Is your energy bill way higher than it should be? It might be your windows. In this video, Sean from American Window Concepts breaks down how outdated windows are often the weakest link in your home’s energy efficiency — and how you can test yours with simple at-home tricks.
Hey guys, Sean with American Window
Concepts. Are your energy bills being
affected by crappy windows? Let's get
into it.
So, the first thing I would say is this.
Look at your bill, right? I know you're
looking at your bill every single month
as soon as you get it and you're looking
at it and going,
"Man, it's July. This bill is $500. This
is pretty insane."
Now, a lot of this is going to be based
on how big your house is, right? If you
have a two-story house and you have two
AC units, your bill is going to
typically be more expensive than a 1300
ft² house with one single uh AC unit.
Well, what about your insulation? What
about your do you have roof insulation?
Do you have a flat roof or do you have
an actual attic? And do you have
insulation in there? Was the house built
in the 20s and 30s and have actually no
insulation whatsoever? So, these are
different things that I would want you
to look into. But the biggest thing,
your windows. You've heard me say it
before, you'll hear me say it again.
Windows are the weakest link of your
house. when you are at home and it's
extremely hot outside and it feels like
your AC has been running all day long
and it's only 80°, you know, and you
want it to be 70°, right? Where it's
nice and frigid inside and you feel
really, really comfortable, but you
can't achieve that because maybe you
have single pane windows, maybe you have
dual pane windows from the 80s and 90s,
but it's clear glass. There's ways to
tell. One, you can put your hand there
and you can feel if the heat is actually
being pushed through. Same thing for a
cold day. If it's windy outside, you can
see a lot of the times drapes moving,
shades, blinds moving. That ain't a
ghost. It's it's coming from the air,
the wind that's coming through. So, that
is clue number one. Well, let's say
you're not feeling it too too much, but
you're like, man, I don't know. These
windows are made in the 80s. It seems
okay. But what you could do is you light
a candle and you set it on the window
sill and you just watch the flame. Now,
if you see the flame flickering and
moving and all that outside of its
normal glow, it's actually like moving
around. Well, guess what? The other
thing is a smoke test. You can light a
match, let it go, and then the smoke
will actually be pushed by the wind.
There's several little tricks. Now,
whenever you have high energy bills and
the AC's constantly running, probably
need to get rid of those windows and you
need to get into something that is new,
improved, updated, energy efficient.
There's an upfront cost. How expensive
is your energy bill? And how much are
the windows? Right? Let's just say you
want to finance your windows. Okay.
Well, if your window payment is $300 a
month, utility bill is $600 a month. If
you can cut that utility bill in half,
does that not pay for itself to have
brand new windows that are safer, better
looking, give you more value to the
house? I don't know. I'd call that a
clue, too. because eventually you're
going to pay off your windows and that
money is being saved in your own
account. Other thing that is going to be
great is making sure you have attic
insulation and insulation in your walls.
And oh, by the way, make sure you have a
good entry door because entry doors too
can warp and get old and maybe don't
have weather stripping, Q-on weather
stripping, things like that. And well,
you want to have a good entry door that
locks well and closes well and seals
well. Eventually, if you deal with all
these different things, you're going to
have one heck of an energyefficient home
and you're going to feel good. It's
going to be nice inside your house.
Whether it's cold outside, hot outside,
it doesn't matter. It's an investment in
your own house. It only adds value. I
hope this answers your question. All
right, guys. Make it a great day. But
