Hey guys, this is Emma.
Welcome to Learn Chinese with Emma.
The place to learn authentic, practical, and very fun Mandarin Chinese.
Today, we will learn a very basic but very important sentence,
which is, what's your name?
When we get to know a new person,
we will always want to ask each other's names first, right?
So today, we will learn how to say it in Chinese.
Are you guys ready?
Let's get started.
The common way to ask each other's name in Chinese is,
nǐ means you, jiào means to be called, shénme means what, míngzi means name.
So this sentence literally means, you are called what's name,
or what's your name in English.
Let's repeat it one more time.
The answer for the question is quite simple too.
You can just say, wǒ jiào plus your name.
For example,
wǒ means I, jiào means to be called.
Emma is my English name.
So I can say,
Let's practice one more time.
Of course, you can also say,
for short.
For example, you can say,
Also, I'd like to teach you guys how to ask somebody's last name
when you come across somebody you're not very familiar with,
or it's not your peers and you want to show your respect to.
You can ask like this,
nǐ is the polite way to say nǐ, you.
guì means expensive or honorable, xìng means last name.
So together, it means, what's your honorable last name?
And then that person might say,
My last name is Wang.
Sometimes that person might also say,
mián means no need or get rid of,
guì means honorable as we've already learned,
xìng means last name,
and wáng is a very common Chinese last name.
So mián, guì, xìng, wáng together means no need for the honorable,
and my last name is Wang.
Did you guys get it?
By the way, for any of these questions,
you can start with saying,
together means excuse me or may I ask.
So you can say,
excuse me or may I ask, what's your name?
You can also say,
