Be it a male or a female Shih Tzu, both of them are super cute and adorable dogs. However, there are a few notable differences that you should know before selecting one. So in today's video, we compare Male and Female Shih Tzu and find out which one is better for you!
Male vs. Female Shih Tzu
Whether you bring home a male or a female Shih Tzu, you will get a complete package of love, affection,
loyalty, and playfulness. These dogs have enormous hearts to go with those stellar good looks.
However, there are some notable differences between both genders, which we will look into in this video of Shih Tzu care.
Personality Differences
Male Shih Tzus are social butterflies, and while they'll pick a favorite person,
they tend to be more open about spending time with other people and even other animals in the house.
But remember that each dog is unique. We're only talking about inclinations here.
Females, by contrast, tend to bond early with one person, and rather than socializing all the time,
they often sneak around on their own when their favorite person is around. In a nutshell, they're a little more independent.
Behavior Problems
Funny enough, while we think of female dogs as being less dominant, with Shih Tzus,
this is definitely not the case. Males tend to be more easygoing,
but females can be a bit pushy. In fact, two female Shih Tzus are more likely to get in a fight than two males.
Beyond this, most problems stem from whether or not the dog is spayed or neutered.
Unneutered males sometimes get territorial and mark their area by peeing in different corners of the house.
Both genders may hump in their early adulthood as well, if they have not been spayed or neutered.
The Difference in Energy Levels
Generally, males are more outgoing and playful with families, although females are more energetic.
Both dogs do love to play, but with the females,
you may need to make the scenario a little more interesting to keep them from getting bored. Beyond those scenarios,
both genders actually sleep quite a lot, with 12 to 14 hours divided between bedtime and day naps.
Ease of Training
Female Shih Tzus love to learn new tricks, while males will be interested,
but may become easily distracted.
Your best bet with either gender is to simply make sure that lots of treats are involved, and that training sessions are no more
than 10 to 15 minutes each.
Major Gender Differences
If we had to boil down the biggest differences,
we would say that male Shih Tzus tend to be better family dogs, while females are usually better suited for individuals.
While both genders definitely have different inclinations,
the final verdict is really going to be up to you. One very important thing you must understand is
regardless of their gender, every Shih Tzu has a different personality, energy level, and intelligence.
A dog's personality is influenced by their environment, and how well they are trained, and not by their sex.
