order another
bowl of black vermicelli cuz I wanted to
taste it. She says it tastes exactly the
same. It just looks different.
[Music]
Oh, this is even better with everything
added.
These rice noodles really soaked up the
broth very quickly. I mean, these are so
flavorful right now.
A little vinegary now. Way more spicy.
Way more garlicky. Just dip the meat in
here.
Chicken's good. Fishcake's good. You got
a couple chunks of blood in here as well
to give it some extra flavor. This is
the raw beef they added.
Tender and delicious. You kind of got to
eat this quick because the rice noodles
will get soggy pretty quickly.
[Music]
As I get to the bottom of this bowl,
look at this. All the ingredients are
down here. The meats, the veg, the
blood. This is the good stuff right
here. Every chopstick full I grab now,
it's just full of different textures and
flavors.
My tongue is on fire. Those garlic
chilies are no joke. It's such a cool
day, you know, relatively cool day. It
actually feels pretty good eating this
with a nice breeze blowing to the
restaurant.
That is borderline cool.
I've never experienced that. I don't
think in Southeast Asia definitely need
a coffee or something after this. I
think in Cambodia it never feels
complete until a bowl of dry noodles and
a bowl of soup noodles. There's some
shepherd's pers in here as well. That's
always has a nice crunch.
Oh man, I feel like I'm in Cambodia.
Grandma was so happy to see a Chinese
person telling me that she came from
China many years ago. Oh, she's so nice.
Luckily, right next door. Oh, yeah.
There's a couple coffee shops. This one
looks nice. Let's go ducking here for a
little bit. This is their signature
coffee.
That tastes really, really good.
It's nice to cool down for a little bit.
Plan my next move. Still hungry, so find
another place to eat. All right, let's
see what this is.
Wow, rice cakes. Looks good. Let's get
some. Okay. Okay.
Okay. I'll take that, too.
Thank you. It's the third time I saw
this lady selling the food. It was at
the restaurant where I was eating the
vermma jelly. So, you know, just figured
I'd get a bunch and uh take it to the
boat and eat it as a snack the next few
days. Looks good. Just walking past this
place. So this is a souall like a it's
got like a crispy meat bun. So a su ball
like it means a crispy bun. Looks
interesting. So this is called a crispy
bun. It just looks like a regular
steamed bun.
Oh, I think they mainly mean like like
flaky.
I mean layered. I think that's what they
mean. It is layered. So it kind of
tastes like a combination between a
quadrant which is like a flour bun and a
pork bun. So you can see the different
layers in this bun.
It's pretty good. The pork is nice. It's
definitely a very layered texture. Look
at that. The texture is definitely
different than a typical pork bun. I
like the texture actually.
Yeah, somebody combined a Chinese flour
bun with a Chinese pork bun. I think one
more place.
Found this local eery. I just want to
sit down with some uh stir fried dishes
and rice while I'm waiting for the food.
Let's try out some of these
these little rice cakes that I got. I
don't even know what half the stuff is.
This looks good, though. This looks like
a coconut rice cake.
[Music]
It's like a coconut roll. It's actually
not bad. Pretty rich inside, but nice
coconuty flavor. Kind of took me by
surprise a little bit with the egg yolk,
but not too bad. Definitely like the
texture of the rice roll. These are the
little sweet rice cakes right here. Oh,
these look good.
M.
That tastes good. Coconuty. A lot of
sesame in this one, too. Sweet. Texture
is good. This will make a great snack.
But this is something I feel like you
got to eat day one. Like you got to
finish it off today cuz rice cakes don't
keep well at all. I eat this for dinner.
This one I ended up giving a lot of it
away. People that look really hungry.
So, I had like 10 of these. I just
shared it with people. But this looks
like banana leaf. Oh, it smells so good.
It smells like a like a Chinese junz.
Wow.
So fragrant. This is definitely all
handmade stuff. Yeah, it's a steamed
rice. It's actually might be a lotus
leaf.
M
a little savory steamed rice and it's so
fragrant. It's got beans inside. I feel
like this one you could go either way.
You can kind of pour some honey onto
this. It'll just be sweet and really
fragrant. This is really good. Oh, I
wish you guys could smell this. It's
such a wonderful fragrance. Yeah. Oh,
this is phenomenal. Save this one for
later when I get myself some syrup. Then
I got some of these. This smells like
lotus leaves. This one smells really
good, too. Doesn't smell as good as the
other one, but it smells good. It smells
more savory. It's another steamed rice
cake.
Just like rice cake with beans inside.
Not bad. I think similar to the other
one. The other one smells better. This
one's definitely more savory. I think
still some syrup on this going be
awesome. I got to eat all these for
dinner.
None of these are going to keep well in
the fridge too long. Perfect. I get some
locally made delicious food and uh
hopefully that grandma can go home
earlier today. All right, my food is
here. This is some traditional Kamar
food here. So, this first dish is the
preserved fish omelette with some
cabbage, green beans, cucumbers. Looks
like beautiful bouncy omelette. Oh, you
can see the fish right on the inside
there.
Oh, that's awesome.
Oh, this is so freaking good. This is an
omelette. Forget cheese and mushrooms.
Give me an omelette with preserved fish.
This is delicious. I guess you're
supposed to eat it with the raw
vegetables.
M.
It does go really well with the raw
vegetables. This omelette is so savory
and rich. Got such delicious salty
flavor from the fish. Like just so much
umami. It's really good with the
vegetables. Like it doesn't even
actually go with rice. It just goes with
vegetables very well. I mean, there's
nothing fishy about it, but I can
definitely taste that umami. I bet it's
going to go really well with my soup.
So, this is like a veggie fish soup that
I got. Inside is kungai. It looks like.
So, it's shepherd's purse inside. A lot
of shepherd's purse, chilies, ginger,
garlic, and these little fish, little
anchovies right here.
Oh, yeah.
Sour, spicy,
garlicky. Just goes really well with the
omelette, too.
And they give you so much veg. This is
one of the best vegetables you can find
anywhere.
So crunchy, nice. We got these little
fishies here.
Watch out for the tiny bones. This was a
phenomenal pairing with the omelette.
Here's my stir fry dish to go with the
rice. This is uh beef with camir spices.
This be looks like it's cooked in a in a
lot of different things. Looks like
basil, peppers. Okay, let's eat it with
the rice.
That is some tender, tender, tender
beef.
[Music]
The beef is tender. It's fragrant.
There's crunchy veg. There's peanuts.
It all goes so good with the soup.
My favorite dish is 100% that omelette.
That omelette is out of this world good.
I saw this dish while I was walking
around too.
Oh man, that's such a good dish. This is
the type of omelette I want to be eating
every single morning. It's such a
well-made omelette, too. Really, really
soft inside. Outside is just perfectly
cooked. Even the edges of it contains a
nice savory preserved fish. I love my
noodle dishes. And when you're in
Cambodia, you got to eat a lot of
noodles. But I think my favorite thing
is just rice with saucy dishes that goes
good with rice. I think it was my last
meal here. I still got so much rice cake
um for dinner. So, I'm pretty sad. But
it was so much fun walking around the
market. That market was so cool. Again,
wow, am I lucky that it was a covered
market. Oh, that would have been a such
a tragedy. Some more tips about um like
at least for me about traveling to
Southeast Asia. First of all, you got to
get your internet covered. This is not a
sponsored video, but download this app
called SY. That's what I did this
morning. got myself about a gig of local
data for about $45 $5 super fast. I've
been using it to get around. You don't
have to deal with a physical SIM card,
which is so nice. Also, usually in
Southeast Asia, I I tried to wear um gem
shirts. I kind of ran out cuz I I worked
out a lot and so I have to go do laundry
today when I get back in the boat. And
plus, it wasn't as hot today, but those
shirts dry very quickly. And for pants
too, like I I usually buy these hiking
pants, like really thin hiking pants
that also dry out very very quickly cuz
you're going to sweat a lot when you
walk around and sometimes you will get
rained on. But today I would have been
really bad cuz this is a cotton shirt
like this would have been very bad. But
that market was awesome. The food there
was incredible. Got to walk around, try
some local coffee which is delicious and
end my day with a savory comforting
meal. As always, I'll place that winter
list down below for you guys. Thank you
all so much for watching. until we eat
again.
