Robert Downey Jr., The Judge.
Robert, what I really loved about this movie is that the title obviously refers to the legal aspect,
but it's the family relationship, about how much we're judged by our family and how much we seek that approval.
Can you talk a little bit about that aspect as a producer of the movie as well?
Blam!
Robert Downey Jr. is the highest paid actor in the world.
How Trouble Paz led to the greatest third act in Hollywood history.
You see your life that way?
This is quite amazing.
I'm going through these, it's like a three act play.
I'm in the third act now.
There may be four or five acts.
Honestly, I see it as, it's this odd thing because everybody's life,
there's the story of their lives and it's true,
but it's still, it's an interesting cover for a magazine I like to read.
And if sometimes I got to be that guy in the cover, you know,
you never really read something that sums up the arc of your life in a sentence that sells,
that you go, oh, it's not who I am.
If you had a more troubled past, I mean, just imagine.
You know what I mean?
You never really got in trouble.
Well, you got out of it easier than others.
Yeah.
Why does some, why did you get in and other guys didn't at Hollywood?
I mean, I know guys that, wow.
You know, I mean, it's an important question, I think.
I...
And perhaps helpful to people if they understand.
I think I've always had a pretty good work ethic and I also, I believe that,
and Lord Attenborough told me this 20 years ago.
Dickie, who passed away recently, he said, you know,
when you find your ambition, all this stuff will clear up.
Now it's never that simple.
When you find your ambition.
My ambition, yeah.
So when you stop thinking about yourself as someone who's on the outside
and you start really seeing what's possible for me, what could I do?
How could I put these jabs together and maybe get a shot at the title?
That's, that's when he thought all this other stuff would clear away.
...co-protagonist Robert Duvall, the director David Dopkin and the producer David Gambino.
He's an asshole.
I just love characters who don't try to do the right thing and then they have to.
You know, The Judge reminds me of that ongoing quest of like,
wow, can I make, can I make great movies that will entertain people?
New cinema.
It is so great to be in Rome and the fans are amazing and I think people so appreciate cinema here
and The Judge is the kind of movie that I know a discerning audience will enjoy.
I have to ask you, Iron Man 4, yes or no?
Oh, I'm going to keep my mouth shut.
You know, we, what we usually get to do is walk around the Spanish steps, do a little shopping.
Everybody wants something from, from Rome and the food is amazing.
I really, if I wasn't tired at night, I would just go and walk the streets at night, you know?
Yes.
Ciao, spettaculari.
About to sell some more soap.
Jake stole that hat.
This hat?
It's a silly hat.
No, we like to take some back home stuff.
Have you ever taken any back home stuff?
Well, I don't know that I give it away.
I'm sure I've given a lot of stuff away.
Like, you know, Snow and I have got some, I have some home stuff.
But I can tell you this, on the last Avengers, me and my friend,
over there, there's this scene where there's an A that's probably 30 feet tall
and I'm looking at it and I'm looking at you and I go,
I need that in my office in Venice.
The problem is, is it true that even after you'd worked with Robert, was it two times?
You still didn't recognize him?
Well, he's cleaned up, he looks great now.
The judge, the judge, Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall.
And it's out tonight, ladies and gentlemen.
Oh, boy. What are you doing here?
If you want to know, we're telling you.
There'll be a late showing, there'll be a late showing.
Now, the reviews in the States have been amazing, so congratulations for that.
And you are both brilliant in this.
And audiences are really kind of connected with this story.
Yeah, people are, it's just kind of about all of us and where you're from
and strained relationships and making amends.
But it's a very entertaining look at it.
So it's not like one of those bummers where you kind of go,
why did I just spend money to go be depressed?
It's a little, it's uplifting.
Terrific writing, a very smart script, that guy.
So you're the father who's the judge, and then you come back to town.
Yes, and I'm a lawyer.
This is where we just tell them some of the stories.
Well, as it happens, mom passes away.
I don't want to go home because I don't want to deal with him.
I don't particularly want to deal with him either.
That's right. So it's that kind of party.
And then something happens where I wind up having to stay in town to defend him,
but he doesn't want me to defend him,
but the guy he hires really shouldn't be defending him.
And double congratulations, of course,
this film is the first production from Team Downey.
Yeah.
Yep.
Great team.
She's fantastic.
She co-produced the Sherlock Holmes movie, didn't she?
She sends her regards.
And having another baby.
Yeah, another one.
Another Team Downey production.
Yes.
And when is this?
That one I had much less to do with than the movie.
I was only involved for about seven minutes.
Oh.
I think you had some involvement, though.
Thank you. Not bad, huh?
You know it's a girl already, don't you?
Oh, you?
Yeah.
You've had a preview.
Yes. Amazing technology these days.
Have you ever watched yourself in a movie
this many times as this?
I'm fascinated with my own image.
But, I mean, most actors hate...
I just look at it and I go,
how did he get so damn good?
Can we hire this guy?
Oh, it's me!
Okay.
Can we afford him?
The award goes to my friend, Robert Duvall.
