The Traveling Van Life in Mexico; hot, sticky, but oh so much fun! Our Hasta Alaska journey continues north through Mexico over some pretty interesting terrain. In this episode you'll see the road serve up more typically (non-typical) travel surprises, like sleeping on a luxury yacht in Acapulco's fancy marina, waking up to crocodiles at camp and perfect surf community that makes us want to change the name of this trip to Hasta Mexico!
I've noticed something very very similar here. I'm traveling with Thor.
Last time on Astro Alaska we built a new shower for the Kombi, picked up a fun new crew,
dealt with brake failure, saw some seriously huge waves and spent another night living the dream.
This time we're taking you to Acapulco where we'll be waking up on a super yacht
and showing you why we prefer the beach to the city.
Waking up at our beachside camp the Kombi crew was down to just four members.
Elona from Israel, myself, Flo from Germany and of course Alaska.
We had some serious miles to put behind us as we were shooting for Acapulco.
Our progress was frustratingly slow.
We've never been in a situation where they're actually making the road in front of us.
They've just poured a bunch of rocks down and they're flattening it all out
making it little by little as we go along. God knows how long we're going to be here.
That's crazy that they're actually building the road.
Gracias.
By the time we were approaching Acapulco it was getting dark.
We need to get off the road fairly soon. We can't be driving in this state.
In the dark. Not in this car.
With a reputation for being Mexico's nicest and most violent city
we decided not to head in at night but find a free place to camp nearby.
I was dreaming that I was going to wake up to this beautiful blonde long blonde hair.
The dream come true. Look at these beautiful locks.
I think I slept one hour.
I know many of you will think it's cruel to let Alaska sleep outside but we do so for two reasons.
First because it's actually much cooler and more comfortable outside the Kombi in this climate
and two she only warns us of people approaching the Kombi if she's outside
and in these parts we need all the warning we can get.
We spent a little time looking around the stiflingly hot Acapulco.
It certainly has an impressive cityscape and it was the first town in Mexico that we visited
that still uses Volkswagen Beetles as the taxis which we thought was pretty cool.
And this is the first time I've seen traffic in a long time.
Try to avoid cities and the good reason it's so hot.
Sweat is pouring off us. The air's not coming in. The engine's getting hot.
We're getting hot. Alaska's getting hot.
Because of Acapulco's reputation we didn't really want to sleep on the streets of the city.
Fortunately we were traveling and traveling always presents unexpected opportunities.
So we suddenly found ourselves waking up in Acapulco's luxury marina
on a multi-million dollar super yacht.
Cooking, sleeping and living out of a vehicle is sometimes tiring
so after years of Kombi life I can't begin to tell you how much we are appreciating this stroke of luck.
We are cooking ourselves some dinner at this amazing kitchen in this amazing boat.
Air conditioning whilst we're cooking. Air conditioning.
And a fan that takes out the smoke.
Air literally blowing in my face right now as I'm chopping these carrots.
I can't even achieve that with a fan in the car.
And here's the captain, Ben.
He's cooking in the kitchen.
Thank you Ben for all of this. Thank you so much.
Flo had traveled previously in Central America with Ben from Israel
who just so happened to be looking after this yacht
whilst the owner was away and he invited us around.
Talk about landing on your feet man.
We could have stayed forever on this dream boat
but our home was on the road so we pushed north in search of surf.
What is the secret of your power?
The airport!
What's up you tinder boy?
How do you feel about your first time behind the Kombi wheel?
Oh really good, really good. It's a really nice adventure.
Flo's getting a little bit tough around here. He's been quick to get through.
What's up?
You think it's good?
I hope it's a bloody wave at the end of this.
Amigo, donde esta Alaska?
It's a lot of fun exploring for waves, heading down roads that are actually roads,
not knowing what you might find at the end of them.
Maybe you'll get stuck, maybe you'll stay a week,
maybe it's a dead end but that's the adventure.
We never know what we'll find when we wake up.
This morning Alaska alerted us to a danger alongside camp
that we hadn't previously seen.
Alaska, as brave and courageous as she is, didn't know what a crocodile was
or that they like hot dogs too.
Hello Donna, what are you doing here?
Hey, so we just had a dip in the ocean, a nice beach and we just made some breakfast.
French toast with bananas and mango and honey.
Pretty good.
And it looks really good.
Is it good?
There you go.
Free mangoes, free mangoes from the lady at the shop.
She was at the restaurant.
With the cinnamon it's really nice.
Happy camping.
It's pretty good.
Sugar.
So I've been on the combi now for six nights I think.
Leaving today because there is no swell expected to come in the next five days or so
and I have only two weeks left in Mexico so I'm leaving for other adventures.
That was a great great experience but overall never mind there was no surf
and that's what we were all super keen about.
It was just great times being in nature or being in the boat.
We were lucky to be on a boat but it's really nice.
It's really nice to be there to drive.
I like driving.
I like seeing how local people live, to see remote places
and that's really really great.
Something that not many people have the courage to do I think.
Or I don't know I think maybe a lot of not many girls would go with two guys
they don't really know on a combi to travel along the coast of Mexico,
the Pacific side of Mexico, surfing looking for surf spots.
I don't really see a reason for that to happen.
I don't know why so many girls don't do that
and I'm really glad I've decided to continue after Shai,
another girl that was traveling with us after she left.
It's tough but it pays off.
You don't remember the heat and you don't remember the mosquitoes
and you don't remember the bed sleeping conditions and the ants biting your feet.
You just remember the good times and the beautiful places you've been
and the people you met and the beautiful sunsets and sunrises that you've seen
and the good times basically, the gems, the smiles.
So it was up to Flo and I to find a new combi crew.
Look what just happened!
Somehow a bird managed to ship into the van.
Look from up there!
Well where I come from that means good luck at least.
Let's see if it's true.
I'll never forget this little river mouth shanty community of half-naked surfing hippies.
At this exact moment it is my version of heaven.
The people, the place, the time is now firmly lodged in my memory.
This surf camp is my happy place and I'm stoked that I got to share it with you.
We'll be leaving here soon and leaving with a full combi
but to meet our new combi crew you'll have to join us next time.
Until then, happy travels.
Next time on Astra Alaska we have one of the craziest nights in the combi ever
and I mean ever.
We deal with a seriously frustrating breakdown and play our part in saving a life.
Stay tuned.
