Hello and welcome to a new YouTube video.
My name is Natalia and I am your German teacher.
Today we are talking about a very important topic, about connectors.
Why is this so important?
Because we can only form beautiful and coherent sentences with connectors.
So we always need connectors.
This is also important for your next German exam.
But you also sound better in everyday life when you use connectors.
As always, I have collected all the information from this video
in a large PDF file.
It is best to download it now.
This way you can take notes during the video and learn even better.
Click now in the info box or in the pinned comment
on the link and download the file for free.
In the PDF file you will even find exercises that will help you test your knowledge.
You probably know that there are a lot of connectors in German.
For the intermediate level, I have divided them into four groups for you.
Group 1, aber, denn, und, oder.
Group 2, deshalb, sonst, dann, danach.
Group 3, weil, wenn, das.
Group 4, zweiteilige Konnektoren.
I have already explained some of the connectors in this video.
Be sure to take a look at it.
Today we are talking about the third group of connectors on the intermediate level.
Weil, wenn und das.
With this group you can connect a main clause and a subordinate clause.
Do you still know what the special thing about a subordinate clause is?
In a subordinate clause, the verb is at the end.
The verb is at the end of the sentence, as in sentences with these connectors.
Weil, wenn und das.
Don't worry, I'll explain everything to you step by step in simple examples.
Because you understand complicated grammar better
when the examples are simple and you can imagine the situations well.
That's how I do it, by the way, in all my intensive courses.
All my German courses are based on my interactive communicative method.
We practice German with a lot of simple examples
so that you can understand and use the language.
First, I explain the complicated grammar to you in detailed videos
and then you can try out how well you have already understood this topic in the grammar exercises.
Every task is automatically checked and you get feedback immediately.
We also practice your speech in every lesson.
You can also find the links to all intensive courses in the info box.
Let's go!
You learn the connectors weil, wenn and das in the A2 course.
I have put them together for you again in a table
so that you can see the position of the verbs well.
Main clause, subordinate clause, subject, verb, connector, subject, verb.
Let's look at the table.
The cat is lying in Ivana's bed.
Because she likes it warm.
The main clause is at the beginning.
The subordinate clause is at the end.
Ivana gets angry when the cat is lying in her bed.
Ivana gets angry when.
When introduces the subordinate clause.
And the third example.
Ivana's cat knows exactly that she is not allowed to go to bed.
With these connectors, a main clause comes first.
The verb is in the main clause, quite normal, at position 2.
Then comes the subordinate clause.
It starts with a connector.
Then the subject follows and the verb is at the very end.
There is always a comma between the main clause and the subordinate clause.
Please don't forget.
It's a mistake if you don't write a comma there.
Let's take a closer look at the three connectors.
Because.
With the connector because you describe the reason.
Because, reason.
Why?
For what reason is the cat lying in Ivana's bed?
Because she likes to be warm.
So because is a synonym for because.
You may already know this connector from my first video.
So you could also say, because she likes to be warm.
Be sure to pay attention to the position of the verbs here, because otherwise your sentences are wrong.
There are two different connectors and the verbs are in different positions.
With the connector when you describe a condition.
Condition.
When.
When does Ivana get angry?
Under what condition?
What has to happen for Ivana to get angry?
Ivana gets angry when the cat lies in her bed.
Under this condition.
You can also say, when the cat lies in Ivana's bed, then she gets angry.
Here you first describe a condition and then the consequence.
Condition plus consequence.
You can decide for yourself whether you start the sentence with when or whether you say the main sentence first.
And the third connector, that.
The connector that is like a laying egg, wool milk sow.
What are you asking yourself?
Yes, you heard right.
In the German language there is a sow, i.e. a female pig that gives milk and wool and also lays eggs.
Of course there is no such animal.
But you use it to describe humorous things that have very different functions.
So that's a very funny expression.
You can also remember that.
You can also find the expression in the PDF file.
So it is also with the connector that.
It connects a lot of different sentences with each other.
The connector that can be used in many situations.
These sentences are really used very often.
They show what someone thinks, says, hears, feels and connect longer statements with each other.
Like here.
Ivana's cat knows exactly that she is not allowed to go to bed.
These sentences are often used according to certain verbs.
For example, I have the most important ones here for you.
You can of course also find them in the PDF file.
So make sure to download them.
Say.
I say.
What?
I say that I am tired.
Or think.
He thinks the exam is difficult.
Or believe.
We believe that you are right.
Know.
I know that she is sick.
Mean.
She means that German is fun.
Hear.
I hear that he speaks German.
See.
We see that the bus is coming.
Hope.
I hope you have time.
Find.
He thinks the food is delicious.
Be sure to think of the comma in front of the that with two S.
So in front of the connector that.
And of course to the position of the verb in the subordinate clause.
I have the verbs in the subordinate clauses marked for you so that you can see that the verb is at the end.
You should know the connectors from this group very well at the end of the A2 course and in the best case you can use them yourself.
If you want to take a closer look at which situations you can use which connector and which position the verb is in, then take a look at the infobox below this video.
There you will find the link to a large PDF file.
In this file I have summarized the most important things about the connectors from this video for you.
