DREAM TEAM | Men's VNL 2025. Standouts from four teams in VNL Dream Team. Three from Poland, two from Italy and one each from Brazil and Slovenia make up the ideal line-up!
The men’s Volleyball Nations League 2025 Dream Team was announced on Monday, the day after Poland, Italy and Brazil lined up on the podium in Ningbo, while Slovenia finished in fourth place. Members of all four of these teams made it among the ideal seven of the competition:
Setter: Simone Giannelli (Italy) Opposite: Kewin Sasak (Poland) Outside hitters: Alessandro Michieletto (Italy), Wilfredo Leon (Poland) Middle blockers: Jakub Kochanowski (Poland), Jan Kozamernik (Slovenia) Libero: Maique Reis Nascimento (Brazil) MPV: Jakub Kochanowski
Widely considered one of the best contemporary volleyballers in the world, 28-year-old Italian playmaker Simone Giannelli has collected numerous Most Valuable Player and Best Setter awards at various major international competitions, but now he made the VNL Dream Team for the first time in his career. He captained the Italian squad for the entire duration of VNL 2025 and produced 350 successful sets on the way to his team’s first ever medal in the competition.
At the age of 28, opposite Kewin Sasak made a fabulous debut for the Polish national team and spearheaded the squad on the way to the VNL 2025 gold. In 15 matches, he accumulated 172 points, including 15 serving aces and 16 kill blocks, emerging as the new champions’ most prolific player of the tournament.
Similar to his teammate Giannelli, 23-year-old Alessandro Michieletto has picked up a number of individual awards at big competitions in his career, but this outside hitter nomination for the Dream Team was his first VNL recognition. He was the best scorer in Italy’s campaign for their first VNL medal with a total of 167 points in 11 matches played, including 15 kill blocks. His 26 aces put him in second place in VNL’s best server ranking.
32-year-old Cuban-born star Wilfredo Leon joined the Polish team only for the last competition week of the Preliminary Phase and the Finals, but left his mark with a total of 87 points, including an impressive 12 serving aces, over just seven matches played. His tally included the 16 points that made him the best scorer of Sunday’s emphatic straight-set victory in the gold medal match and probably earned him his first VNL Dream Team nomination to add to a rich collection of individual awards.
Jakub Kochanowski, Poland’s 28-year-old middle blocker, captained his team to the title in VNL 2025 and earned himself a spot on the Dream Team, repeating his individual awards from VNL 2023 and VNL 2024. Like his teammate Leon, Kochanowski appeared only in the last seven games of the squad on the way to the crown and, in addition to his charisma, he chipped in with 55 points, including 14 kill blocks and 5 aces.
Slovenia are also represented on the Dream Team by their middle blocker and captain – 29-year-old Jan Kozamernik – for his first VNL individual award. He led and inspired his team throughout their campaign to reach the VNL semifinals for the third time in history and contributed a total of 103 points, including 8 aces. His 34 kill blocks put him in third place among the best blockers of the competition.
With 119 digs in Brazil’s 15 matches towards the VNL 2025 bronze to his name, 28-year-old libero Maique Reis Nascimento emerged 34 digs clear on top of the best diggers ranking. He also finished runner-up in the best receivers chart with 88 successful passes, and earned himself a spot on the Dream Team as the best libero of the tournament, his first individual award in the VNL.
He plays this ball with such control that even at his full, it's a very controlled approach step
and he has such a soft cut. He's almost top of the antenna touching that. You can't pass badly
can you in that sense?
Lavia puts it to recycle. It gets messy.
Sometimes it's great to have a two meter six setter. You can just throw the ball out
but the swing by Lavia to recycle was exceptional. He had a lot of work to do.
The ball's a little bit off the net. Nice little swat.
Botolo at the reception. Oh yes! Not much wrong with that left hand is there?
No, I think his hand feels just fine. We see him pull this out in those perfect moments. He just
seems to have such a good read of the game. It's such a missed opportunity if a setter does this.
Wonderful. Just on point. Okay, I'll mention the word again. Wonderful. Look at this.
Well, it's a nice wide set between Anzani.
Good take. Oh, Lewaty shut down by Sasic. What a move by Sasic. Closes off the angle.
It's a huge block point for his side.
Yes, it wasn't hit hard and it didn't back but it was just wonderful to watch the control.
Well, Sasic tries to speed up on this ball. It makes the window of contact to get
into the right space really, really small.
Take that fraction long to put his hand on the ball and guide it into the right area.
Sasic gets Dolan one-on-one. That's a huge block. That is massive for Poland.
Bringing to the edge of the 20s with a three-point lead will be timeout for Brazil.
Better but Sasic, he makes it look so effortless.
A really fluid mover.
Without any delay. Doesn't look like he has to really power up. He is pushing
but it's so smooth now he gets off the floor.
Pass is good. They move it around a little different zone for Michieletto.
Different width on the attack. So, the step forward from Gianelli is the overload in the
zone. Gajulo takes his guy. But Tondike, he's really focused on Lavia.
Big damage to Germany. Mikhail Vinyarsky, their coach. And here we are.
Are they going to go down against Ukraine? Big hit.
Michieletto and Lukaporo roaring away like they just won the match.
Well, it seems as though finally Italy have gotten a strong start.
Looking a lot more like Team Italy than we saw in set one and two.
The Ukraine feeling the pressure right from the start. They're going to Poland.
Botolo on that one has been doing so much heavy hitting and just a really nice redirect.
It was perfect timing. What a block. What a block.
Big smile on the face of Michieletto as he should. I think potentially coach maybe said
something to him about where to be because it's just this big. I believe it's his left
hand that just one-handed shuts down Nikolic. Wow.
I mean, I know we sing his praises all the time, but Gianelli is such a talented setter.
And if you watch this back, you're going to see that there's a block
jumping with him on the set. That takes at least one blocker out.
Good serve. Free ball over from Poland.
Four. Shot down. Solo block. Number nine, Wilfredo Leon.
What a block right here by Wilfredo Leon shutting it down. He was even impressed.
Leon is a combination of height, physicality and speed of his arms.
When you watch even in slow motion, how quickly middle blocker
Simoniuk is going to set it up for Sasuk. Block down on the triple block. Leon ripping and scoring.
Unbelievable swing right here by.
Everyone was expecting that to be hit. And that means we go from Ningbo to Brooklyn.
Nine-nine. No chance for Gianelli. There we have it. Nine-nine.
That also emphasizes the goal by sense. Tom Coates comes with the best intentions,
but Jan Kozmanek just waits and says, yeah. Well, they'll be interested to hear this time
out now what Joel Banks has to say. All is good. Good luck from them.
In the way. And it is Elgert serving for Canada in red on the right hand side to Slovenia, who's
served up the first point with a big swing from one of your players to watch. Jan Kozmanek.
I mean, he's one of the most incredible middle blockers that you'll see. But also take a look
at the reception. A big swing, two hands on him though. Good switch of play on the set.
Good defensive work for Slovenia. Ziga Stern. It's still up. Such a way now. No attack offered
this time for Canada. That might be costly for them, but it is. Not his biggest swing,
but the most important thing is the ball went. 27-year-old with the serve. Goes down the line
short to Kozmanek. Says welcome to the game, Kofi, but not in my house. I mean, we were talking
about him before this game as a player to watch. He already had 16 block points and he's showing
you exactly how he's moving to Allianz Milano. What a touch from Sanchez to keep the ball in
the air. For Brazil to return it. Oh, it's a monster block. Gladio's in the game. Oh,
good recycle though. That was a good choice. Well done, Mikey. Dalen comes good. Brazil will have
the point. You felt with that ball being so good on its way to the net, there was a swing coming
for Turquier, but the recycle was a good choice. He's dug it every time out of that. Mikey brings
it in. Alan, can you finish? Same shot. Same shot. You've got to cover that line now. It's his.
Kovacic is wanting to protect the angle inside the court. There's conceding that little space
on the sideline and in the corner. Not wanting to get beaten that extra meter inside the sideline.
Oh, that's a good serve as well. He's taken four now out of height. Doesn't matter though.
He is such a good technician. Block on attack. He's really cleaned his technique.
How about a one-armed block? Thank you very much. Oh, that was impressive.
Kochanowski goes up, sees the set, and then just reaches that much more over there with the right
hand. Shutting it down. Watch. Nice. Commander going straight back to Kochanowski.
Three aces in the game. And Koncepcion shut down by Kochanowski. Kochanowski's been waiting
all match long to finally get a chunk of this. And again, he's paying attention to the directions.
That one felt extra good.
