The qipao, also known as the changsam, is more than just a traditional dress,
it's a living symbol of elegance, heritage, and Chinese identity.
It originated in the early 20th century in Shanghai,
where it evolved from the long robes worn by Manchu women during the Qing dynasty.
In the modern city streets of 1920s Shanghai, the qipao transformed into a fashionable garment
that beautifully blended Eastern tradition with Western tailoring.
The qipao features a high collar, fitted shape, and side slits that allow for both modesty and
grace. Made from silk and embroidered with detailed patterns, each dress reflects beauty,
status, and cultural pride. In the 1930s and 40s, it was beloved by actresses,
scholars, and socialites. The qipao became a symbol of modern Chinese womanhood, confident,
graceful, and proud of her roots. Though it faded from daily wear in later decades,
the qipao still plays an important role in modern Chinese life.
You'll often see women wearing qipao in cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Suzhou, and Chengdu,
especially during festivals, traditional weddings, graduation photos, and even formal events.
And if you're traveling in China, you don't need to buy one to try it on.
In many tourist cities, especially places like Shanghai's Yuwan Garden, Suzhou's Old Town,
or Beijing's Hetang's, you can rent a qipao for a photo shoot. Prices are very affordable,
typically about 30 to 100 RMB around 5 to 15 United States dollars for an hour,
and some places offer half-day or full-day rentals with matching accessories and hairstyling.
Films like In the Mood for Love helped reintroduce its poetic elegance to the world.
Today, the qipao continues to evolve, blending classic silhouettes with modern design,
and remains a timeless representation of Chinese femininity and cultural pride.
