2:11 Let's Take A Trip Around The World And See How Different Countries Celebrate Valentine's Day Or Their Day Of Love.
This year we will visit Brazil, Chile, Slovenia, Germany, and Taiwan.
Brazilians celebrate Dia Dos Namorados or "Lovers' Day," on June 12. They exchange gifts and share dinners with friends and relatives. June 13 is St. Anthony's Day as he is the Saint for match-making. Single women perform rituals called simpatias in hopes St. Anthony will bring them a husband.
Chile is called the "country of poets." Nobel Prize winners in literature Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda are from Chile. They celebrate the February 14 Valentine's Day. They enjoy nice dinners and romantic music along with salsa contests. Gifts in Chile include flowers, chocolates, exquisite jewelry, and travel plans.
4:11 Let's Head For Europe Next And Visit Slovenia
On February 14 in Slovenia, they work in the fields as St. Valentine is one of the patron saints of spring, good health, and beekeepers. It is the first day that workers head back to the fields and many proposals occur in these fields. More couples recognize March 12, St. Gregory's Day, as a romantic holiday. It is the beginning of spring. Birds are joined in wedlock. Some believe that if a young woman looks up in the sky, the first bird she sees will be the type of husband she will marry. They float lights in tiny wooden boats and houses down the river as Saint Gregory tossed light into the after on that day.
It is an adult holiday in Germany. The American military personnel brought it to Germany in the 1950s. The pig is the symbol of luck and lust in Germany. Lovers exchange tiny pink rosebuds, forget-me-nots, and carnations. There are chocolates in the shape of pigs. They love Lebkuchen, heart shaped cakes with romantic sayings on them. They give exquisite jewelry, a box of chocolates, and nice cards. A romantic dinner at home or in a restaurant is great.
Twice a year in Taiwan they love to give flowers. First on February 14 and then on July 7. July 7 comes from a Chinese fairytale from a long time ago. A young man named Niulang was a cow-herder. He took his brother's nine cows to a meadow but could not come home until he had ten. He found an old sick buffalo, and he helped it recover. It took him to a river where they saw 7 beautiful fairies bathing there. They hid the clothes of the prettiest one. The other fairies left and Zhinu cried. Niulang gave her her clothes, they fell in love, married, and had two kids but her parents were mad that she married a mortal and took her back to heaven. He flew with his two kids to see Zhinu in Heaven but the Queen Mother made the Milky Way with her Hairpin to block them. Magpies formed a bridge so they could meet and she let them meet every year on July 7. The eve before July 7 is called Qixi Day. Also, July 7 has Qiaiao Jie day or Begging Skills Day where single young women send incense to Zhinu asking her for wisdom and talent.
8:41 On February 14 In Taiwan, the men give elaborate flowers to their friends. One red flower means "an only love." Eleven red flowers mean "favorite." 99 red flowers mean "forever." 108 red flowers mean "Will you marry me?"

The first Valentine's Day, also known in history as the Feast of Saint Valentine,
was in the year 496 A.D. Different countries like Czech Republic, Ireland, Scotland, England, and
France all claim to have some history attributed to a Saint Valentine. Valentine's Day first became
associated with romantic love in the 14th century. There was a Roman festival called
Ubiqualia in the middle of February. During this celebration, boys drew the names of girls from a
In the United States, Valentine's Day of February 14 is considered a romantic holiday that celebrates
love and relationships. It's not a government holiday, so people will be going to work and
school. They may go out to dinner in the evening, and they give gifts like flowers and candy. Even
in school they like to exchange cards and candy. You will see decorations like Cupid with his arrows,
doves, hearts, and roses. Cupid is a Valentine's Day symbol. His arrows cause his targets to fall
in love when they are pierced into their hearts. In the stores you will find candy hearts,
the romantic quotes written on them, red and pink teddy bears, roses, balloons,
and lots of heart-shaped items. So there's no one special in your life this year. That's okay,
you don't need to be alone. You can celebrate with friends even if you don't have a lover.
Enjoy dinner with them or exchange cards and gifts for fun. Some people call this Galatin's Day.
This is so anyone, whether with a lover or not, can celebrate and have a fun-filled day.
Tell your friends they are special to you, and you're glad to have them in your life.
Now let's take a trip around the world and see how a few different countries celebrate
Valentine's Day. We're going to stop in Brazil, Chile, Slovenia, Germany, and Taiwan.
So fasten your seat belts because here we go. First we'll head for South America and check
out Valentine's Day in Brazil. Carnival is held sometime in February or March every year,
so Brazilians skip the February 14th celebration and celebrate Dia dos Namorados or Lover's Day
on June 12th. They exchange chocolates, flowers, and cards, attend music festivals, and performances.
Brazilians celebrate this day of love by exchanging gifts and sharing a grand dinner
with friends and relatives. The next day, June 13th, is Saint Anthony's Day, as Saint Anthony
is considered a matchmaking saint. On this day, single women perform rituals called simpasa
and hopes that Saint Anthony will bring them a husband.
Next, since we're in South America, let's head for Chile. Chile is called the country of poets
since it produced Nobel Prize winners in literature, such as Gabriel and Mistral and
Pablo Neruda. Chileans celebrate February 14th with fierce joy and emotion. They decorate their shops,
malls, and streets with flowers, handmade crafts, dreamers, balloons, and lights. Chileans love to go
to restaurants with friends or family on Valentine's Day. The restaurants have mild romantic
music playing with instruments, such as guitars, harps, tambourines, and pianos. Flowers, decorations,
and Valentine themes on the walls set the romantic mood. You will find many musical contours
and salsa contests going on. Gifts in Chile include flowers, chocolates, cards, along with
exquisite jewelry and travel plans. Now let's hop on the plane and head for Europe and visit
Slovenia. In Slovenia, February 14th is a day for working in the fields, as Saint Valentine is one
of the patron saints of spring, good health, and beekeepers. Therefore, February 14th has something
to do with the connection between agriculture and love in the terms of fertility. It is often the
first day workers head back to the fields, and many proposals will occur in those fields.
Saint Gregory's Day in Slovenia is March 12th. Recently, more couples have begun to recognize
March 12th as a day of love. Saint Gregory was a 6th century monk who became Pope. March 12th was
considered the beginning of spring. It is said that on that day, birds are joined in wedlock,
having found their partner a month before on Saint Valentine's Day. On this day, people hang
baked goods in the trees and bushes. They are leftovers from the birds' weddings. In the past,
young women would look up at the sky, and the first bird they saw indicated the type of husband they
would marry. On March 12th, lights are floated down rivers and other bodies of water. It is the day
when Saint Gregory tossed light into the water. Children build miniature boats and houses,
and they put the lights inside of them and send them downstream.
Since we're in Europe, we're going to head for Germany. It's definitely an adult holiday in
Germany. It became popular in the 1950s when the American military personnel brought it to Germany.
Only half of the country celebrates it. In Germany, the symbol for luck, as well as lust,
is the pig. Lovers exchange flowers, like tiny pink rosebuds and forget-me-nots,
for the delicate or new love. But carnations say,
you are delightful. There are chocolates and other gifts in the shape of a pig.
Good luck, piggies. Those holding hearts or four-leaf clovers are extremely popular Valentine's
gifts. But don't forget Lebkuchen, heart-shaped spice cakes with romantic sayings, such as,
Ich liebe dich, I love you, or Mein Schatz, my treasure. Of course, giving a lady a piece of
exquisite jewelry, roses, a box of chocolates, and a nice card is perfect. Then, at the end of
the day, there is the romantic dinner, either at home or in a restaurant.
Now let's head for Asia and check out Valentine's Day in Taiwan. Twice a year in Taiwan, they love
to give flowers. On February 14 and again on July 7, a special Valentine's Day of the lunar calendar,
which comes from a Chinese fairy tale from a long time ago. Many years ago, a young man named
Niling was a cowherder. His brother's wife told him to take their nine buffaloes to pasture in a
meadow, but he had to bring ten wilder buffaloes back home, or he couldn't come back home.
He found an old and weak buffalo. He cared for it, and it recovered, and that buffalo could talk.
He followed the old buffalo to a river, where he saw seven beautiful young girls bathing in the
He and the buffalo hid the clothes of the prettiest girl. The fairies put on their
clothes after bathing and left, but Zinu could not find her clothes, and she stayed in the water
and cried. Niling introduced himself to her and brought her her clothes. They fell in love,
they got married, and they had two kids finally. But her parents were mad that she married a mortal,
and they came back and took her back to heaven. The buffalo told Niling that after he died he
could use his cowhide and make leather shoes to take her in heaven. He did that and flew to Zinu
with their two children, but the queen mother used her hairpin to draw a line
and make the Milky Way to separate the couple. The magpies formed a bridge over the galaxy,
allowing Niling and Zinu to reunite. The queen mother then let them meet once a year on July 7.
Because Zinu is believed to be beautiful, intelligent, and talented,
girls worship her on the evening of July 7 called Jishi Festival, and they ask for wisdom and talent.
Ji Chao means begging skills day, and unmarried girls gather in a front yard or at a front door
and set an altar with incense sticks to honor Zinu. July 7 is also her birthday. That's why
Valentine's Day, or Jishi Day, is a day of love in Taiwan. But on the real Valentine's Day,
February 14, men give elaborate bouquets to their loved ones. One red rose means an only love,
11 roses means a favorite, 99 roses means forever, the most important,
the bouquet of 108 roses, which means, will you marry me?
