At ICRA 2024, we talked to Victor Suen from Fourier Intelligence about their new humanoid robot. Fourier Intelligence was initially focused on rehabilitation and recovery for humans. Learn how they started to develop a humanoid robot and where they plan to use it.

My name is Victor Su and I'm with Fourier Intelligence and this is our human robot
product, first generation of it. We will call it GR1, General Robotics Dash 1.
So Fourier Intelligence was founded in 2015 and we started as a robotic company focusing on
rehabilitation. So we have built a whole line of products including different devices for limb
recovery and then later on we also developed exoskeleton products, a series of those.
Once we started the project it didn't take long for us to realize, you know, in the market there
weren't available parts necessary for building the robots so we had to build a lot of parts from
ground up. And fast forward five years, we're here, we have the first generation product
and it's available for sale. But we also realized there's a long journey ahead of us
so we'll keep working on this and improving it further. We're building a humanoid robot because
we think it's the future of humanity. It'll help with productivity, it'll do the work that
may be dangerous for a human worker to do. So we think there's a space for a humanoid robot to
carry out some activities or work for us. If we think about the robots down the road or in the
future, it's the hardware, it's the locomotion ability, and then on top of that it's the brain
which includes perception and decision making and how you interact with human beings.
At Fourier we're mostly focused on the hardware itself plus good locomotion ability.
And then our approach is also, since we're focusing on those two areas, our approach is
providing an open platform for the other experts to work together with us on building the applications.
We have many peers, companies, researchers, or institutions, they are taking on the similar
project as us. We're building our product, we release our first generation, we're heads down
working on the next generation, making it better, but we are also welcoming other peers and
competitors to come up with exciting products so that it's competition but also I think it's
a community that everybody is working together on the next level of humanoid robots.
