Take a walk with me to see the beautiful grounds of Smith Hills Hall.
Smith Hills Hall is one of the oldest manor houses in the northwest of England.
Parts of it date back to around 1322,
though the first recorded owner, William Radcliffe, acquired it in 1335.
Originally a 14th-century manor,
Smith Hills Hall underwent significant expansions in the 15th and 19th centuries.
The west wing, added in the Victorian era,
showcases decorative timber framing and coarse stonework.
Smith Hills Hall is a Grade I listed building and a scheduled monument,
recognizing its exceptional architectural and historical significance.
The hall is set within over 2,000 acres of grounds and gardens,
offering visitors scenic views and a glimpse into the estate's historical landscape.
The Ainsworth family owned Smith Hills Hall until 1938, when they sold it to Bolton Corporation.
Parts of the hall were used as a residential home and day centre until the 1990s.
The west wing of Smith Hills Hall was restored by Bolton Council in 1999
and has been undergoing further restoration to return it to its Victorian grandeur.
The waterfall at Smith Hills Hall cascades beneath a charming stone bridge,
creating a peaceful focal point in the estate's Victorian-era woodland gardens.
Smith Hills Hall is renowned for its beautifully maintained gardens,
which include traditional English flower beds, a formal terrace, and peaceful woodland walks.
The gardens are carefully preserved to reflect the historic character of the estate,
offering visitors a serene and picturesque environment to explore year-round.
The grounds also feature mature trees and seasonal blooms, enhancing the hall's timeless charm.
Today, Smith Hills Hall operates as a public heritage site and museum, managed by Bolton
Council. It hosts regular historical exhibitions, family-friendly events, educational tours,

including weddings and community functions,
