What is hidden behind the mysterious structures of antiquity?
Megaliths are mysterious structures made of huge stone blocks,
which surprise with their scale and mysterious purpose.
Where did they come from and what role did they play in the lives of ancient people?
In this video, I will tell you about the most famous megaliths,
Menghirs, Dolmens and Kramleks, and reveal their mystical secrets.
In the south of England, on the Salisbury Plain,
the legendary Stonehenge rises,
one of the most mysterious megalithic structures in the world.
Built about 4,000 years BC,
this circle of huge stones up to 6 meters high and weighing up to 50 tons
still does not reveal its secrets.
What was it created for?
Some believe that this is an ancient temple to worship the sun,
others believe that the Stonehenge was used as an observatory
or a place for the rituals of druids.
There are even theories about its extraterrestrial origin.
The structure itself consists of 30 huge stones and triliths,
an arch of three stones surrounded by smaller blocks.
The material of these megaliths is sarsen stone,
which is rare for this area.
Next to the Stonehenge are other archaeological sites.
Woodhenge, its wooden brother, and the Silbury Hill mound,
one of the largest in Europe.
All of them together create a unique complex
that attracts the attention of tourists and researchers.
Since 1896, Stonehenge has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site
and receives more than a million visitors each year.
It is easy to get to this mysterious place.
Just 2 hours and 40 minutes by bus from London,
and you can see this wonder with your own eyes.
Do you want to discover the secrets of the ancient world?
Stonehenge is waiting for you!
High in the Andes, 70 km from La Paz,
are the mysterious ruins of Pumapunku,
one of the most mysterious places on Earth.
These megalithic blocks are striking in their size.
Each weighs more than 100 tons and reaches 8 meters in length.
The granite blocks, which seem to be scattered along the desert plateau,
create a feeling that something incredible happened here once.
Archaeologists still argue about how and why these structures were built,
and even when exactly this happened.
Some believe that Pumapunku was created about 2,000 years ago,
and others, based on the studies of the starry sky,
claim that this ruin may be up to 17,000 years old.
But the main thing that amazes is the construction technology itself.
Perfectly even blocks with straight corners and through holes raise questions.
How could ancient people create such a thing using primitive tools?
Some believe that it was done using technologies that we do not yet understand,
perhaps even using alien technologies.
Imagine how these massive blocks moved at an altitude of 3,600 meters
without forests and complex mechanisms.
Perhaps it was antigravity or mysterious mechanisms that we can only guess about.
And next to Pumapunku is Tiwanaku, an ancient city,
the center of a once great civilization,
where you can still see the Gate of the Sun with the image of the creator god Viracochi.
Locals claim that these megaliths were not built by people,
but by gods one night after the Great Flood.
So who were these mysterious builders?
Perhaps they were aliens.
The answers are still hidden behind the centuries-old veil of time.
Saqsaywaman is an architectural miracle of Peru,
located just 2 kilometers from Cusco.
This complex, despite its half-destroyed state, is striking in its scope.
It consists of three rows of zigzag-shaped walls,
the length of which reaches from 200 to 400 meters,
and the height is up to 8 meters.
But the main thing is the huge Andesite boulders,
from which the walls are made.
They are all fitted to each other with incredible accuracy.
You can't even insert a blade between them.
Scientists still argue how the walls of Saqsaywaman were built.
After all, the Incas did not have modern technologies
for processing and moving such massive stones.
Some researchers assume that this complex was built long before the Incas appeared
and used lost knowledge and ancient technology for this.
Another mystery of Saqsaywaman, its purpose.
The version about the fortress raises doubts,
because the building is not protected on one side.
Perhaps it was a temple complex or the residence of the ruler,
where knowledge dwelt in the towers,
and ammunition was stored in the underground rooms.
Unfortunately, the towers and part of the walls were dismantled by the conquistadors.
By the way, these are Spanish and Portuguese conquerors of the 15th-17th centuries,
who conquered new lands in America and other regions.
They are known for conquering civilizations, such as the Aztecs and the Incas,
for the sake of gold and glory.
Since 1983, Saqsaywaman is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
For the inhabitants of Peru, it is not just a historical place,
but a sacred center, where every year on June 24
they celebrate Inti Raymi, the holiday of the sun,
which gathers many spectators and glorifies the god of the sun Inti.
Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is located in the southeast part of the Pacific Ocean,
3,600 km from the coast of South America.
This isolated corner was opened by the Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen
on Easter Sunday in 1722, which gave it its modern name.
For centuries, the islanders lived in complete isolation, developing a unique culture.
Rapa Nui became world famous thanks to the Ma'ai, a giant statue,
which was created by local craftsmen from the 10th to the 16th centuries.
These stone spires stand on ritual platforms,
the highest of which reaches 24 meters and weighs more than 80 tons.
Some statues have headdresses made of red stone,
which add grandeur and mystery to them.
Local legends claim that the magic power of the ancestors
and the first leader of the island, Khotu Matua, is enclosed in the Ma'ai.
The statues were found in the quarries located in the center of the island.
You can still see the unfinished Ma'ai there,
as if the work on them was suddenly interrupted.
But the biggest mystery is how these giant figures moved around the island.
Scientists still have not come to a single opinion
on the methods of transporting these colossi.
Today, Easter Island is guarded by the Rapa Nui National Park,
which occupies almost half of the island's territory.
Since 1995, the park is on the UNESCO World Heritage List,
protecting the unique cultural landscape and ancient relics for future generations.
Baalbek in Lebanon is one of the most impressive places in the Middle East,
where you can still see ancient megaliths.
On this archaeological site there are three huge stone blocks,
each of which weighs about 750 tons.
The Romans used them as a base for the Temple of Jupiter.
These blocks are striking not only for their size,
but also for the fact that their surfaces are perfectly treated.
They are raised to a height of 8 meters and lie on blocks of slightly smaller size.
But the southern stone, located 500 meters from the Temple of Jupiter,
Its weight is about 1050 tons,
and it is considered the largest processed stone in Baalbek.
Its size is impressive.
Modern engineers assume that only the most powerful cranes
on the caterpillar course could lift and move such a massif,
even if there was a good road.
Can you imagine? The question remains open.
What kind of technology and knowledge did the ancient builders of Baalbek have
to move and install such colossal stone blocks?
This mystery continues to worry the minds of scientists and researchers from all over the world.
At the end of the last century, archaeological work under the Temple Mountain in Jerusalem
brought amazing discoveries.
Researchers found the remains of megalithic structures,
which became part of the southern foundation of the western wall of the ancient Temple of Solomon.
This masonry was hidden by the ground for millennia
and became available for viewing only since 1996,
when the tunnel of the western wall, about 500 meters long, was opened.
It passes from Via Dolorosa Street to the Wilson Arch.
In this tunnel, four huge stone blocks were exposed.
Like the giant block in Baalbek, they are laid on smaller stones.
These huge monoliths were brought from the quarry,
located in western Jerusalem.
The question of how exactly the ancient builders moved
and laid such massive stones remains a mystery.
Archaeologists and engineers are still puzzled
as to what technologies could the builders have
to cope with the tasks that today would require the most powerful modern mechanisms.
In the city of Aksum, located in Ethiopia, not far from the shores of the Red Sea,
there are mysterious basalt walls.
These monumental obelisks amaze with their size and skill of execution.
The tallest of them reaches 33.5 meters
and weighs about 500 tons.
Other obelisks, smaller in size,
vary from 20 to 24 meters.
Their carefully processed surfaces are decorated with intricate ornaments
that give the stones special significance and mystery.
Many obelisks lie in disarray, and some are destroyed.
Local legends tell of giant cyclops,
which allegedly had the ability to melt stones.
According to the legend, these giants poured the melted mass into molds,
and then rubbed and polished the frozen blocks to perfect smoothness.
Excavations in Aksum have shown that earlier these steles stood on pedestals.
One of these pedestals was a three-tier platform
made of massive basalt slabs,
and was located under the BT Georgis hill.
The stone for these colossi was mined in quarries,
located just a few kilometers from the site.
The fact that ancient builders were able to transport and install such heavy monuments
is still one of the greatest secrets of architecture and engineering of the ancient world.
Pyramids and megalithic structures,
the origin and age of which are still a mystery,
can be found in different parts of the world.
For example, they are located at the bottom of the Bahamian Bank,
near the islands of Andros and Demini,
on the island of Panape and 92 artificial islands of Nan Madol,
as well as in the shallow waters of the archipelago of the Carolinian Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
In the United States, similar structures are found at the bottom of Lake Rock in Wisconsin,
as well as at the bottom of the sea near the Japanese island of Yonaguni.
It is the finds near the coast of Yonaguni that arouse special interest,
because there, at a depth of 6 meters,
huge stone blocks with clear lines were found.
For the first time, they were discovered in 1995 by the Japanese aqualungist Aratake.
He reported about his discovery to the sea seismologist Kimura from the University of Okinawa.
The scientist devoted 10 years to studying these underwater structures
and came to the conclusion that in front of him are the remains of a sunken prehistoric city.
In 1997, a group of researchers led by Hancock conducted underwater filming,
and a professor of geology from the University of Boston confirmed
that the blocks near the coast of Yonaguni really have an artificial origin.
Zorats Karer, which means in Armenian stone army,
is an ancient megalith located at an altitude of 1,770 meters
on a mountain plateau in the Sinyuk region of Armenia,
just 3 kilometers from the city of Sisyan.
This mysterious structure has a second name, Karaunj, or singing stones.
This complex contains numerous vertically standing stones,
some of which have round holes in the upper part.
The age of this place is still not established exactly,
it is estimated from 4,000 to 7,700 years.
In 2009, Zorats Karer was declared a historical-cultural reserve.
Zorats Karer is a field covered with stone slabs.
In total, there are 223 andesite or basalt slabs weighing up to 8.5 tons
and 1.5 to 2.8 meters long.
Some stones are built in a not too flat row,
stretching from the southeast to the northwest.
In the center of the row is an oval of stones,
on the sides of which you can see passages and corridors.
Next to this place there is a stone box,
which supposedly served as a tomb.
A special mystery is represented by 80 stones with holes
with a diameter of 40-50 mm, which are made in the upper part.
The holes look rough and in some cases are curved at an angle,
which indicates a conical drilling on both sides.
Inside the holes, the stone has been preserved better
than on the surface of the monoliths themselves.
Today there are 37 standing stones with 47 holes,
which makes Zorats Karer one of the most interesting
and mysterious ancient structures.
These amazing structures of the past
contain many mysteries,
which still cause disputes among scientists and historians.
Who and how was able to build such colossal buildings
without modern technologies?
We can only assume and try to decipher
the hidden messages of these megaliths.
But maybe one day we will be able to unravel the secrets
that they have been keeping for thousands of years.
