Arsenal are back in action with another pre-season test, this time against La Liga side Villarreal.
With the Premier League opener fast approaching, this is a chance for Mikel Arteta to fine-tune
his squad and sharpen up match fitness. Here's your full match preview, including predicted
line-ups, tactical expectations and key players to watch. After a mixed pre-season so far,
Arsenal will be aiming to build rhythm and cohesion. Their tour of Asia featured both
promise and rust, with standout moments from the likes of Dowman and Zubimendi,
Now, they face Villarreal, a team with technical ability, defensive discipline and history with
Arsenal, having knocked the Gunners out of the Europa League back in 2021 under former manager
Unai Emery. This fixture is less about revenge and more about readiness. Can Arteta's men control
proceedings, impose their attacking style and look more like the side that smash every team?
Here's our predicted starting XI for Arsenal, in goal.
Of course, this remains speculative, but this XI would offer balance, control and attacking
threat. Zubimendi, if he starts, could provide calm distribution from deep,
freeing up Rice to Rome and Oudegaard to dictate play further forward.
One player who needs a strong showing is Gabriel Martinelli.
The Brazilian hasn't quite found his rhythm this pre-season and will be looking to build
confidence ahead of the new campaign. We know what he's capable of, explosive dribbling,
direct runs and goal-scoring instincts, but he needs minutes to sharpen up.
Villarreal shouldn't be underestimated. They finished mid-table in La Liga last season but
remain a well-drilled technical side. Manager Marcelino has them playing fluid football,
with strong control in midfield and a compact defensive unit. Key players to watch include
striker Alexander Serloff, who brings height and presence up top, and veteran midfielder
Dani Perejo, who still pulls the strings with vision and passing. Former gunner Francis
Coquelin could also feature, bringing some edge to midfield battles. They may not be at full
strength, but they'll be well-organised and eager to test Arsenal's structure.
One thing that could shape this game is the substitutions.
And there are three names we're hoping to see.
Without question, one of the biggest positives from Arsenal's Asia tour.
The 15-year-old midfielder showed maturity beyond his years, press resistance and the ability to
dictate tempo. He was arguably the highlight of pre-season so far and deserves more minutes in
front of home fans. After completing his move and having his first training session with Arsenal
today, Maduweki is in line to make his unofficial debut. He's explosive, direct and adds flair
out wide. Even 20-30 minutes would be crucial in helping him get sharp before the Premier League
kicks off. Ethan Nwanneri, another standout from the Asia tour. Nwanneri impressed with his
intelligence, close control and confidence in tight spaces. At just 18, he's shown he's serious
and talented enough to play in the first team, having covered for Sarko on the right whilst he
was injured. So what are we looking for in this match? Will Victor Diukaris start over Kai Havertz?
Will Max Dalman make his debut at the Emirates? Will Ethan get the minutes he deserves?
It's also worth watching how sharp the transitions are, especially when Villarreal press high.
With just 12 days left before the season begins, every minute counts.
Arsenal vs Villarreal will be a good test of sharpness, squad depth and chemistry.
Score prediction? Arsenal 2-0 Villarreal.
