A tiny house on a big piece of land just sounds ideal to me.
California, we have the climate on our side so my space is actually expanded.
I'd love to have an outdoor bathtub and you know just take a bath under the stars.
You know you live in a little space but you don't have to have a little tiny sink.
That's where I feel like I'm living big.
One of the things that caught my eye about this tiny house was the unique feature.
Hi, I'm Violet and this is my tiny house Raven's Nest.
I lived in a high-rise in a studio so I was very used to living in a small space.
Being that I'm a landscape designer by profession, living downtown, I had a balcony.
No land to be creative and putter around in and make a garden so I let that go.
A tiny house on a big piece of land it just sounds ideal to me.
I love the idea of living debt-free, low overhead and I have more time to do more
the things I love doing.
This house popped up for sale. It was already in the spot.
When I saw it I was immediately inspired.
I just looked at it and thought I could really work with this space.
I ended up buying it for $87,000.
There's a space rent for the lot and that is $1,200 a month.
So I guess it works out to be around $1,400 a month with trash and electricity and water.
My dream came true with this tiny house.
It's perfect for me and my lifestyle and the things that that I like to do.
My son, my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter came down here recently
and I was so excited to show it to them.
And my son was like, this is you mom.
And I just love the thought of my granddaughter who's two and a half,
her thinking about her nana living in a little tiny house with her little cat Truffle
and she comes to visit me in the tiny house in the garden.
I just love that thought.
Here's my garden. Welcome.
When I first purchased the tiny home
I had a couple of things to consider in the very beginning.
The tiny home is really modern and I had to consider
do I want to have a modern sleek fence out here in the country?
Ultimately I came to the conclusion, charming.
That's what I'm looking for, charming.
I went with this fence, which is actually a French style Gothic fence.
I think it adds a charming country bohemian vibe to my garden.
And then the next thing that was very important was privacy and screening.
So we opted for green, evergreen plants,
just a lot of green to be the base foundation of the garden.
A meandering path that kind of leads you in the garden.
California, we have the climate on our side
so we can live inside, outside lifestyles.
You can have an outdoor room.
So my space is actually expanded.
This is my outdoor dining space.
Over here I opted to get a just a simple portable grill.
This is a simple propane.
I can just come out and start it up and put the vegetables on here.
So it's extending my kitchen outdoors.
I don't have to always be in the tiny house.
I can come out here, cook, sit down here and eat.
At the table I can light some candles at night and turn my market lights on.
Also, I've been into pizza.
This little oven, that's also propane.
So we opted to have concrete pavers put down.
You know, everything is movable, portable.
I can shift things around.
I can add to it.
This pergola was already here.
In the future we plan to make it solid because of the rain.
So next is my outdoor living room.
I wanted it to look very inviting and comfortable.
There's a few options I can create with this space.
Picture having some pizza, a nice glass of wine.
The fire's going here.
The stars are out and the moon's in the sky and it's relaxing.
One thing about this space is that at night there's a lot of bugs flying around.
I have a movie screen that's going to be my next phase I'm going to set up.
These curtains can be closed and I plan to put a mosquito netting on the sides
and then I can sit in here under the fire with the movie projector
and watch movies here at night without mosquitoes.
Make a very cozy, almost an indoor feeling space.
This is my outdoor bathroom.
One of the things that I was really disappointed about
when I started living in a tiny house is I've always loved baths.
I thought I'd love to have an outdoor bathtub and just take a bath under the stars.
I found this on Facebook Marketplace for $300.
It's a Victorian clawfoot tub.
I thought now how am I going to place it?
And I need a fence.
I need some privacy.
Well, I have a wonderful boyfriend who decided to build me a little bath house.
I wanted this space to be really feminine, beautiful and nurturing.
Epsom salt baths with rose petals and ferns and looking out under the moon
and the stars at night in a balmy summer evening.
It's just really relaxing and healing and unwinding space.
And this is my outdoor fire pit area.
It's kind of a work in progress.
The idea is that it's a getaway location in the space.
So it's out here in the kind of in the back garden area.
So I love the backdrop of the rocks in the background.
Another space to unwind and gather with friends.
This is the other side of the tiny house.
I installed a catio and inside there is a little trap door for pets.
Truffle.
He needs a little bit of space and I don't like him to run around in the wild here
because there's a lot of coyotes and things where he can get in trouble here.
So I'd like to keep him safe.
He can come out here at night and, you know,
when all the critters are making their noises and he can sit outside and he's safe.
In a tiny space, litter boxes are an issue.
So this kind of takes care of the litter box odor.
He comes out here when he has to do his business and I can come in this door right here
and take care of all the cleaning and everything.
So this is the porch upon entry to the front door of the tiny house.
The previous owner, I thought it was pretty ingenious that they put this pallet.
These are pallet racks.
Originally it was just painted white and orange.
So the first thing I did when I arrived here is I painted this all black.
I love the portable theme pallets.
They can be moved.
My house is eight and a half feet wide by 32 feet long and approximately 300 square feet.
And so this is my indoor living room space.
The small as it might be, it's everything I need.
I can relax on a nice wide sitting area.
Originally I had a sofa in here, but it wasn't comfortable.
I ended up buying a cot because I can fold it up, put it away.
I can change the interior how I want.
I could put a chair here if I want.
But I lined it with cushions and some blankets.
It works.
It's pretty cozy.
The one thing that I just loved immediately was it had a stove because I love fire.
So in the wintertime, it's pretty easy to start.
It's wood burning and it just warms up the whole space.
And when it's wet outside, I think that the heat from the
stove actually dries out and helps keep any moisture down inside the tiny home.
So the home came with a mini split and it cools a place absolutely perfect.
This here is my wardrobe closet.
And one of the things I love about it so much is I can just pack a lot of clothes in here.
Speaking of clothes, I did downsize probably more than half of my wardrobe.
But still, there's a lot of space in there.
And I utilize these covers too for clothing.
Being that I have a lot of shoes like most women, where do you put them in a tiny house?
It's a huge, huge dilemma.
So inside here, I put all my shoes in here.
Plenty of room.
Again, I had to downsize those by probably half also.
But it's okay.
Half the stuff I have, I never used.
So this is the second half of my space.
When I do want to just sit at a desk and have my laptop,
this is a good little space to get some work done.
One of the things that caught my eye about this tiny house was the unique
feature of the skylights up above.
I think there's like six skylights and the one in the loft actually opens.
And when you're sleeping in there,
you can have the fresh breeze on you while you're sleeping at night.
And then you can see the stars in the sky and the moon if it's out.
This is something I had to have and it's an alkaline water dispenser.
Alkalizing your body is important for health.
It also has an acid dispenser where you can water your plants.
And also you wash your vegetables off here.
And it helps get rid of microbes and things.
You know, you live in a little space, but you don't have to have a little tiny sink.
That's where I feel like I'm living big when I have a nice big sink.
I have a few things that save space in the kitchen.
I love the idea that I could hang these mason jars up and I could put spirulina,
oatmeal, chamomile tea, anything that goes in a jar here.
So I don't have to keep the little bags of things.
Each one of these has three screws.
And so leaning over here with my screw gun,
it was kind of a pain to put these up, but I was persistent and I kept going.
And this probably took me probably three different segments to accomplish this.
And then it just screws in and it doesn't fall.
I feel quite happy with that.
So this is not an induction.
It's a ceramic, which I like because it doesn't off-put radiation.
It's a perfect size.
And I make a lot of tea.
I'm Canadian.
I drink a lot of tea.
I've got the big teapot and the teacups I've had for over 20 years that I brought down from Canada.
I guess that's the Canadian in me.
Originally, there was an oven and a dishwasher here and it took up a lot of space.
So I had that pulled out and I just bought these IKEA carts.
This is all spices and vitamins or anything miscellaneous I just put here.
It's not lost deep in a basket, in a cupboard or anything.
So then this space over here, I call this an appliance garage.
Just easy to access here.
I can just pull it off and it's ready to go.
Building the stairs on this storage is a good use of space.
It's just really smart.
And then having things easily accessible.
This is the washing machine.
It's an all-in-one.
So it's the dryer and the washing machine all together.
You don't even have to switch from one unit to another.
So it's very convenient.
Refrigerator.
It's pretty big.
I think it's just perfect.
There's a lot of space in here.
And so this is my bathroom.
It's a regular toilet, not a compost because we're hooked up on a main line here.
This is the sink.
It's perfect for the space.
I added these little shelves and I added even more space.
So this is a little cabinet to keep jewelry and everything that I use every day.
The shelf kind of tips down with a makeup light.
Behind this thing is a storage closet where I can put, you know,
pillows, linens, you know, any extra household type of items.
The shower is a really big shower.
You can shower two people in here.
It has a waterfall shower and it's all tiled and plenty of space.
So this is my little cozy little loft sleeping space.
And what I like most about it is at nighttime when I come up here to go to sleep,
I have the window open and I can just sleep under the stars.
The bookshelf serves as a bookshelf.
Plus I feel secure having it there that maybe I won't fall.
So I feel added security with having this structure here.
And then this is Truffle's bed.
