hey folks how you guys doing hope you're
all having a great day and welcome to
the new shop this entire video is about
the structure of the new of the new shop
what we have to work with and some of
the plans that I have going forward as
you can tell may or may not be able to
see I'm sweating it is hot in here and
the air conditioner conveniently just
went out so anyway let me back up the
camera and give you a nice wide angle
and show you as much as I can in one
particular camera angle of the new shop
as you can tell the entire shop is in
disarray I basically just moved all my
stuff over here it's been a very chaotic
situation trying to get everything moved
for the house trying to get all of the
shop out of the old building or out of
the old garage and into here and getting
that house ready to sell so that house
sale has been my number one priority for
the past few weeks and now I can finally
shift gears to this space before I set
up this space I'm gonna do a little bit
of renovation so just to give you a
sense of bearing I guess the entry door
is over here in relation to the camera
I'll show you that in just a second then
I have two big roll-up doors on the
front of the shop which is over here and
I'll show you those in just a second and
in this direction left and right is 30
feet and in this direction front to back
is 40 feet the ceiling is about nine and
a half feet the floor joists for the
upstairs loft the top of the floor joist
is exactly 10 feet from the ground so
I've got about nine and a half feet up
into the ceiling which you may or may
not be able to see I guess you can see
it right yeah I guess you can see it
that is like old corrugated tin that was
pulled off of a barn of some kind it
looks pretty cool and there's a lot of
fluorescent lights in here but the
lighting situation is acceptable right
now to get going but that is one thing
that while definetly upgrade and switch
out to some really nice LED lights from
American green lights that I had in my
previous shop
those are fantastic for video work and
not only video work but being able to
really see in a in a good amount of CRI
color rendering index so you can
actually see accurate colors with those
lights so that's going to be an upgrade
coming down the road
I feel like this camera angle is just
swallowing me so let me let me just walk
you around the perimeter real quick of
the Interior and talk about some of the
renovations that were about to get
started on the previous camera angle
that the camera was right in this corner
facing the other corner so this is the
only man door entering the building and
I've got my electrical panel over here
which has plenty of room to expand which
is really nice again the roll-up doors
are on my left but as soon as I walk
into the well soon as I walk into the
shop the plan is to have all of my
office stuff on this wall now speaking
of the plan this like I said is a pole
barn structure so for every every ten
feet there is a six by six post and on
the other side of the posts covered up
by this pegboard which is going to be
which is gonna be removed are some
horizontal two by fours that the
exterior metal siding or metal tin is
attached to so that's kind of how these
structures are built what I'm going to
have done and help myself I'm going to
hire some contractors to help me do a
lot of the work but honestly they're
gonna be the majority of the work I'm
going to stud this in frame it in like a
traditional you know 16 on center wall
insulate it and I'm going to put 3/4
inch plywood all all the way through the
walls I had originally planned for t 111
siding but so many people pretty much
talked me out of it because of all of
the the texture that's on t 111 siding
and it just it's a magnet for dust and
anyway we're gonna go with a smooth
faced plywood all the way through the
shop that's gonna be nice so increasing
the insulation and having a
three-quarter inch sheet that I could
basically screw anything to anywhere
that's going to be really nice the offer
we'll start somewhere right here and
continue all the way down one of the
coolest upgrades for me anyway out here
in the shop I don't have running water
but the people who purchased our last
home did not negotiate the refrigerator
so I grabbed the refrigerator and it's
gonna go probably right next to this
door so it's gonna be full of water and
you know beverages and such but yeah let
me keep moving you down this wall as I
said all of my office stuff will be
along this wall
very convenient to the door right when I
walk in and everything that I built in
the last office has come back except
that big table for the dog bed I I may
or may not assemble that again in here
because it was primarily made for a dog
bed so I'm not exactly sure one thing
you will notice right here on the wall
is compressed air piping the previous
owner built this shop a few years back I
don't know exactly when it was built but
this structure is no more than five
years old if I go to Google Maps on the
Street View I think that was in 2014 and
the shop is not there and if I go into
the top down satellite view well I mean
it's obviously here now so sometime
newer than 2014 and and I think I was
told the exact date I know I was when we
purchased the home but I can't seem to
remember it so anyway the previous guy
who who built this shop was a car guy he
restored classic cars and he had a large
air compressor outside of the lean-to
and he ran piping for this compressed
air system he's got a couple different
regulators and drip systems to get the
moisture out I really do not use
compressed air it's kind of cool to have
it here in the shop but I'm probably
just going to either cover it up with
insulation and leave it or tear it down
one of the two I just don't use
compressed air and when I do I've got a
small little quiet compressor that fills
all my needs so that's that you'll see
these the compressed air lines
throughout the shop I do have some
electrical that I'm going to keep that
every one of the 6x6
hosts has a receptacle on it on both
sides of the shop as well as one in the
back of the shop so it's pretty
well-equipped for 120 volt electricity
there are a couple 240 volt circuits but
I'm going to expand upon the 240 volt
circuits I think what I have on the
walls is plenty acceptable right now for
all of my needs and I know a lot of
people are gonna say well they're ten
feet apart you should add more and I
don't think so because ten feet apart
for a receptacle isn't that bad
especially when a lot of the clusters
are probably going to be using like one
of those I use those heavy-duty power
strips you know to get like six more
feet of of wire before the power strip
not only that but I've come to really
really appreciate those retractable cord
reels that come out of the ceiling or
that mount to the ceiling I should say
and I'm gonna have a few of those here
in the middle of the shop so I think I'm
pretty well set up with 120 volt
electricity I will like I said add some
for 240 but that's not gonna be done
until after the tools are placed because
all of that will be a conduit run and
drop from the ceiling that's the plan
anyway
let's see this camera angle goes back to
the corner and here you can kind of see
that lighting is good to work in here
but it's not the greatest as far as
recording because it gets awfully dark
on this back wall so let me move the
camera towards the back wall and we'll
proceed over there the back wall there's
two main features on the back wall
number one as you can obviously tell
there's a stairs and I was trying to
think of some like stairway to heaven
joke but I got nothing so this goes up
to the loft and the loft is a 12 by 20
floor basically pure storage now my
initial plan plan a was to use the loft
as storage just as it was intended to be
used just as the previous owner used it
and keep everything down here that way
everything's you know on one floor on
one level and long-term storage is up
and out of the way plan B after my good
friend Jeremy was here helping me move
Phin he said you know what you should
box that in insulate it and turn it into
an office and I thought that would be
great because it takes all of my office
gets it off the floor level even more
room to work I tried to plan for that to
come to fruition and and that was one of
the goals of Plan B I guess but there's
there's just too many issues as far as
venting the attic and you know heat
rises anyway it's crazy hot in the
summer time and even with insulation I
just I just don't want to deal with that
whole situation up there there's too
many different little bugs that's
stopping me from doing that so I've
reverted back to plan a which is to keep
the office down here like I said and use
that as storage which is still fine
there's plenty of space here I know as
soon as you say that you fill up the
space that you have but anyway the
stairs are gonna stay I will build some
type of trap door insulated trap door
that opens up on a hinge like this I
guess you could say so there's basically
an insulated ceiling right at the top of
the stairs to keep the climate control
down here speaking of climate control
right there that's the preview that is
the obviously the unit that's installed
it is a forced air HVAC unit heating and
cooling that it was repurposed it was
originally installed in an elementary
school as what I was told or some type
of school and it's a huge unit I don't
know what size it is because all of the
markings it looks like it was all
painted on the outside so there's really
not that much information on it when I
first moved into the shop all my stuff a
week or two ago something like that it
would turn on it I'm sorry I would not
turn on so I contacted a local friend of
mine HVAC guy the star capacitor was
gone or bad and there was little to no
freon or coolant in the system so
changed out the start capacitor and put
more gas in it and it cooled just fine
absolutely
vicked but the whole like no no freon or
fluid in the coolant in the system is
kind of alarming which means it's
probably going to leak out and then
about two days after it was cooling just
fine the compressor something around the
compressor shorted out and it's it's
basically a money pit I'm not going to
keep with this system not only am I not
going to keep up with the system but I
want to talk about our but basically
mentioned that this one right here this
is the exhaust so the cool air coming
into the shop right here I'm looking at
a monitor sorry that looks weird and
then this one is the air return so
there's about the air filters at these
are two inches apart that is way too
close way too close so this is coming
out I'll probably have to purchase
another piece of exterior metal steel to
go on the outside to cover all that the
holes that were cut so it looks seamless
on the outside and then I'm gonna go
with a mini split system to cool all
this and who I don't know if you can see
but I'm just draining sweat it is so hot
in here yeah let me at least show you
the loft space upstairs as we go up the
stairs I've already put some stuff up
here but the light switch is back here
so hey mr. snowman I forgot to put you
up here there's a decent amount of
storage up here decent amount of space
twelve feet left and right and 20 feet
from that corner to that corner I'm
short so these trusses and lights I can
walk on during no problem most of my
friends can't but it was an idea to like
I said close all this in insulate it put
another mini split up here and make this
my office but too many too many issues
and and that's that so why does the loft
not go all the way across well that was
one of the regrets that the original
owner had
he only wanted to pay for enough wine I
say pay he only wanted to build out the
loft half of the total length of it and
therefore the doubled up trusses or the
16 on center trusses over here aren't
aren't continuous because after here
goes - I think that's 4 feet on center
the trusses go back but anyway this is
just the ceiling that was down below I'm
going to once I get all the electrical
done below fill all of this with
insulation and it'll be nice and tidy so
there's a plan with that and I got to
get out of here because it is smoking
hot up here there's a nice view of the
shop it's a it's crazy how when I had
all this stuff in my last shop it was
all efficiently clustered and in this
shop it looks like it's taking up so
much space partially because all the
miter saw station is not assembled and
all the drawers are scattered but anyway
this shop if you're curious is exactly
three times the square feet of the last
shop and it's still hot up here so let
me get back to the ground level I've got
the camera kind of high because there's
so much crap in the way or so much stuff
in the way you kind of can't see this
entire wall is going to be the materials
wall so all the way down there is right
as you come into the big big roll-up
doors is going to be the material
storage plywood and wood for upcoming
stuff and then right after that is going
to be right here somewhere the miter saw
station and though it's going that's
going to be basically right below this
window so let me let me bring you around
I guess a little bit and I'll talk about
these windows because there's a little
bit of store
oh also really quick I will say that
sweating I will say that all the tools
all the major machines most of the major
machines we we lifted up onto my trailer
with one of these two-ton engine cranes
this was one of the most valuable
purchases I made when it comes to this
larger machineries a large machinery
moving and I'll make a separate video
and actually moving all the stuff
because I I think that's somewhat
interesting learning with the camera
again alright so the neighbors got a dog
right there I don't know if that's
picking up on the audio not the end of
the world neighbors here are fantastic
so I don't really care about that I
can't think with that dog barking it'll
be ok though so the this we're back at
the front door we were we were just
showing I was just showing you that wall
on that side so we're just coming back
over here these are two pretty nice
roll-up doors they work really well the
problem with them though is they're not
insulated and the exterior of these
doors is painted Brown well what happens
is the Sun comes up at about I'd say
about the twenty degree off of the front
face right there so these these doors do
get some sunlight and they bake so it's
okay to just leave them and use them for
right now but I really want to get some
type of insulated door solution here to
reduce the amount of heat coming into
the shop from the Sun so that's that
this is pretty much on a an onion I
can't talk today an uninteresting side
of the shop oh it's hot and back at the
door so alright doggy
oh speaking of noise so the dogs barking
ramp reminds me of noise the dust
collector we're looking at the corner
where we come into the shop if I spin
you 180 degrees around
try not to get busy and this corner over
here the far back corner that's where
the dust collection system is going to
go and I've been talking with the fine
folks at clear Vue cyclones and we've
designed some type we've designed a
sound-deadening closet for it to go into
now I'm not entirely sure if I'm going
to go that route or not I'm gonna get
the whole system up and running get
everything going and figure out how much
noise it's actually making if it is a
nuisance to the neighbors or not if if
the neighbors are cool with it that
doesn't bother them at all I'm probably
leaning towards not building it right
away and maybe down the road building it
once I can get some stuff going here in
the shop because I really want to get
back to making projects I know the shop
build is interesting to a lot of people
but that's that's in the cards too to
make a sound dampening closet for the
dust collector
it's getting hot let me take you outside
and show you the lean-to area because
that has a little bit of potential for
the business as well and my wife's
walking the dogs and that's incredibly
distracting so let's just go out there
alright coming out of the shop I have
this area right here that is a storm
shelter so I live in Mississippi and
unfortunately Mississippi has tornadoes
this is something that it's one of those
things that I'd rather have and not need
then need and not have so it's a pretty
pretty nice reinforced structure oh
that's heavy
oh that was loud sorry just a hollow
area to escape tornado is basically
there's electricity in here so you can
tell whether or not the power has been
knocked out or not so just a basic basic
structure storm shelter again something
that I'd rather have and not need than
need to not have it does not touch the
wall over here so I can actually get in
here and walk all the way through to the
other side without my shoulders actually
hitting anything but I currently have
some slabs sitting here a nice piece of
hickory pecan and Osage orange anyway
let me back up and show you this side of
the shop completely so the storm shelter
kind of splits the two and it's
convenient because it splits this back
here to hide all of my lawn equipment
which I have yet to organize I want to
build some type of nice organizational
system for all of this to get it all off
the floor that's in the cards and also
something else that's convenient about
this storm shelter is I still don't lose
ground floor as far as storage because I
can use the top of it for storage and
there is about I don't know a three and
a half four feet high over here and down
to about two ish two feet over here
something like that but it allows some
opportunity for storage above it which
the previous owner left some stuff on it
some just random stuff but I was
thinking about building some type of
floor joist system right above it and
put it some type of decking on top for
basically doubling up the storage so if
I use a two by six as joists and then
decking on top and it gives me a lot of
cubbies to like throw rakes in and
long-handled stuff and still use another
layer on top of that for storage but
anyway lots of options over there
and I've got some hooks over here for a
hammock
old hammock won't fit I'm definitely
gonna get a hammock and just chill out
here some nights it's gonna be a lot of
fun oh man is hot if I said it's hot yet
let me put you back on the tripod I know
this video is probably getting long so
just to recap everything that I've got
going on as far as the renovation before
I can actually start building in here
all the walls are going to be studded 16
inches on Center they're going to be
insulated on top dog barking on top of
that is going to be smooth panel 3/4
inch sheet goods most likely just some
plywood and that'll allow me to hang
anything anywhere I do also I am going
to replace these lights with some nice
LED lights that are that have a high CRI
color rendering index so it's nice and
crisp and clear you can really see
what's going on I also am going to add
some more electricity in the center of
the shop coming down from the ceiling
very strategically though I'll make a
separate video specifically on tool
placement workflow all that stuff
something that people have been asking
me to do for a very long time finally
have a perfect excuse to make that
particular video the fan is going to
stay the winners are going to stay but
they're probably going to be tinted
quite a bit this air conditioner in the
back it is gone it's gonna come out and
a cooling mini-split system is gonna go
in that I cannot wait for because it's
hot it's really hot in here the loft
upstairs is going to remain as a storage
loft and I will build an insulated trap
door of folding horizontal door to allow
me access to go up and still keep the
climate down in here what else oh
there's a lot going on in the shop so I
want to install a security system in
here that's something that I've been
looking forward to for a while something
that I can be in the house and look at
my phone or whatever device and visually
see what's going on in here in the shop
give me a little bit of peace of mind
that's going to be very beneficial for
me I'm rambling I think I've got some
other stuff
come here Skeeter come here Skeeter boy
my dog just ran in here come here come
here come on it's okay it's my little
one-eyed Skeeter he's only got one eye
say hello he doesn't care hello good boy
Oh what else office is staying down here
oh I want to eventually do insulated or
install insulated garage doors of some
kind preferably with windows in them so
I could see out that would be really
cool I think that's it it's hot I'm
gonna cut this video off you guys take
care have a great day
and I'll catch you in the next episode
of this shop build series not exactly
sure what the next steps oh it's gonna
be so you guys take care have a great
day oh it's probably gonna be moving all
the tools and stuff into this shop
because that was pretty interesting
you guys take care have a great day and
I'll talk to you later when it's cooler
